Measuring Local Dewatering Of Freshwater Mussels In the Yamhill Watershed

My research focused on freshwater mussels in the Yamhill Watershed. The research team I was a part of was focused on determining how extreme the changes in water depth and velocity experienced by mussels are, specifically under increasingly prevalent low-discharge conditions. We censused mussels and measured environmental variables including depth and velocity. We then compared those variables from the beginning to end of summer to see how dramatically they had changed. One of the most striking differences here is the increase in mussels at the surface level in July versus August. Surface was defined as 5cm or less. The bottom graph shows the overall change in mussel depth beween the two months, which came out to be a decrease from 25.5cm to 17.8cm. The graphs on the right depict the changes in water velocity experienced by mussels between July and August. The number of mussels in stagnant water increased greatly, and the number of mussels in flowing water dropped to almost zero. The bottom graph then shows the average water velocity experienced each month, highlighting the decrease from 7.6m/s to 0.8m/s. Both of these results ended up baring significance as proved by the Wilcoxon Rank Sum tests ran. This test is for comparing the mean of two groups, hence why it was suitable for this research

Beauty Industry Revenue and the Impact a Celebrity Name Has

    No full text
How do traditional brands such as L’Oréal, Unilever, and Estée Lauder differ from celebrity-founded brands like Kylie Cosmetics in their ability to generate and maintain revenue, especially in light of a celebrity’s influence and their social media marketing strategies? This paper looks at the revenue determinants of the top four firms within the beauty industry: L’Oréal, Unilever, Estée Lauder, and Kylie Cosmetics. The analysis shows how these firms navigate the oligopolistic cosmetics market where there are a couple dominant brands and a few emerging celebrity brands competing for revenue and market share. By using a revenue-based model approach, empirical results show how the role of variables such as income, female population, Consumer Price Index shape revenue outcomes. The findings suggest that while big firms benefit from global operations, celebrity founded brands like Kylie Cosmetics can effectively capture the attention and have short term consumer loyalty because of the brand and social media. The results from a fixed effects model showed that they do not significantly influence long term industry revenue when compared to structure factors such as market share and demographic trends. This study finds that long term factors such as female population growth and a firm’s market share are the primary drivers of revenue in the beauty industry, while short term brands such as Kylie Cosmetics launch has no statistically significant impact which highlights the importance of competitive position over promotional “hype”, yeah, the brand matters, but it is not everything

Overcoming Language Barriers: Improving Healthcare Equity for Limited English Proficiency Patients

The effective delivery of patient care depends on two main factors: improved cultural competency training and an understanding of language barriers as vital health components. The requirement for language service at hospitals exists by federal law but numerous healthcare facilities are lacking in support, due to hiring unqualified interpreters and missing vital documents in multiple languages, leading to growing disparities in patient care (Diamond et al., 2010). Global trends, combined with growing population migrations have increased the probability for nurses and patients to face dilemmas from language barriers. Nurses shouldn’t have to master every language, but a comprehensive understanding of language barriers promotes specific strategies that facilitate communication delivery for patient care. Nurses seek to unravel current cultural competency training models and language accessibility systems to improve LEP patient healthcare equity access. This paper aims to explore strategies to enhance current approaches to 3 cultural competency training and language accessibility to improve healthcare equity for LEP patients

A Dark Light: Leni Riefenstahl as a Case Study in Historical Memory

Leni Riefenstahl, an acclaimed female director during Nazi-era Germany, remains one of the most polarizing figures in film history, simultaneously celebrated for her technical innovations and condemned for her complicity in Nazi propaganda. While historians have typically examined Riefenstahl in regard to either her gender or her work for the Nazi regime, this study offers a more holistic approach to her. This paper examines how American audiences perceived Riefenstahl and her work from 1933 to 1945, analyzing the ways in which gender and power shape evaluations of one’s life and career. Drawing on primary sources such as Library of Congress archived newspaper articles, New York Times articles, documentaries, and Riefenstahl’s own memoir, this study argues that her reception is shaped by the tension between her technical innovations, her association with Nazi propaganda, and her gender, reflecting broader cultural and historical debates from that time about complicity, memory, and the relationship between art and politics. Drawing on Joan Scott’s framework, this research highlights how Riefenstahl’s position as a woman in a traditional, patriarchal society both informed and complicated polarized reactions in the American press—reactions shaped by anti-fascist sentiment, art and politics relationship, and Hollywood’s influence on public memory

Friend or Foe?: Navigating Body Image and Social Media Influence

    No full text
Social media use is pervasive and represents a double-edged sword, offering potentially destructive and constructive experiences for its users. As part of a larger mixed-method study focused on individuals impacted by feminine appearance standards, this qualitative descriptive study investigates the impact of social media and body image among eight participants (ages 19-30, gender and ethnically diverse). Each participant responded to questions about the evolution of positive and negative body image and the impact of social media content, including body positivity, throughout their lives. Participants were also asked to view and respond to four ideal or non-ideal Instagram images with reinforcing and challenging comments. Thematic analysis of interviews revealed key themes including: 1) strong influence of social media on appearance, fashion, consumerism and productivity; 2) cognitive dissonance in negotiating body positivity, acceptance and neutrality; 3) body image disturbance, objectification and internalized appearance norms; 4) negative impact of body commentary, both in-person and online; 5) push/pull relationship with social media engagement. Participants’ perspectives highlight the need for change in online spaces by fostering authenticity and empowering users to assert agency over their digital experiences. Key areas for improvement include comment moderation, social media literacy, and the promotion of diverse and inclusive content

Evaluating Plasma Etching for Graphene Fabrication: Etch Rate Control and Flake Characterization

Graphene, a two-dimensional material composed of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, has attracted significant attention due to its exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. Mechanical exfoliation is one of the most reliable methods for producing high-quality graphene flakes. However, its lack of scalability limits its application in industrial contexts. This thesis explores plasma etching as an alternative approach for controllable and scalable graphene production, by etching thicker graphite flakes into single-layer graphene

Mathematical Modeling Contest: Predicting Olympic Game Medals

The Olympic Games constitute an international remembrance of sports excellence and peace in which winning medals constitutes a matter of great personal and national significance to athletes and nations. A forecasting of future medal outcomes has developed into a large application of sports analytics, but one with an elusive challenge inherent in varying performer performance, variable event rosters, and external factors like coach and home-based support. We were tasked with developing a model that could predict the top seven countries medal totals for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. While there are limitations to each model, collectively they represent a strong foundation for improving predictive accuracy for future Olympic analysis
