    Warehouse Reconfiguration with ATS Lab

    The ATS Lab Warehouse Reconfiguration project is a collaborative effort between Kennesaw State University’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and ATS Lab, located in Marietta, GA. The goal of this project is to redesign the current warehouse layout to enhance operational efficiency, reduce travel time, and implement sustainable inventory management practices, including 5S and Kanban. Aaron Roob, ATS Operations Manager, and Franklin Hungerford, Continuous Improvement Manager, led this initiative. Our team, “Sick Sigma’s,” is composed of Ed Cantor, our Project Manager, who is working as an intern at ATS during this process; Dana Pazhouhesh (Process Engineer); Matthew Oshinski (Quality Engineer); and Samantha Sanchez (Data Analyst). Together, we aim to develop actionable proposals that enhance material flow, support scalability, and meet the business\u27s evolving needs. The objective of this project is to identify areas for improvement in the ATS warehouse to meet better changing business demands and to propose a design for a reconfigured warehouse. The proposed design will streamline inventory flow, and new systems will track order KPIs such as order turnover time. A better, more visible, efficient, and safe warehouse design will allow ATS to meet and exceed customer expectations. Current Inventory processing and storage solutions at ATS have led to inventory issues such as lost orders, broken parts, and long lead times. As the business expands, a more robust and structured inventory management system is necessary to avoid these issues and meet customer expectations. Improving warehouse design will enable ATS to operate more efficiently and effectively

    Research Reimagined: The Dissertation-to-Book Journey and Building a Scholar-to-Author Presence

    This capstone project, completed for a second master\u27s degree after a Ph.D., discusses aspects of transforming the doctoral dissertation on digital versus manual mediums in fashion design into a research monograph book proposal for academic publication. It reflects on a publisher\u27s requirements and the process, including de-thesizing the dissertation, planning the book\u27s structure, rewriting sample chapters to improve flow and readability, and creating a table of contents that demonstrates the work\u27s development into a publishable book rather than a dissertation. Another part of the project includes developing an author platform through blog posts and platforms such as Substack, preparing the groundwork for connections between the research and broader audiences. Due to the unpublished and proposed nature of the work, some details are not included in this document

    The Role of Design Thinking in EdTech Startups

    A move toward user-centered methods to innovation has been garnering attention due to the realization that consumers and users may offer possibilities and expertise. An innovative strategy that infuses creativity with user-centeredness is design thinking. Despite this, design thinking has received little attention in startups, particularly in the EdTech sector. Even while design thinking has become quite popular, there is a need for empirical study on design thinking in startups. This is because the majority of the research has been on large organizations. The paper explicates how design thinking facilitates the implementation of methodologies through iterative development, empathy mapping, and multidisciplinary collaboration. It also delves into the transformative role of design thinking among EdTech start-ups. This ultimately gives a practical link to design thinking and entrepreneurship in educational technology

    Online Learning, Disability, and the Use of AI: Lessons from a South African University

    This study explores the online learning experiences of students with disabilities (SWDs) at a South African university during the pandemic, investigating how institutional policy and AI-supported tools can address their challenges. Phase one used an interpretive qualitative approach involving semi-structured interviews with SWDs to identify key barriers, including inconsistent faculty practices, limited accessibility and emotional isolation. The findings highlight systemic gaps in digital support and the absence of inclusive pedagogical frameworks. Phase two expanded the analysis through a review of documents, focusing on university policies and the potential role of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in promoting equitable access. While some AI tools show promise, such as automated captioning and personalised learning interfaces, governance frameworks remain underdeveloped. The study therefore calls for a coordinated policy response and institutional commitment to digital inclusivity. The study contributes to ongoing debates around disability, digital transformation, and educational equity in higher education, particularly in low- and middle-income contexts

    Open When... : A Fiction Book

    Open When… is an adult contemporary romance about 27-year-old Adeline who, after losing her best friend to cancer, wants to simply disappear into a cloud of grief; but unbeknownst to Adeline, her dearly-departed best friend had other plans and proactively set in motion a plan to keep her going, including days filled with rollercoasters, speed dating, and matchmaking...from beyond the grave. I wanted to write a story that felt authentic to my own experience losing a best friend and that highlighted the importance of platonic love, as well as the pain of its loss. I also have an enduring passion for stories that show the way dramatically-opposed feelings coexist. In this case, it is grief and joy. While grieving the worst loss of her life, my main character is experiencing a new kind of joy for life, all while falling in love, and it is a beautiful juxtaposition. This Capstone picks up as she takes that first step into the unknown light ahead of her; and sometimes, that first step requires a pair of high heels

    Towards Age-Inclusive Human Computer Interaction: A Study of Text Message Adoption by Seniors

