“The Accounting is Scrupulous”: No Country for Old Men and the Specter of the Vietnam War
Get PDFThis essay argues that Cormac McCarthy, in his novel, No Country for Old Men (2005), presents readers, however obliquely, with the dangerous legacy of American militarism and the doomed struggle to maintain one’s belief in “American exceptionalism” in the face of such bloodshed. I address three clusters or groupings of textual echoes of the Vietnam War that appear prominently in No Country for Old Men while discussing their significance. I conclude by reflecting upon the absence of almost all of these references in the Coen brothers’ otherwise superb, Academy Award - winning film adaptation (2007), particularly in light of the recent withdrawal from Afghanistan, and briefly consider the significance of that erasure.departmental bulletin pape
On the Role of Sleep in Comprehensively Promoting Health during the Growth Period
Get PDFThree groups were classified based on the growth period: infants, children, and students. We determined how the groups spent their days, including repeated sleeping (including rest) and wakefulness (life activities). The following findings are a result of the outline of each stage.
1) In early childhood, children's sleep is influenced by caregivers, so adults need to understand the importance of children's sleep. In daily lives, instead of complaining of lack of sleep, children may signal this in a variety of ways, such as “wanting to take an unnecessary nap” or “grumbling when being woken up in the morning.”
2) Because food, sleep and defecation are related and because the living conditions of “good food,” “good sleep,” and “good bowel movements” support health management, an improvement in sleeping, for example, (as part of daily habits) will form a desirable cycle in the children and student groups.
3) Framing the conditions necessary for female students to lead a pleasant life as the main causes of the manifestation of subjective symptoms, the following were identified among others: “sufficiency of sleep time,” “establishing an early-morning life rhythm,” “ensuring enough activities of daily living,” “improving physical and mental strength,” and “managing meals.”
It is best to have a morning lifestyle rhythm to improve diurnal variation in the number of complaints of subjective symptoms.departmental bulletin pape
A Case Study of Teacher Behavior in PE Class: Teacher Questioning Strategies for Enhancing Communication Among Students
Get PDF体育科授業において「伝える力」の育成が今日的課題の一つとなっている。児童が他者に伝える学習行為は「何がどうなればよいか」を自己課題として持っていることが前提となる。その実際を日常的な体育科授業に見出すとともに、課題を明確にする教師の活動の在り方を追究した。児童の主体的で課題解決的な学習を引き出す教師の活動として、これまでに小林ほかが学習過程及び発問の重要性について論じている。筆者はこれまでに小学校体育科授業の分析から学習過程の工夫及び教師の発問の意義を事例的に見出してきた。本研究では特に児童の「伝え合い」の内容に着目して教師の活動の在り方を事例的に追究した。
学習の目標・内容に沿った課題意識を児童自身が明確に持つことにより、児童が他者へ「伝える」という行為が本時の学習目標の達成に向けて有効な働きかけとなる。学習に有効な児童相互の「伝え合い」となるためには、児童が自己の課題を明確に持つための教師の活動が不可欠である。教師の活動として本時授業で「教えたいこと」を児童自身が「学びたいこと」として把握する場面（集団思考場面）を学習過程に設定することと、その場面で教師が「教えたいこと」を明確に持ったうえで児童へ問いかけることが必要となる。学習場面と教師の発問の重要性についてこれまでにも事例的に明らかにしてきたが、本研究では特に、教師の発問の内容が児童の「伝える」活動の質を高めることが授業の分析によって示唆された。
