    No full text
The contribution of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to economic prosperity is widely acknowledged worldwide. However, the empirical evidence in the literature on enhancing sustainable performance in manufacturing industries in developing countries is still insufficient. Referring to the theory of Triple Bottom Line (TBL), Contingency Theory (CT) and Resource Based View (RBV), this study mainly aims to explore the influence of systematic strategic planning, strategic business innovation, and competent human capital on the sustainable performance of the manufacturing SMEs in Palestine as well as the mediation influence of strategic flexibility and the moderating influence of turbulent environment. The study was motivated by the inconsistent findings and gaps in the existing literature. Most prior studies focused on studying the conventional performance of SMEs, which is economic performance, while this study focused on studying sustainable performance, which includes social, environmental, and economic performance. Data were obtained among 235 owners and directors from manufacturing SMEs operating in Palestine via a random sampling technique. The analysis of results via the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approach revealed that systematic strategic planning, strategic business innovation, and competent human capital positively influenced the sustainable performance of manufacturing SMEs. Meanwhile, mixed results were found upon investigating the mediating influence of strategic flexibility and the moderating influence of a turbulent environment. Strategic flexibility mediated all the relationships except the link between competent human capital and SMEs' sustainable performance. At the same time, the turbulent environment moderated only the relationship between systematic strategic planning and SMEs' sustainable performance. Lastly, the study provides key insights for directors, policymakers, and researchers on systematic strategic planning, strategic business innovation, competent human capital, strategic flexibility, turbulent environment, and sustainable performance. The study also discussed the limitations and outlined recommendations for future studies

The decision of the Court of Appeal approving the filiation of children born less than six months in 2017 brought polemic in the community because it contradicted the legal view of illegitimate children in Malaysia. However, the decision is seen to be in line with the fatwa by the Perlis State Fatwa Committee (JFN), which convicting the filiation of children born less than six months. However, the enforcement of the fatwa has faced difficulties due to obstacles from a technical point of view. Following this, a study was conducted to examine the submissions of Islamic scholars regarding the filiation of children born less than six months; as well as reviewing the submissions of JFN Perlis in determining the fatwa. The study also analyzed the necessity of the enforcement regarding the determination of filiation of children born less than six months according to JFN Perlis in Malaysia. Then, the study analyzes its feasibility for use in Malaysia. The study is qualitative in nature involving documentation, archiving and interviews. The findings were then analysed inductively using content analysis methods. The archive files that was examined are within 10 years, from 2009 to 2019, involving data from the agencies of the Social Welfare Department (JKM), and the Syariah Judiciary Department for five states, namely Perlis, Perak, Selangor, Terengganu and Johor. The interviews involved eight categories, namely (a) members of JFN Perlis; (b) a member of the Perlis Islamic Religious Council; (c) Syariah Judges; (d) JKM officers; (e) individuals with illegal status; (f) pregnant women without marriage; (g) the father of an illegitimate child; and (h) the individual to whom the affected party is referred. The results of the study show that the filiation of children born less than six months is based on Islamic arguments; as well as maslahah which is the priority of JFN Perlis in deciding the fatwa. The study also presents the existence of society's need for the filiation of children born less than six months and its enforceability based on loopholes in the legislation and the arguments of the opposing party. Finally, the study concludes that the filiation of children born less than six months can be implemented but first it requires some actions that the authorities need to take based on the implementation measures provided according to the legislation in the study. The implications from this research will become an input for the authorities to ensure that the welfare of the illegitimate child is the objective in the observation towards the implementation of filiation for the children born less than six months in Malaysia

The relationship between media sustainability coverage, community sustainability awarness, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) adoption by Dubai business firms

