The YMCA and the Origins of Freshman Orientation Programs
No full textMost insightful historical work pinpoints the rise of freshman orientation programs in the mid 1920s as one instance of administrative specialization emerging to fill the advising and socialization void left by faculty taken with academic particularization. Although the press of the historical moment is indeed relevant, institutionalized freshman orientation did not emerge in the historical moment of the 1920s sans progenitor. Rather, specific students sensed the needs of their peers and acted upon their intuition much earlier as a latent orientation function of their manifest religious intent. This research illustrates the lineage of freshman events and college socialization interventions that accumulated over several decades and demonstrates that they were initiated originally by students themselves, specifically through the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Student Associations found across the United States and many parts of Canada

Get PDFAbstract:The British Columbia College of Teachers operated from 1987 to 2011, a period extraordinary for the amount of conflict generated. The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation appeared to view the College not as a professional association, but as an extension of the union. It came into conflict with the universities over teacher training, and appeared reluctant to discipline members, or to listen to complaints against teachers. Following a highly critical report the College was replaced by the B.C. Teachers’ Council, a body much more tightly controlled by the Ministry of EducationRésumé:Le British Columbia College of Teachers (l’association professionnelle des enseignants de la Colombie Britannique) a existé de 1987 à 2011. Cependant, la Fédération des professeurs de cette province percevait ce regroupement non pas comme une association professionnelle mais plutôt comme un syndicat. Ce fut une période agitée due au nombre de conflits générés par cet organisme. Ainsi, le « College » est entré en conflit avec les universités au sujet de la formation des maîtres, il n'imposait aucune discipline à ses membres et ne tenait pas compte des plaintes formulées contre eux. À la suite d’un rapport très critique à son endroit, le « College » fut remplacé par le B.C. Teachers’ Council, organisme sous le contrôle rigoureux du ministère de l’Éducation
Establishing Pathways for Woman in Education: Never-Married Women Career Teachers
No full textAbstract:This paper examines the professional activities of never-married women teachers. The ‘spinster’ teacher was not considered a potential ideal career teacher, in part, because women were not considered long-term workers. Until the mid-1940s, most school districts refused to hire married women teachers and so remaining single was the only option to continue in the profession. These career teachers were forced to deal with the same short shrift faced by young short-term women teachers though they were trying to establish themselves in the profession. Without established pathways and facing discrimination in employment, these never-married women persevered to have long careers and to make contributions to their professional associations. These teachers were in the forefront of women who broke the glass ceiling into what had been male preserves in the profession and in teachers’ associations.Résumé:Cet article s'intéresse aux activités professionnelles des enseignantes qui ne se sont jamais mariées. Il était difficile d'imaginer des enseignantes « vieilles filles » comme des femmes faisant carrière en partie parce qu'on ne les voyait pas comme travailleuses à long terme. Jusqu’au milieu des années 1940, la plupart des commissions scolaires refusaient d’engager des enseignantes mariées et la seule option pour poursuivre dans l'enseignement était de rester célibataire. Ces femmes de carrière étaient confronté aux mêmes difficultés que les jeunes travaillant à court terme malgré leurs efforts pour s’établir dans le métier. Ne jouissant d'aucun précédent, elles ont eu à affronter de la discrimination à l’embauche. Pourtant, ces femmes célibataires ont persévéré en menant de longues carrières et en participant à leurs associations professionnelles. Ces enseignantes étaient au premier rang parmi ces femmes qui ont brisé le plafond de verre en entrant dans les domaines auparavant réservés exclusivement aux hommes tant au sein de la profession que dans les associations professionnelles
“A Precarious Enterprise”: A Case Study of Western Canadian Regional Educational Publishing, 1980-1989
Get PDFThis study explores the dramatic rise and demise of Douglas & McIntyre (Educational) as a case study of western regional publishing in Canada. During its nine years of life, and before its sale to the multinational firm, International Thomson, this small regional publisher produced a ground breaking social studies series, as well as a health series, and other books. Factors in favour of regional educational publishing were: a rise in Canadian nationalism which often manifested itself regionally, political lobbying, the right employees, and Ministry of Education textbook policies. Factor which mitigated against success were: pedagogical change, competition from American subsidiaries, limitations on access to capital funding, allegiances of company principals, provincial autonomy with regard to education, a change in Ministry of Education textbook policies, and the ascendance of multinational firms
