Squash Urbano Colombia Squash Coach and English Aide Internship
No full textThis reflection paper describes my summer internship with Squash Urbano Colombia in Cartagena, a program that combines squash training with English education for children. Supported by funding from the Hale Center, I was able to live near the facility and take part in daily activities, beginning with early morning practices and continuing through afternoon coaching and English classes. The first days were challenging due to the intense heat and humidity, but I adapted and grew into my role as both a coach and teacher. Some of the most meaningful moments included one-on-one sessions with students and leading discussions during sexual education lessons with older kids, where I drew on my own past as a former participant in the same program. This experience strengthened my leadership, communication, and time management skills while also giving me a new perspective on how sports and education can empower communities. Ultimately, the internship was both personally rewarding and professionally formative, and it reinforced my interest in mentoring and working with youth in programs that create positive social impact

I gained technical abilities, developed a deeper sense of cultural sensitivity, and learned the importance of teamwork and communication in providing quality care to patients. I spent time on a dementia care floor and here I learned the value of self-compassion and how important it is for me to remain calm and reliable in challenging situations. I had the opportunity to observe quality care and inappropriate care which inspired me to commit to building genuine relationships with my patients to support their mental and physical health. This course gave me a strong clinical foundation needed to pursue my career and it deepened my passion for the field of nursing
