This paper considers the motion of a watermelon as it is dropped from the roof of a building, bouncing off a trampoline below onto the roof of a car, and calculates the watermelon to impact the car’s roof with a velocity of 12.4 metres per second at an angle of 20 degrees to the vertical

Using a scene from the BBC TV show Doctor Who where the time for an object to fall is used to estimate the depth of a hole on an alien planet, it is possible to estimate the acceleration due to gravity on this other world. Using Euler’s methods to take into account the drag of the falling object, it seems that the value of g on Skaro is 2.2 ms−

In this paper, we calculated the magnitude that an earthquake would need to be to release more energy than the Earth's gravitational binding energy, destroying the planet. We found this magnitude to be 18.83 on the Moment Magnitude Scale (the Richter Scale's successor)
A2 5 Localised Entirely Within Your Kitchen
In the Simpsons segment known as ``Skinner And The Superintendent", Skinner claims the aurora borealis is localised entirely within his kitchen, which shocks the Superintendent. In this paper we found the magnetic field strength required for a magnet, placed in the middle of Skinner's kitchen, to produce an aurora with the radius of said kitchen through collisional ionisation. We find this to be Tesla, a billion times greater then the magnetic field produced by the strongest neutron stars [3]
The implementation and effects of contemporary Problem-Based Learning techniques in the field of chemistry.
Chemistry courses are seeing an increasing inclusion of the relatively novel methods of Problem Based Learning (PBL). With roots dating back to 18th Century philosophers, it aims to develop the Higher Order Cognitive Skills (HOCS) of prospective graduates, alongside other transferrable skills and social benefits that traditional teaching has failed to build upon. The utilisation of real-world problem-solving projects in chemistry modules has a wide array of seemingly verifiable benefits but a lack of trained facilitators and minimal exposure of students to PBL at lower levels provides significant drawbacks to the methodology. This review looks at the pros and cons of PBL in detail to estimate its viability in future chemistry courses around the world

A mole is a unit for the amount of a substance so that one mole contains exactly 6.02214076 x 1023 particles, but a mole is also a furry mammal that lives underground and eats earthworms. As with all animals, they require sufficient space to live comfortably and to grow, and they have a preferred habitat. This paper explores how much space on the Earth is suitable for moles to inhabit and estimates how many Earths would be required to support a mole of moles
Antarctica's Kiss-Shot
In the light novel series Monogatari, the legendary vampire Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade once travelled to Antarctica, wishing to see the aurora australis. However, her method of leaving the continent was to jump from the South Pole to her next destination. The recoil from this jump ‘threatened to destroy’ the Antarctic landmass. This paper will discuss the implications of this jump using comparisons to crater forming impact events. After considering the composition of Antarctica, the energy generated by said jump would have been greater than the explosive yield of the global nuclear arsenal.
Electrogenesis, electrical discharge and storage in Pikachu
Using Pokédex entries and electric eels as a model organism, this paper will discuss generation, storage and discharge of electricity in Pikachu. Due its high voltage, generation of electricity using electrocytes alone is unlikely due to the unfeasible concentration gradient required. Electrocyte sodium channels are also likely activated by serotonin due to electrical discharge being dependent on the organisms emotional state. Pikachu cheek pouches store vast amounts of electrical energy and would likely require a capacitance akin to modern supercapacitors.
Life Trajectories of the Yubi Zhiguolun: From Qing Dynasty to British Exhibitory Space
Since the later stage of the Qing Dynasty, many imperial objects have been moved to Europe due to a series of Sino-European wars. Perceived as having less material value, Qing imperial books, manuscripts, and scrolls are studied less by contemporary scholars. The Yubi Zhiguolun (‘禦筆知過論’) is one example. The Qianlong Emperor wrote this introspective essay at the age of 71 (1781). Subsequently, it was reproduced as a scroll, carved in jade, presented in paper copies, and shared as a lacquered album. The lacquer album was originally stored in the Yuanmingyuan. It was brought to Europe after the Second Opium War. It is currently preserved in the British Library.To understand the Zhiguolun’s history, the author uses the concept of the ‘social life of things’. Travelling over time and space, its aesthetic value, social meaning, and emotional efficacy changed, corresponding to changes in its social relations. Here, the framework of the ‘social life of things’ will be mobilized to follow the Zhiguolun’s life trajectories over three phases: an indigenous life in the Qing context; the moment of rupture, as it departs from China; and its subsequent life in Europe
Immortality is Conditional: Annihilation in Hell
In the Bible, the nature of how individuals are punished in Hell has been long debated. In this paper, taking the Annihilationist viewpoint of the body and soul being completely destroyed in the fires of Hell, an estimate of the energy required to do so will be estimated. By considering the binding energies of atomic nuclei, and the nucleons themselves, a value of 6.27 exajoules was calculated in the case of a 70kg human, comparable to the yearly energy consumption of the UK
