Executive Function in Monolingual and Bilingual Preschoolers, and its Relation to Self-regulated Learning in Preschool Classrooms

    No full text
Building on the previous research showing that bilingualism enhances executive function, and executive function is a necessary factor in successful learning, this study attempted to investigate the impact of bilingualism on executive function (EF) and its relation to self-regulated learning (SRL) inside preschool classrooms among monolingual and bilingual preschoolers. To test this hypothesis, executive function of 20 monolingual and 18 bilingual children aged 35 to 59 months was assessed through the HTKS-R task, while their classroom teachers evaluated their emotional, prosocial, cognitive and motivational learning development through the CHILD 3-5 assessment tool. Results did not show bilingual advantage in EF and SRL performance (p = .193 and .703 respectively). Parental education was a significant predictor of both EF (p = 0.004). Implications of findings, limitations and directions for future research are discussed

Drawing from the theories of Linda Hutcheon, as articulated in her book A Theory of Adaptation (2006), among others, such as anthropologist Fernando Ortiz’s theory of transculturation, and Yana Elsa Brugal and Beatriz J. Rizk’s studies of African rituals, the present essay examines the socio-cultural and political significance of two Afro-Cuban adaptations of 17th century European drama. I explore the ways in which Otra tempestad (1997) by Raquel Carrió and Flora Lauten, and 2 Fuenteovejuna (2009), adaptation and mise en scène by Mephisto Teatro, under the directorship of Liuba Cid, impel Cuban and international spectators alike, to broaden and shift their viewpoints on established cultural and political referents. Otra tempestad is a free version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest that likewise draws inspiration from African religious myths and Caribbean folklore. Teatro Mephisto’s adaptation of Fuenteovejuna transforms Lope de Vega’s Golden Age text into a syncretic platform in which the original Baroque verse becomes interlaced with the prose of José Martí, the theater of Cuban playwright Virgilio Piñera, and Santería rituals. I suggest that these Caribbean adaptations promote interhuman dialogue and exchange amidst a broader backdrop of globalization. Both stagings reveal that African rituals are not folkloric traditions of the past, but rather make up an integral part of Cuban quotidian life. Moreover, the Cuban women dramatists poetically represent contemporary scenes so as to stage a critique of the island’s totalitarian government

ABSTRACT The intellectual, artistic, and biographical connections between Federico García Lorca and María Zambrano have already been highlighted by some researchers —including Virginia Trueba Mira and Goretti Ramírez— and yet they are not a specific focus of Lorca studies. These connections are usually studied with regard to Zambrano’s Lorca anthology, published after the poet’s death and which she wrote an introduction to during her exile in Chile, and by exploring Zambrano’s voice as a literary critic. But beyond that, the purpose of this paper is to argue that Lorca’s theater, especially his less rationalist works, can be read in the light of Zambrano’s thought. El público (1930) is a dramatic work that is part of the so-called “impossible theater” by Lorca, whose surrealist tendencies address recurring themes such as homosexual desire, gender, and an examination of bourgeois theater. This paper offers an interpretation of this play through Zambrano’s notion of poetic knowledge, which is a response to the crisis of European rationalism that she presents in her books Filosofía y poesía (1939) and Pensamiento y poesía en la vida española (1939). These philosophical works are considered the first descriptions of what would later become known as “poetic reason,” a new epistemology and arguably the most important concept within the Zambranian system of thought. Progress Towards Efficient Means of Synthesizing Natural Product Frondosin D

    No full text
Frondosin D is a natural product generated by the marine sea sponge Dysidea frondosa that has a litany of documented medicinal effects, including acting as a potent anti-inflammatory, anti-HIV, and tumor suppressant agent. So far, the Ovaska lab methodology has successfully utilized a tandem 5-exo dig cyclization to form the core seven membered ring in three, A-C, of the five isoforms in the frondosin family. In addition to leveraging the reliability of this approach, two major ring construction sequences, A-D-B-C and D-C-B-A, have been explored as viable pathways in synthesis efforts of frondosin D. This present study investigated variations of the D-C-B-A approach, wherein modifications to both key tertiary alcohol and tricyclic ketone intermediates were performed in order to facilitate the installation of the A ring system to the remainder of the molecular scaffold. One of these attempts appeared to be successful in affording the tetracyclic skeleton of frondosin D. It is expected that the Ovaska lab will build off the progress associated with development of the structural core, in addition to exploring the advantages of other ring construction techniques, in order to chart an efficient route towards the total synthesis of natural product frondosin D

In the summer of 2024, I participated in the Design Assembly program, a competitive community design and build initiative led by McLeod Architects in Middlebury, VT. This immersive 9-day project involved 10 students, two architects, and a builder, working together to design and construct a kayak storage shed for a rural New England community. Through a rigorous process starting with brainstorming and design refinement, followed by hands-on construction, I developed crucial skills in organization, collaboration, and time management. The experience, which began with overcoming site challenges and culminated in the successful completion of the project, provided me with a deeper understanding of architectural processes and project dynamics. It was a blend of practical learning, teamwork, and personal growth, offering valuable lessons and lasting memories

The research centered around maternal mortality focuses especially on black maternal health, as the US has had consistently poor maternal mortality outcomes, with black/African American women almost three times more likely to experience a pregnancy related death. With the Summer Science Research Institute, I worked with the Statistics and Biology department to conduct research on maternal mortality rates within the United States using bibliometric analysis, which is a statistical methodology that enables researchers to study trends and patterns of a specific topic through literature publications. With this experience, students are able to work with this faculty member to design and conduct a research project, enabling students to both achieve individual goals, and build relationships with faculty and peers
