Potential adaptations of an E. Coli Colony on the surface of Venus
The conditions of the surface of Venus are extremely harsh, and there is no naturally evolved life on Venus. E. coli is a bacteria with a number of subtypes and adaptations to varying environments. This paper covers a number of adaptations a theoretical colony of E. coli bacteria could evolve, based on pre-existing adaptations of E. coli to its natural environments
What's love got to do with it?
Clifford the Big Red Dog has grown to be around 25 feet tall and the reason for this is still unknown. His owner Emily Elizabeth has said that his size is due to her love: the more she loves him, the bigger he gets. However, this paper disputes that there are other reasons causing his abnormal growth. Gigantism could be a reason as to why he has grown so much as a puppy. His continued growth, even as an adult, is likely to be due to Acromegaly. Both are caused by excessive growth hormone (GH) being secreted. A high in protein diet can increase the secretion of GH and IGF-1 due to its high L-Arginine content. ACSL4, a gene found in large dog breeds, may have been over-expressed and led to his increased growth and bulking
How did God part the Red Sea?
This article will discuss physical methods to explain the Biblical account of Moses parting the Red Sea with the help of God, as told in Exodus. Meteorological phenomena, such as gale force winds and negative surges, as well as tidal mechanisms, such as Rossby waves will be discussed. Due to the relief dependent complex nature of these phenomena, possible locations where the Israelites crossed will be also be theorised
Exploding swamp dragons
A personal favourite pet of the noblemen and women, Draco vulgaris, more known as swamp dragons, are small flying dragons. These dragons consume a range of objects that have combustible capabilities this allows them to produce flames. A consequence of this is that the dragon has a habitat of exploding due to indigestion or over-excitement. The paper discusses the possible reasons that the dragons explode and the chemicals that may be involved
The Khanenko Museum as Noble Double-wounded
In this article, I consider the Khanenko Museum as noble and double-wounded, a concept that emerges from two trains of thought. The first pertains to the attack on Kyiv on 10 October 2022, which destroyed the Khanenko Museum, famous for owning the largest collection of global art in Ukraine. The second stream of thought is related to theories of wounding as a specific condition, an aesthetic mode, a way of experiencing time and space. These theories allow us to conceive of the grief and pain caused by destruction, but not necessarily to surmount it
P2 8 Avoiding Exams To The Extreme
This paper determines the velocities and consequential forces needed to move the Earth to outside of the habitable zone (0.7 AU). A Hohmann transfer is used and requires two changes in velocity, first at 2,700 m/s to achieve an elliptical orbit and second at 2,900 m/s to achieve a closer circular orbit. The forces required are 1.87 x 10^22 N and 1.34 x 10^22 N respectively
P4 4 A Gloopy Demise
In this paper we discuss the possibilities of Augustus Gloop from the book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” surviving from falling into the chocolate river.It was found that the heat from the chocolate would take 5.3 hours to raise their internal temperature to a lethal value of 42°C. Albeit a long time, the probability of him being able to swim though the chocolate is slim due to the increased viscosity. Liquid chocolate is 40 times more viscous than water, and would therefore probably drown before heat exhaustion or damage
A3 5 Harnessing Hurricane Power
This paper investigates the effectiveness of using wind turbines in hurricanes to generate power.We use power equations to find out how long it would take a large turbine, in different hurricanestrength categories, to generate enough power to meet the University of Leicester’s yearly campuspower usage.We find that for the strongest hurricanes (Category 5), it would take 30 hours tomatch the 2020/2021 energy usage of UoL’s campus
A2 1 Boiling water with stars
In this paper we explore how long it takes to boil 1kg of water using only the sun, and then replace the sun with different types of stars to compare the temperature environments on planetary surfaces. We find that the time taken can vary quite significantly for stars on both temperature extremes
A5 1 Engulfing the Earth
In this paper we calculate the number of cows that, if the Sun was replaced with a black hole of equal mass, would be needed to be sent into the black hole for the black hole to engulf the Earth. We find that 1.007 × 10^35 cows are required to increase the Schwarzschild radius such that the Earth is swallowed by the black hole, which is many orders of magnitude greater than the number of cows on Earth, making this an astronomically impractical method of destroying the Earth
