No full textRückläufige Ausleihen, steigende Besucherzahlen, sinkende Anfragen nach bibliothekarischen Auskünften stehen einer steigenden Zahl an Beratungen in der Literaturrecherche und -verwaltung und neuerdings auch zu Statistikprogrammen, Programmiersprachen und einem größeren Bedarf an Förderung digitaler Kompetenzen von universitärer Seite gegenüber – alle diese Faktoren bedingen eine Neuausrichtung der klassischen Benutzung in Bibliotheken. Die Benutzungsabteilung der SUB wurde in den letzten Jahren personell gestrafft und das Profil stärker auf Basisdienstleistungen konzentriert, um neue Themenfelder in anderen Bereichen der SUB erschließen zu können. Dies führte zu einer Prioritätenverschiebung und einem Bedeutungsverlust einiger Servicebereiche, so dass Mitte 2018 die Benutzungsabteilung einen Strategieprozess startete, um mit Hilfe verschiedener Methoden und Fragestellungen die Handlungsfelder der Abteilung zu analysieren, Zukunftsperspektiven zu erarbeiten, sowohl Potentiale, als auch Herausforderungen zu ermitteln und schließlich daraus resultierende Maßnahmen zu planen und umzusetzen. Der Artikel beschreibt den Weg zu einer Strategie der Benutzungsabteilung und deren Umsetzungsperspektive im Rahmen der Strategie der SUB Göttingen 2018-2021 unter Beteiligung der gesamten Abteilung.A decline in lending, an increasing number of visitors and decreasing inquiries at the reference desk stand in contrast to an increasing number of consultations about literature search and reference management, and, more recently, about statistics, programming and, on an university-wide level, digital skills in general. All of these factors require a reorientation of traditional library user services. In recent years, the Göttingen State and University Library\u27s user services department was streamlined in terms of staff and its profile concentrated more strongly on basic services to allow opening up new fields of action in other areas of the Göttingen State and University Library. This led to a shift in priorities and a loss of significance for some service areas, so that in mid-2018 the user services department started a strategic process. The aim was to analyse the fields of action of the department with various methods and questions in order to work out future perspectives, identify both potentials and challenges and finally plan and implement the resulting measures and projects. This article describes the strategy process of the user services department within the overall strategy of the Göttingen State and University Library 2018–2021, which involved the entire department in this participatory process
Non-Latin Scripts in Multilingual Environments: Possible Courses of Action for Libraries Based on the Example of the Campusbibliothek of Freien Universität Berlin
No full textIm Einklang mit dem Diskurs über die digitale Transformation der akademischen Forschung und Lehre steigt der Bedarf an stärkerer Zusammenarbeit. Insbesondere bei drittmittelfinanzierten Forschungsprojekten können spezifische Kenntnisse über Digital Humanities und nicht-lateinische Schriften selten innerhalb der Organisation vermittelt werden und Projektwerkzeuge und -plattformen können oft nicht länger als die Dauer des Projekts gepflegt werden. Eine Lösung könnte in der Einbeziehung von Informationsinfrastruktureinrichtungen wie Bibliotheken oder Rechenzentren sein. Diese Institutionen sind jedoch in der Regel nicht in der Lage, alle Sprachen und Disziplinen zu unterstützen. Der Artikel zeigt praxisbezogene Beispiele für institutionsübergreifende Kollaboration und die Ansätze eines Expertennetzwerkes zu nicht-lateinischen Schriften in multilingualen Umgebungen auf.In line with the discourse on the digital transformation of academic research and teaching, the need for stronger cooperation is increasing. Especially in third-party funded research projects, specific knowledge of digital humanities and non-Latin scripts can rarely be shared within the organisation and project tools and platforms can often not be maintained longer than for the duration of the project. One solution could be to include information infrastructure facilities such as libraries or data centres. However, these institutions are usually not able to support all languages and disciplines. The article shows practical examples of cross-institutional collaboration and the approach of an expert network on non-Latin scripts in multilingual environments
Libaries and Democracy in Germany: Results of a European Project on the role of public libraries for democracy and public welfare
No full textBibliotheken, Archive und Museen in und für die Öffentlichkeit im Digitalen Zeitalter ist das Projektthema eines vergleichenden Forschungsprojektes „ALMPUB“ gefördert vom Norwegischen Forschungsrat in den letzten drei Jahren. In zwei großen, vergleichenden Umfragen wurde zum einen die Bevölkerung von sechs europäischen Ländern (Norwegen, Dänemark, Schweden, Ungarn, Deutschland und die Schweiz) repräsentativ befragt sowie eine analoge Erhebung in der Berufswelt durchgeführt. Ziel war es, im Vergleich herauszufinden, welchen Stellenwert für die demokratische und die digitale Gesellschaft die Bibliotheken jeweils einnehmen und ob sie die neue(n) Rolle(n) in ihrem Selbstverständnis und ihrem aktuellen Angebot tatsächlich erfüllen.
Nicht überraschend ergibt sich ein deutlicher Unterschied zwischen den eher südlichen und den nordischen Ländern, die teilweise sogar in ihren Bibliotheksgesetzen seit einiger Zeit Bibliotheken dazu verpflichten, zur Entwicklung der Demokratie des Landes beizutragen. Ein Verständnis dafür ist in der Bevölkerung und in der Berufspraxis in Deutschland vergleichsweise wenig verbreitet. Zwar sehen die Mehrheit der befragten Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare in Deutschland eine wichtige Rolle für Bibliotheken darin, Demokratie zu fördern durch Bereitstellung von Information und Wissen, aber wenn es um konkrete Angebote zur Meinungsbildung z.B. durch aktivierende oder dialogorientierte Veranstaltungsformen geht, nimmt die Zustimmung anders als z.B. in Norwegen ab.
Dennoch ist eine Tendenz zu erkennen, dass die neue politische Rolle von Bibliotheken von der Bevölkerung angenommen und gefordert wird, und dass Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare sich auch in dieser Rolle sehen. Deutschland weicht von diesem Gesamtbild nur graduell ab.Libraries, archives and museums and the public sphere in the digital age is the project theme of a comparative research project "ALMPUB" funded by the Norwegian Research Council over the last three years. In large surveys based on probability samples, the population of six European countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, Germany and Switzerland) was surveyed on their view and acceptance of new and traditional roles and services of archives, libraries and museums. An analogous survey of the three professional fields gave further comparative insights. The aim was to find out what significance libraries have for the democratic and digital society and whether they actually fulfil the new roles in their self-image and their current offerings.
Not surprisingly, there is a clear difference between the Nordic countries and the South of Europe. Some of the Nordic countries have even codified the obligation of contributing to the development of the country\u27s democracy in their library laws. However, this meets with comparatively little understanding among the population as well as in professional practice in Germany. Although the majority of librarians surveyed in Germany see an important role for libraries in promoting democracy through the provision of information and knowledge, the approval decreases when it comes to concrete offers to form opinions, e.g. through activating or dialogue-oriented forms of events.
Nevertheless, there is a tendency to recognise that the new political role of libraries is accepted and demanded by the population, and that librarians also see themselves in this role. Germany deviates from this overall picture only gradually
