Navigating Artificial Intelligence Governance: Insights from South African Higher Education IT Decision-Makers
Academics and students alike can benefit from the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. AI governance lowers AI risks while ensuring that anticipated AI use objectives are achieved. However, research on AI governance has been lacking, especially in higher education in emerging economies such as South Africa. In light of this serious research gap, the current study presents the findings of a qualitative exploratory investigation of the maturity and preparedness of AI governance in South African higher education institutions. Informed by a combination of the TOE framework, the traditional IT governance model and the adapted IT governance maturity assessment model, semi-structured interviews were conducted with academic and ICT decision makers from two public and three private higher education institutions in South Africa to determine their insights on the state of readiness and maturity of AI governance. The results show that AI components are widely used in higher education information systems. However, the findings showed that these higher education institutions were not in any way prepared for AI governance. The report recommends that risks associated with AI and learning should be acknowledged and countered as is done by the developed world\u27s established AI regulatory systems
News from the Chapters1991-1992
The 1991-1992 school year for the Alpha Chapter of GTU was truly a successful one with 25 active members participating in quite a few events. During National Geography Awareness Week we sold world T-shirts at the student union, held a geography quiz contest, and had our annual Geography White Elephant Auction which brought in over $350.00. We had our Christmas Party at the local Best Western with great food and happy spirits. Throughout the year members participated in the Return to Prairie at Funks Grove where we cleaned out bushes and burned grass. We also had weekly Thursday Happy Hours at the local pizza parlor. The owners enjoyed our good manners and company so much that they gave us a pizza party on the house
Effect of Emotion on Cognitive Speed
Emotion has been shown to affect cognitive processing in several ways; scope of thinking, memory, and mental processing speeds. Previous research tends to suggest that ‘positive’ emotions broaden thought-action repertoire, resulting in the ability to make faster decisions. ‘Negative’ emotions have been shown to result in the opposite, dulling reaction speeds and thought processes. Research has also shown that colors can affect emotion, with bright colors like yellow being linked to more ‘positive’ emotions, and duller colors like black or brown being linked to more ‘negative’ emotions. In this investigation I used the color red to signify anger, blue to represent sadness, and yellow to symbolize happiness. These three colors were coupled with angry, sad, and happily charged words to see if they affected the speed with which participants could verify the color of the words. The words were shown to participants in Dr. Christina Salnaitis’ Cognitive Psychology class via a computerized Stroop Task. There was a significant statistical difference in the speeds with which participants could identify the word colors. Basic words with no emotional connections were identified the fastest. Words with emotional connotations paired with colors that matched those emotions were the second fastest. Emotional words paired with colors that had opposing emotional connections were the slowest. This shows that both colors and emotional words can impact cognitive speeds and sets the stage for further research on the impact of colors on emotion and cognition
Weaker Instantaneous Connectivity, But Greater Lagged Connectivity, between Brain Regions in Mild Cognitive Impairment
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is the earlier stage of dementia, with much higher rates of transition to Alzheimer’s Disease than the non-MCI population. MCI may involve subtle damage to memory-related brain regions. Current research presumes that MCI patients have higher levels of connectivity than those with non-impaired brains, as a compensatory mechanism consistent with wider activation seen in healthy aging. Contradicting this hypothesis, data shows that the connectivity between the left and the right hippocampus, and between the left and the right dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex of MCI participants have significantly higher instantaneous connectivity in the control group. The findings further show that there exists a narrow and nonsignificant difference in the coherence and phase synchronization. The data are not consistent with our hypothesis. On the contrary, the overall information transmission of MCI between left and right brains areas lagged that of age-matched healthy controls each time