    Since mobile phones are increasingly becoming livelihoods-enablers to people in developing economies, inclusive interaction design are critical. This research on the age inclusivity of feature phones was motivated by some observation that elderly users had challenges with adoption of text messaging. We, therefore, hypothesized that elderly people had challenges with texting ‘cash’, ‘cheque’ or ‘visa’ on a feature phone. The paper investigates if the required agility and interface ergonomics were age discriminatory inhibitors of the adoption of text messaging given the diminishing dexterity and cognitive skills of seniors. Using Sen’s (1999) ‘heterogeneity of capabilities’ theory and Davis et al (1989)’s Technology Acceptance Model to sensitize an interpretivist qualitative study, the research shows that sophisticated the interaction design of feature phones SMS user interfaces are ergonomically inclement to seniors. Based on empirical research conducted in Zimbabwe, we found that the adoption of text messaging by elderly users is affected by un-user friendliness of the interface design of feature phone handsets, handset key pad complexity and low literacy levels. An age inclusive interface design framework is developed from Sen’s (1999) Capability approach and Davis et al (1989)

    Impacts of Halophila stipulacea invasion on organic matter dynamics in Thalassia testudinum dominated seagrass meadows, Puerto Rico

    Halophila stipulacea (Forsskål & Niebuhr) is a tropical seagrass native to the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean. In 2002, invasive populations of H. stipulacea were identified in the Caribbean Sea where it now forms large meadows, displaces native seagrasses, alters invertebrate and fish communities, and potentially affects organic matter dynamics in invaded meadows. This study investigated differences in organic matter dynamics between meadows of H. stipulacea and native Thalassia testudinum within the Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (JBNERR) on the southern coast of Puerto Rico. From March 2023-March 2024, sampling was conducted across four sites to investigate the expansion of H. stipulacea, detrital standing stocks in relation to seagrass cover, standing stock of epiphytes between seagrass species, sediment organic matter content across vegetation types, and decomposition rates. Litter bags of green tea, rooibos tea, H. stipulacea, and T. testudinum were used to compare decomposition of the two species. H. stipulacea expanded during the study and potentially displaced T. testudinum at one of the sampling sites. The invasive seagrass supported a lower quantity of epiphytes (H. stipulacea = 0.21 ± 0.42 mg/cm2, T. testudinum = 0.26 ±0.13 mg/cm2, p = 0.01673). H. stipulacea standing stock exhibited a positive trend with detritus standing stock, unlike T. testudinum. H. stipulacea tissues decomposed faster than T. testudinum (H. stipulacea = 0.77 ± 0.17 % loss/day, T. testudinum = 0.48 ± 0.11 % loss/day). No difference was found in sediment organic matter content between vegetation types. Results suggest that if H. stipulacea continues to spread, broader trophic dynamics and carbon cycling mechanisms may be affected, where H. stipulacea decomposes more rapidly and supports fewer epiphytes than dominant native seagrasses, potentially leading to less carbon storage and less energy for epiphytic/live tissue grazers

    EFFECTS OF BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION AEROBIC EXERCISE ON ACUTE METABOLIC RATE AND CARDIOVASCULAR RESPONSES

    Background: Blood flow restriction (BFR) enhances aerobic capacity and muscle mass when used with aerobic exercise (AE). However, there is little research on BFR with continuous AE and effects on cardiovascular and metabolic responses. This study aimed to determine the effects of BFR with AE on cardiovascular and metabolic responses. Methods: Visit 1 included a maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) test and familiarization followed. Visit 2 included AE with bilateral BFR (AEBFR) at 50% VO2max and 60% arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) for 15 min. Visit 3 included AE until the approximate calories from visit 2 were reached. During exercise, discomfort and pain were recorded every 3 min, VO2 and heart rate (HR) were monitored continuously, and changes in blood pressure (BP), HR, and weight were recorded approximately 10 min post-exercise. Bayesian Paired Sample T-tests were used to analyze results, with a BF10 ≥ 3 indicating more than moderate evidence for a difference between conditions. Results are presented as mean±SD. Results: 24 participants (13 females, age 22±3 yr, VO2max 43.6±9.7 kg/ml/min) completed this study. HR (bpm) was higher in AEBFR (140.24±14.81) than AE (122.26±12.29, BF10=1.153e8). Discomfort (A.U.) was higher in AEBFR (3.9±1.3) than AE (0.9±0.9, BF10=1.64e8). Pain (A.U.) was higher in AEBFR (2.7±1.7) than AE (0.5±0.9, BF10=17084.3). ΔSystolic BP (mm Hg, AEBFR (14.6±6.7), AE (11.9±5.7, BF10=2.77)) and ΔDiastolic BP (mm Hg, AEBFR (8.2±7.0), AE (6.4±7.1, BF10=0.34)) were anecdotal. Conclusion: AEBFR has a greater effect than AE during exercise, suggesting that those with cardiovascular concerns may consider avoiding an exaggerated response from BFR

    Por todo ello, leer ¡Qué chula te ves! es un acto de escucha intercultural. Cada poema, desde Majan Mundo hasta los textos finales, mezcla recuerdos personales con escenas cósmicas y denuncias históricas. En esa mezcla se produce una armonía que no es complaciente, sino insurgente: belleza como resistencia. Quizá por eso, al terminar de leer, resuena la frase del prólogo transformada en exclamación colectiva: “¡Qué chula te ves, Madre Tierra!”. No es solo un elogio, sino un compromiso político y espiritual: verla libre, viva y en plenitud; ver también a nuestros pueblos y culturas liberados del racismo y del despojo. En este sentido, el poemario de Daniel Caño es más que literatura: es memoria viva y horizonte de futuro para una Guatemala verdaderamente plurinacional