    No full text
The expectations regarding the adoption of corporate social responsibility (CSR) have not being fully meet by the business sector in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). This reflects the limited role of the sector in the country’s overall sustainable development. There is a noticeable lack of literature on this topic in the context of the Arab region, especially in the UAE and Dubai. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between sustainability-related media coverage, community awareness of sustainability, and CSR adoption by business firms in Dubai. It employs a mixedmethod approach, combining quantitative analysis through a questionnaire with qualitative insights gathered from semi-structured interviews. This study concludes that there is indeed a relationship between the level of CSR practices and strategies implemented by companies and the extent of media coverage on sustainability issues. It also highlights the impact of media coverage regarding sustainability topics on the community's awareness regarding sustainability. Moreover, the study finds that the level of community awareness of sustainability mediates the relationship between media sustainability coverage and firm’s adoption of CSR. This study offers both theoretical and practical contributions. On a theoretical level, its aim is to construct a conceptual framework to guide business firms in implementing CSR. From a practical standpoint, it prompts officials to reassess their approach to sustainability-related media coverage and advocate for community education on sustainability as a behaviour influenced by various stakeholders. These behaviours, in turn, affect a firm's decisions and practices related to CSR. Several areas for future research are worth exploring. For instance, future studies could investigate changes that influence the media coverage of sustainability themes and community awareness as independent variables, rather than mediators. Additionally, further research could delve into other variables within stakeholder theory that impact the adoption of social responsibility by the business sector in Dubai

The study also examined the role of the political position of the host country as a mediator in the relationship between the charismatic factors of diplomats and the factors of public relations and diplomatic relations of the United Arab Emirates. The study is a deductive approach that begins with a theory and ends with hypothesis testing. The study is quantitative research using statistical analysis based on descriptive measures and variance and covariance techniques. The study population is all employees working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or embassies of the UAE around the world. 370 questionnaires were distributed to employees working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or embassies of the UAE around the world. The researcher distributed the data through the online questionnaires using "Google Forms" because the potential respondents are in different regions worldwide. Accordingly, this attempt resulted in the return of 312 questionnaires. This gives a response rate of 84%. However, only 278 were used in the Structural Equation Modeling Study - Partial Least Squares Study (PLS) after the data screening process. The study's results revealed a significant impact of the charisma and public relations of diplomats’ factors on diplomatic relations in the United Arab Emirates. The results also showed the mediating role of the political position of the host country as a mediator in the relationship between the charismatic factors of diplomats and the factors of public relations and diplomatic relations of the United Arab Emirates. Implications, suggestions, and limitations for further investigation are also discussed in this analysis. The study presented many recommendations, the most important of which is paying attention to the political position of the host country, which helps diplomats, whether they are inside or outside the United Arab Emirates, to strengthen their decisions and positions

Examining the pre-and post-effects of financial crises on the stock market in Malaysia using wavelet approach

    Get PDF
The fluctuations in stock market prices are a significant cause for concern, both domestically and globally, given the substantial reliance of a country's economy on these market dynamics. In particular, Malaysia's stock market has felt the impacts from numerous global socioeconomic upheavals and crises, making it one of the most affected stock markets in recent years. This study aims to examine the relationship of co-integration of risk and causality between Malaysia's stock market and those of its trading partners, while also elaborating the pivotal role played by the Malaysian government in guiding the nation during key financial upheavals, such as the Asian Financial Crisis (1997-1998), the Global Financial Crisis (2008-2009), and the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021). To achieve these research objectives, this study utilized the wavelet approach, analysing Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) daily indices derived from the DataStream database. Stock markets of selected countries were examined, including Malaysia, China, India, Pakistan, Singapore, Indonesia, UK, USA, Germany, and France. The research findings reveal a noticeable high-frequency co-integration pattern between Malaysia’s stock markets and those of its trading partners during the periods of the crises. Moreover, strong evidence from various methodologies validates the hypothesis that Malaysia has successfully achieved economic integration with its trading partners, including emerging markets and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, across distinctive time horizon. Moreover, this study shows that all Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) are positively correlated with the Malaysian stock market, except for Voice and Accountability. Pertaining to Voice and Accountability, the intervention role of the Malaysian government has a negative impact on the stock market. Additionally, the results of the portfolio analysis suggest that by constructing an effective portfolio for Malaysia, incorporating investments in China, Germany, France, Pakistan, Indonesia, the UK, and Japan, investors can attain favourable risk-adjusted returns in the short run due to stable dynamic condition correlation. Meanwhile, in the long run, Malaysia’s portfolio involving investments in the USA and India is subject to the influence of an unstable dynamic conditional correlation existed between these stock markets. This study argues that the USA serves as strong safe haven and hedge opportunity, while China, France, Germany, Singapore, Pakistan, and the UK act as diversifiers for the Malaysian market during the turmoil period