自己課題を明確にした学習活動が児童相互の「伝え合い」を引き出すこと、そこで伝え合う内容が本時学習目標の達成に直結すること、さらには教師の発問が児童の問いかけにも反映することを事例的に見出した。教師の発問によって指導目標に迫る児童の思考・判断が促進され、自己課題が意識されるとともに、その結果として「伝え合い」が本時学習の深化につながり、学習が本時目標の達成に向けて質的に高められたと言える。一般教授学において発問が指導の核になることは周知のところであり、発問研究が深められているが、体育科授業における教師の発問は、動き方を伴うという点で他教科と異なる部分があることが考えられ、問いかけを発する場面での環境整備も必要になることが考えられた。この点においても体育科授業における発問の研究が求められることが示唆された。departmental bulletin pape
Antioxidant Activity of Various Japanese Apricot Syrups with Different Soaking Conditions
Get PDF浸漬条件が梅シロップの抗酸化活性に及ぼす影響について検討した。その結果、広島県産（品種不明）の圧力鍋梅シロップは抗酸化活性が最も高かったが、梅シロップの抽出量は最も少なく、圧力鍋は梅シロップの調製には向かなかった。産地別梅シロップの抗酸化活性は、観賞用の完熟梅を多く用いた広島県産が高く、南高梅の青梅を多く用いた宮崎県産と和歌山県産は低かった。梅シロップの抗酸化活性は、梅の品種あるいは熟度の違いが最も大きな要因であると考えられた。ビン漬けと炊飯器では、ビン漬け４週間が高い傾向を示し、果皮の色では赤が高かった。炊飯器では浸漬時間の長い24時間が高く、氷砂糖よりきび糖や黒糖で高かった。梅シロップの抗酸化活性と総ポリフェノール含量との間に正の相関関係が認められた。梅ジュースの官能評価ではきび糖が高評価であった。以上のことより、完熟梅ときび糖を使用すると抗酸化活性の高い梅シロップができると考えられた。departmental bulletin pape
Aspects of Student’Learning in Basic Nursing Practice Ⅱ as Seen from Practice Records : －Based on Personal Records－
Get PDF本研究は、基礎看護学実習Ⅱにおける学生の学びの詳細を明らかにすることを目的とし、特に自分自身についての記述に焦点を当てて検討した。研究方法は、基礎看護学実習Ⅱに参加した68名の学生の実習記録簿－日々の記録－、述べ508シートを研究対象とし、質的分析を行った。分析の結果、自分自身に関する記述の内容は【受け持つことへの思い】【患者への対応】【患者からの支え】【知識・技術の不足】【看護に対する姿勢】【自己効力感】【残念・反省】【自己の振り返り】【達成感】【自分の成長・展望】の10のカテゴリーが生成された。それぞれのカテゴリーは、さらに33のサブカテゴリーによって詳細に説明することが出来た。また記述内容は、実習経過とともにネガティブな記述から、ポジティブな記述へと変化していた。ポジティブな記述は、受け持ち患者との関わりの中で得られた思いであった。教員は個々の学生のレベルに合わせた、つまり実習の初期に多く見られるネガティブな記述を踏まえ、「できている」という肯定感を持たせるような指導場面を設定することが重要であると考える。departmental bulletin pape
The Impact of Imposed Rapid Change on Society - A Psychosocial Analysis -
Get PDFJapan is a 20th century world power, technologically advanced, self-sufficient, and independent. It has however been forced to adapt culturally. In many areas the adaptation has succeeded. However, many areas have failed. It’s dangerous to have a “mixed-measure” of progress within a society. This type of societal imbalance results in one area of society benefiting at the expense of another, and, paradoxically, reduces the degree of benefit ultimately gained by those hoping to reap the rewards. For example, birth rates have fallen dramatically over recent years, a case of more opportunities for women looking to forge a career as opposed to starting a family? Or are there other factors involved? An increased workforce would benefit many sectors of business and the economy, but it would have a detrimental effect on other areas of life which in turn negates the potential for any real progress, a condition that can be termed as “The social progress paradox”. Changes are needed if Japan is to expand its core base in education, business, and mental health care. Based on a psychosocial analysis, grounded in empirical data, this paper addresses these issues, clarifies the main causal factors, and offers recommendations for the future.departmental bulletin pape
