God lesning
âDe Andres stemmer i vår egenâ.
The Russian philosopher and literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin has analysed different types of discourses focusing on how they treat the voices of the Other. The main contribution Bakhtin made was to the theory of the novel. Bakhtin distinguished between monological and dialogical novels. Monological novels are dominated by one single voice, while dialogical novels enable the characters to express themselves autonomously.âââEven though Bakhtin mainly concentrated on novel studies, he also stressed the importance of respecting the voices of the Other within legal discourse. The purpose of legal texts is to defend the rights of the Others, and that makes it even more important to take their       voiÂces and opinions into account. The problem is however that no one has analysed in depth the possibility of adapting dialogism to such texts.âââThe aim of this article is to discuss whether Bakhtinâs distinction between monological and dialogical discourses, as well as the analytical tools he uses to distinguish between them, are applicable to written judgements. My objective is to test out Bakhtinâs theories on a legal judgeÂment in a child protection case from 1953
Forskningsetiske problemer i cyber- ÂkulÂturen
Cyberculture (or net culture) is growing and becoming increasingly rich and manifold, and is consequently an obvious field for studies of communication, social action, genre etc. However, when doing Internet research the researcher has to cope with a technology that is developing fast and making new, unpredicted things possible. Itâs also true that not all ordinary net users, particularly not children and youths, are concerned about the dangers on the net, like privÂacy matters, and many slightly illegal activities are going on (such as the transfer of copyright music). The existing rules and guidelines for doing net research therefore tend to be very restrictive, to the degree vast fields of human activities are closed to research. But society needs to know what is going on in cyberculture, and research is therefore necessary. I consquently argue for the need for net-ethical principles that will include the researcher as a ânaturalâ participant in cyberculture. Research should definitely not intimidate net users and reduce the netâs liberating potential, but net users should be aware of the open nature of the net. This is a double challenge that should be faced in developing net-ethics for both users and researchers. Neither of them can survey all technological possible consequences already existing or approaching, but like in society at large, they can find reguÂlations that are tolerable and beneÂficial to society. The first principle I propose concerns the userâs self-decision, his autonomy, and hence the need for informed consent for doing research on his or her texts. But this should be balanced with a principle of development where the judgement of the researcher and the technological development is taken into consideration. Not all research without consent Âviolates autonomy in an unacceptable way. All net users should be aware that privacy on the net is always a quasi-privacy, because the net is an enormous system of computers and people woven together
Fra Dybbøl til trøbbel. Christopher Bruun som biografisk utfordring
Christopher Bruun (1839â1920) was one of the main figures within the Folk High School movement in Norway. This article has two main goals: First: to show how this movement has created Bruun both as a hero and as the opposite. Second: To launch an alternative and a much broader approach to the biographical construction of Christopher Bruun. By doing this, the article will deal with two opposite positions: the ideological one, which has promoted one specific picture of Bruun at the expense of other possible perspectives â and the more critical one, which rejected the character that the ideological interpretation had cultivated
The Dethronement of the Lion - a Commentary
The Dano- African lions that were imported to Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park a year ago are thriving. Four cubs were born on the first day of June and the happy news received a lot of media attention: For the first time in history, presumably, a lioness has given birth to offspring in Norway, and we are all welcomed to propose names for the newborn cubs (VGNett 2008). Quite a peculiar episode seen from a faunal point of view, since the most polarized question in the domestic debate on indigenous predators is whether the wolf should be allowed to propagate within Norwayâs borders. The trouble is that wolves are not yet kept in cages, and when a she-wolf has a litter, her cubs are not the object of naming competitions
Luktevannshus og snusdåser
The article discusses human beingsâ concept of smell in Europe and Norway during the time    period 1770 to 1820. It particularly focuses on the perception of fragrance and stench. The basis for the discussion is two small and decorative artifacts from Norsk Folkemuseumâs collections: a scent container and a snuff box, both in silver. These types of items were often used to exchange gifts between a man and a woman at engagements or weddings. Earlier research on these artifacts has focused on aspects like shape, style, material properties or their significance as gifts. This article takes on a more in-depth analysis to reveal in what types of cultural settings scent containers and snuff boxes were used. In order to understand why scent containers and snuff boxes were used, it is necessary to know the types of scents people of that era were surrounded by. Likewise, knowledge of the actual scent of the content in the scent containers and snuff boxes is necessary. The article discusses whether scent containers and snuff boxes were used in different social classes, and whether both men and women used them. The article concludes that scent containers and snuff boxes were used in situations that required protection from stench, both in the private and the public sphere
Mellom kulturens bokstav og kulturens ånd
This paper examines how certain aspects of modern cultural and anthropological thought is prefigured in Spanish missionary ethnography from the 16th Century. The Stage for this examination is set by an analysis of the critique of anthropology performed by Vassos Argyrou in Anthropology and the will to meaning. A postcolonial Critique (2002). Here Argyrou claims that modern anthropological consciousness still relates to âthe otherâ in ways that are prefigured by Spanish missionaries and theologians in the 16th Century. I test this narrative of continuity by analysing how Bartolomé de Las Casas and Bernardino de Sahagún describe the human sacrifice among the Aztecs in New Spain [Mexico]. By focusing on these early ethnographers I am able to sketch a model of a fundamental difference between to pre-cultural and pre-modern discourses on heathen culture; one based on natural theology and another based on demonology
Ulrick Beck & Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim (2014). Distant Love.
En slik likestilling er også problematisk fordi intimiteten ikke egentlig blir utforsket: âIntimacy is not something to be found in these relationships, but rather is that specific relationshipâ (s. 13).
Since the turn of the millennia, the term ”extreme weather” has been used very frequently in Norwegian media. It first appeared in the mid-1990s. This article tries to explain the rise of this new category of weather, by a historical comparison between the establishment of a Norwegian storm warning system in the second half of the 19th century and the establishment of a Norwegian extreme weather warning system by the end of the 20th. In both cases, the state was active. In the first case by establishing a national Meteorological institute and covering the necessary telegraph expenses for warnings by telegraph. In the second case by making this Meteorological institute a part of a new national system for protection against disasters. Both events were stages in a long term process of giving bad weather individuality, in order to make the warnings recognizable in growing currents of electronic information. However, extreme weather is not defined by physical properties, but by its expected economic, technical and social consequences. Thus, it’s not a meteorological term, but an institutional one
