Arranging for the Instrumental Performance Ensemble

    No full text
We will demonstrate how we collaborate to arrange music for our fifteen-member mixed instrumental music ensemble and aim to show a path that allows music programs at small liberal arts colleges to be globally inclusive, student-centered, and professionally relevant. Rather than trying to find repertoire for our ensemble’s chance collection of instrumentalists, it is more practical and rewarding to select and arrange music for our specific needs, considering the following issues: 1) suitability for the technical skill level of our musicians (mostly non-majors), 2) length, style, and complexity of the works, 3) can the arrangement sound good on its own terms, not just like a lesser version of the original? 4) music covered in academic courses, 5) student interests. We focused on two types of sources: 1) Piano music, including sets of Beethoven Ecossaisen, Schubert Ländler, and short works by Debussy and Bartók–composers also discussed in required core courses. 2) Songs from the institution’s own song book, which is a collection of music written in the 1930s by students for glee club competitions. It includes more-or-less serious songs cheering and praising the institution, which we arranged as danzóns, son-montunos, and sambas–genres also covered in a global music course. This creative work was supported by a Student-Faculty Collaborative Research Grant

Assessing Various Methods of Social Media Use to Combat Vaccine Hesitancy

Science is no stranger to skeptics, and vaccine technology has proven no exception to being immune from detractors since the inception of inoculation (Lanzarotta, 2024). At first, people questioned vaccine safety and efficacy, fearing contraction of disease. Public trust in vaccination gained traction with such successes as the polio vaccine, but the Wakefield article published in 1998 falsely linked the MMR vaccine to autism, arguably launching modern vaccine skepticism (Motta & Stecula, 2021). It was retracted twelve years after publication following refutation by evidence-based research, but not before increasing internet speeds allowed for the dissemination and proliferation of vaccine misinformation. The World Health Organization now considers vaccine skepticism a top ten threat to public health (LaCour & Davis, 2020). As such, combatting misinformation should be considered a public health priority. This study aims to compare different approaches to combatting vaccine hesitancy and identify the most effective methods to reduce vaccine skepticism and increase herd immunity

The Effectiveness of Using Art Therapy in the Treatment of Individuals with PTSD

Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses a creative process to explore emotions. It has gained recognition as a potential treatment for PTSD. Studies suggest that art therapy can help adults process traumatic experiences by expressing their feelings and reducing symptoms of distress and anxiety (Haeyen & Wanten, 2024). Working in a trauma-informed care environment, one must understand the role of art therapy, as it can be essential in offering holistic, patient-centered care. Investigation of the effectiveness of art therapy could lead to a more inclusive and diverse treatment option for adults with PTSD. In this paper, we will examine the effectiveness of art therapy in reducing PTSD symptoms in adults

Music Therapy: To Decrease Pain and Anxiety in Active Labor Compared to Pharmacological Interventions

Pain management during active labor is crucial for a safe and positive outcome, when delivering a baby and stabilizing the mother during postpartum care. A study in Italy of 30 random women who were pregnant and labored between 37 weeks and 42 weeks gestation participated in a control group and intervention group while in active labor, found out that music plays a big part in lowering a women’s labor pain during labor and postpartum (Buglione et al., 2020, p. 694). Music can shift a person’s perception of pain and distract them from the current physical pain (Levy, 2017, p. 23). This research will explore the effectiveness of music therapy to decrease pain and anxiety during active labor compared to pharmacological interventions

Influence of Water Depth on Surface Waves Generated by a Swimmer

    No full text
This project models the motion of water waves created by a swimmer in a pool. Wave speeds are influenced by water depth, which in turn may influence swimmers’ speeds. Using a linear oscillator, the swimmer is treated as a periodic driving force that creates surface waves. The natural frequency derived from wave depth and wavelength along with the swimmer\u27s stroke frequency are compared to show these effects

    McMinnville Fire Internship

    No full text
In this presentation, I will talk about my experience during my internship with the McMinnville Fire Department. I will share the different types of emergency calls I went on, such as medical calls, fire alarms, and rescues. I will explain what I learned from these calls and how they helped me understand the fire service better. I will also talk about the values I saw in the firefighters, like teamwork, communication, and staying calm under pressure. As part of my internship, I worked on a project to create a mobility program to help firefighters stay strong and prevent injuries. I came up with this idea by watching how firefighters move during their shifts and doing research to learn more. This experience helped me grow both personally and professionally. It also showed me that I want to keep working in the fire and emergency services in the future

    Linfield Tackles Food Insecurity

This project looks at food insecurity—when people don’t have enough reliable access to food and how it affects college students. Many students struggle to afford enough to eat while also paying for school and living costs. By with the Linfield Food Pantry, I saw how important these services are in helping students meet their basic needs. This presentation shares what I learned from working at the pantry, talks about why food insecurity is a growing issue on college campuses, and shows how student run programs can make a real difference. My goal is to raise awareness and encourage more support for students who are facing hunger
