No full textOur study investigates the relationship between board gender diversity and corporate social responsibility (CSR) outcomes by examining the dual sources of legitimacy that empower women directors to influence corporate governance. Drawing on critical mass theory and institutional legitimacy frameworks, this study posits that female directors derive legitimacy from both internal and external sources, which differentially impact CSR performance. Internal legitimacy emerges from positional power, specifically through formal leadership roles such as board chair or committee chairs, providing women directors with institutional authority to drive CSR initiatives. External legitimacy manifests when firms operate within industries characterized by higher female board representation among industry peers, creating normative pressure that facilitates enhanced CSR outcomes. Using a comprehensive dataset of US based public companies, this study employs quantitative analysis to examine the direct and interactive effects of board gender diversity, critical influence, and industry female board prevalence on CSR performance metrics. Findings reveal that board gender diversity, critical influence and industry board gender diversity significantly predict stronger CSR performance. However, the study does not find significant interaction effects between critical influence positions and industry gender prevalence, suggesting these legitimacy sources operate independently rather than synergistically. These findings advance theoretical understanding of gender diversity\u27s impact on corporate governance by identifying specific pathways through which female directors influence organizational outcomes
Students’ Experience With Virtual Reality Technology in Middle School Science
No full textThis study explores how students experience immersive virtual reality in a middle school science classroom. Utilizing the PhET simulation “My Solar System” as a model, an immersive virtual reality supported version was developed allowing students to interact collaboratively in the same virtual environment while manipulating variables to observe outcomes. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, 60 sixth-grade students were randomly assigned to either a control group that used laptops or an experimental group that engaged in the simulation with immersive virtual reality. Quantitative methods used pre- and post-tests while qualitative methods included semi-structured student interviews, screen recordings, and field notes. Analysis of the quantitative pre- and post-test data using a paired t-test showed that both the control and experimental groups had a statistically significant improvement in test scores, however, the experimental group had a greater gain in scores. Open coding of the qualitative student interview transcripts provided emerging themes relating to the need for an onboarding session prior to using the simulation independently and the integration of instructional prompts into the actual simulation. Potential barriers to implementation included the significant time commitment for all students to participate and finding adequate space for students to safely use immersive virtual reality technology. Further research is needed to determine whether additional scientific topics could benefit from the unique affordances of virtual reality and to identify effective strategies that support student collaboration within virtual environments
Illuminating Student Voice: Stories of Student Experiences With Graphic Novels in the Secondary ELA Classroom
No full textGrounded in Multiliteracy and Reader Response Theory, this narrative inquiry illuminates the voices of secondary ELA students as they engage with graphic novels as anchor texts. This study positions students as co-constructors of knowledge, recognizing that their individual backgrounds, identities, and prior experiences shape their understanding of and connection with multimodal texts. By centering student narratives, this research highlights the pedagogical value of visual storytelling and multiliteracies in fostering critical engagement, enhancing comprehension, and validating the diverse voices often marginalized in traditional literary analysis. The findings reveal that graphic novels, as multimodal texts, provide a unique platform for students to negotiate meaning through both visual and textual modes, thereby promoting deeper engagement and supporting the development of multimodal literacy skills essential for navigating today’s complex communicative landscapes

Mr. Graves has decried the narrow parameters of military geography, parameters made even more narrow by his arbitrary definition of the profession .. only those who are trained geographers and a component of the military. There is a distinct difference between membership in the military and those in our profession who study the character of an area in the context of military operations, even though a significant number of military geographers are associated with the military. His limited definition leaves out the historical military geographer, who has a military geography interest, but is not necessarily providing the military with geographic interpretations
GRP-088 Nutrilyzer: A Vision-Based App for Macronutrient Estimation and Blood Glucose Response Prediction
Get PDFThis study predicts postprandial glucose peaks and spike durations using 10-day multimodal data from 10 participants. Glucose, meals, workouts, and insulin doses were logged via the Nutrilyzer web app. Macronutrient content carbs, fats, and proteins was extracted using GPT-Vision, a highly accurate food analysis tool. These tuples were normalized to baseline glucose and aligned with a 3-hour window post-meal. Three models were tested: LSTM, Time Series Transformer, and ARIMA. LSTM performed best with 83.78% accuracy, followed by Transformer (71.43%) and ARIMA (62.41%). Results show the promise of AI-based food logging and time series modeling for personalized glucose forecasting
