AN INVESTIGATION OF CHARGE ACCOMMODATION BY THE ‘OXYANION HOLE’ OF SERINE PROTEASES USING GEOMETRIC AND COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS

    No full text
An analysis of geometry in known serine protease crystal structures was conducted to give insight into the structural similarities of the ‘oxyanion holes’ in trypsin and subtilisin. The mean conformations of segments forming the oxyanion holes of these enzymes indicated that almost all of their relevant torsions are within 20° of creating ideal, extensive orbital alignments throughout their sequences. We propose that these alignments are available for dynamic through-bond electronics and may accommodate transient oxyanionic character during the formation and hydrolysis of the acyl-enzyme intermediate in proteolysis. We also carried out ab initio modeling using the Spartan software to analyze charge accommodation in various oligomeric molecular backbones as a function of strand length, heteroatom and pi-bond content, and conformation. In doing so, we were able to explore the possible importance of these factors in charge accommodation. In the crystal structures, we also considered the possibility of dynamic orbital splicing between the enzymes and their substrates. This allows us to develop a new rationale for the geometric similarities in serine proteases and speculate on active-site dynamics during the proteolytic mechanism

Comments on Canadian Regionalism and the Media

    Get PDF
This research explores the impact of regionalism in Canada on the program design ofthe Canadian Broadcasting Corporation\u27s (CBC) Prime Time News. An analysis was performed on the content of this program to determine whether or not such regional considerations exist. The content analysis extracted two key variables, Total Segments and Segment Length, to determine if the CBC employed a decision making process imilar to the federal government\u27s de jure and de facto regional allocation process for governmental appointments. The paper concludes that such a decision-making process was not clearly endorsed by the analysis; however, additional statistical analysis illustrates the potential importance of demographic characteristics on program design

    The Geography of South Dakota

Edward P. Hogan has done a considerable service for the people of South Dakota by researching and writing The Geography of South Dakota, the first such volume in 78 years. It is a book that was long overdue, but such a project also needs the right person at the ri

Political Geography (2nd edition) by Martin Ira Glassner

Political Geography begins as all good geographies should, by situating what will follow temporally as well as spatially. It is possible, Glassner begins, . .. that many years from now historians will look back and judge that the twenty-first century . . . began during the period in which we are now living, roughly from the mid1980s to the mid-1990s. And even ifthis does not prove true, it is most certainly the case that the current period has witnessed substantial re-orientation of the relations between humans and political contexts of space. The spatial scale of human political geographies, it could be argued, is beginning to change. With the increasing realization that human rights, environmental problems, and migrants and refugees, among other phenomena, exist with little regard to borders, states cease to be the pre-eminent units of analysis. The proliferation of transnational economies and international organizations, along with smaller-scale phenomena such as ethnic separatist movements within states lead to further suspicion that the sovereign state model is decreasingly germane. Thus, this text takes on critical issues at a critical time

Rural Restructuring: Global Processes and Their Responses by Terry Marsden, Philip Lowe, and Sarah What more, editors.

(Cloth). To fully understand the transformation occurring in rural areas requires a broader, more geographically holistic approach to analysis ofthe rural system. Research needs to focus on the implications of reorganization of the international food system, as well as changes taking place in rural areas associated with capitalist recombinations and efforts at some form of rural sustainability

Usability, Visibility, and Style: LibGuides Usability Testing to Support Students’ Needs

    Get PDF
The study aimed to discover the level of knowledge students have regarding LibGuides, the preferred navigational layout, and how students use guides to conduct research. Ten undergraduate students par-ticipated in a mixed-methods study consisting of semi-structured interviews and usability tasks. The study revealed that the usability test was the first time any of the participants had interacted with a guide, resulting in data free from bias or previous experience. Participants did not exhibit a clear prefer-ence for navigation style, and an emphasis was placed on the importance of an aesthetically pleasing design and a functional search bar. The study\u27s findings offer insights into the most effective ways of de-signing and implementing LibGuides to ensure optimal usability, highlighting the importance of library instruction for marketing while providing a section on changes made by the library to increase guide usage

Editorial Comments: Why Are You A Geographer?

Many geographers have been asked this question, and I perhaps more than most because I am a special kind of human geographer, one who has published books with such titles as Dominance and Affection and Passing Strange and Wonderful, which do not sound like those that a geography professor will assign. To the question, then, I have three answers, each suited to a different level of the questioner\u27s sophistication and seriousness. At a party, when people are more interested in not spilling Pepsi on their coat than anything truly intellectual, my reply goes like this. I traveled a lot as a child and as a young person, and there is nothing like travel-especially foreign travel-to stimulate one\u27s interest in geography. Well, everyone accepts that. The conversation stops there and then, or degenerates into vague recallings of my last summer in Maine

Documenting Blended Learning Resilience During Infrastructure Deficiencies

    Get PDF
Blended learning is a combination of eLearning and traditional face-to-face learning. Since challenges have been identified related to blended learning that hinder effective teaching and learning, this study examined student opinions of this learning model. The aim was to get a deep understanding of its effectiveness given infrastructure deficiencies. Twelve in-depth interviews were conducted with students at a university in Zimbabwe that uses blended learning, and an interpretivist paradigm was adopted. The Zone of Proximal Development proposed by Vygotsky was utilized to conceptualize the cognitive development of the students, and third-generation activity theory (AT), developed by, was used for evaluating the home and university activity systems. Results indicate that asynchronous blended learning, supported by a learning management system, allows content to be downloaded for offline study and hence may be adopted in universities with limited information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure. The study adds to the narratives on blended learning implementation in countries with developing economies
