Urban security and the crisis of values in a risk society: elements for reflection and research
Get PDFAbstract: Urban security has become one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, shaped by the complexities of modern urban life. As cities grow and evolve, they face unprecedented security challenges that transcend traditional notions of crime prevention. These challenges encompass social, cultural, economic, and psychological dimensions, deeply intertwined with societal transformations.
In the context of what sociologist Ulrich Beck refers to as the risk society, rapid globalization, technological advancement, and cultural diffusion have disrupted traditional social values. This disruption has created environments of uncertainty and fear, where mutual trust and social cohesion are eroded. As Émile Durkheim highlighted, such states of anomie can lead to social disorganization, further complicating urban security.
This article seeks to explore the relationship between urban security and the crisis of values, addressing the central question: How does the crisis of values in a risk society impact urban security? By examining this issue through a sociological lens, the study emphasizes the need to view security not only as a technical domain but as a social practice rooted in collective values.
Using Morocco as a case study, the article delves into the dynamics of urban insecurity and value transformation in a rapidly changing society. It aims to provide a deeper understanding of these phenomena and proposes strategies for fostering cohesive, secure urban environments.

Resumen: La seguridad urbana se ha convertido en uno de los desafíos más apremiantes del siglo XXI, moldeada por las complejidades de la vida urbana moderna. A medida que las ciudades crecen y evolucionan, enfrentan desafíos de seguridad sin precedentes que trascienden las nociones tradicionales de prevención del crimen. Estos desafíos abarcan dimensiones sociales, culturales, económicas y psicológicas, profundamente entrelazadas con las transformaciones de la sociedad.
En el contexto de lo que el sociólogo Ulrich Beck denomina sociedad de riesgo , la rápida globalización, el avance tecnológico y la difusión cultural han perturbado los valores sociales tradicionales. Esta disrupción ha creado entornos de incertidumbre y miedo, donde la confianza mutua y la cohesión social se han visto erosionadas. Como destacó Émile Durkheim, tales estados de anomia pueden llevar a la desorganización social, complicando aún más la seguridad urbana.
Este artículo busca explorar la relación entre la seguridad urbana y la crisis de valores, abordando la pregunta central: ¿Cómo afecta la crisis de valores en una sociedad de riesgo a la seguridad urbana? Al examinar este tema desde una perspectiva sociológica, el estudio enfatiza la necesidad de entender la seguridad no solo como un ámbito técnico, sino como una práctica social arraigada en valores colectivos.
Utilizando a Marruecos como estudio de caso, el artículo profundiza en las dinámicas de la inseguridad urbana y la transformación de valores en una sociedad en rápido cambio. Su objetivo es proporcionar una comprensión más profunda de estos fenómenos y proponer estrategias para fomentar entornos urbanos seguros y cohesionados.

News from the Chapters 1997-1998
Get PDFThe 1997-98 school year saw an increase in volunteering for GTU members. A new initiation criterion for members is to donate five hours for the semester at any of the many off campus sites that needed help. This is an activity sponsored through the Campus Volunteer Center and is a good way to offer community service. We hosted two successful canoe trips this year: the fall trip was on our own Evergreen Lake and the spring trip was on the Vermillion River. Our members, along with the Anthropology Club, continued to keep our ISU Nature Trail clean with regularly scheduled clean up days. Geography Awareness Week was packed with various events including a bake sale, the Geography Faculty Appreciation Luncheon which was well attended, Where in the World-Name That Landscape Game, County Local Geography Bee, Annual White Elephant Auction which raised $170, and movie night showing Mosquito Coast. Six students were initiated Fall Semester with a dinner and ritual initiation held at Lucas Grill

Get PDFDevelopments in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) have provided a practical and economical uses to a variety of disciplines. This paper focuses on the application of this technology to a geologic region using polygon analysis techniques. This application evaluates the feasibility of such methods as compared to conventional geologic field techniques. The Llano Uplift region of central Texas is well defined morphologically and geologically which provides good ground control for aerial photography. A GIS/RS-based analysis scheme is used to extract geologic information from morphological features resulting from surface and subsurface shaping agents. GIS polygon establishment and layer development are defined for geomorphologic and spectral features which serve as a basis for geologic interpretation
