Public speaking anxiety and its relationship with attitude and motivation among Jordanian EFL learners

    No full text
This study aimed at identifying the attitudes of Jordanian EFL learners toward English public speaking skills. Secondly, it is intended to identify the motivational level of Jordanian EFL learners and to determine if they have integrative or instrumental motivation toward English public speaking skills. Besides, it aimed to investigate how attitude and motivation affect English public speaking anxiety. Lastly, it aimed to explore how Jordanian EFL learners perceive their English public speaking anxiety. The study employed a mixed-methods research design. Based on non-probability purposive sampling, 191 Jordanian PhD EFL students responded to the questionnaire. Besides, interviews were conducted with six Jordanian PhD EFL students. The findings indicated that the attitude of Jordanian EFL learners towards English public speaking was low. More precisely, the result indicated that most Jordanian EFL learners (PhD students) have a negative attitude toward speaking English in public. Moreover, Jordanian PhD students had a low level of motivation. Besides, it was found that even though the motivation level of students towards English public speaking skills was low, they can be motivated instrumentally. Additionally, attitude and motivation were significantly correlated with English public speaking anxiety, suggesting that English public speaking anxiety among Jordanian EFL learners was negatively affected by their attitude and their level of motivation. Lastly, qualitative findings are consistent with the quantitative findings, supporting the fact that students had a negative attitude and low motivation toward speaking in English in public. The results have many outcomes for EFL teachers and policymakers, all of which may benefit EFL students by increasing their motivation and enhancing their attitude toward speaking English in public, hence reducing their level of anxiety

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of role stressors and burnout on organizational commitment among public servants in Malaysia, mediated by job satisfaction. The results were examined based on the relationship of four independent variables: three multidimensional role stressors (role conflict, role ambiguity and role overload) and burnout; one dependent variable (organizational commitment); and one mediator variable (job satisfaction). The theoretical framework used to execute this research is based on the Social Exchange Theory (SET) and General Systems Theory (GST) with thirteen (13) hypotheses. The purposive sampling technique was used to distribute questionnaires to 385 employees from 25 different departments in Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL). The Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression analyses were used to test the relationship of all variables, while the Sobel test was used to test the mediation effect of job satisfaction on all relationships. The key results indicated that each independent variable has a significant impact on organizational commitment among employees in DBKL. However, surprisingly, no mediating effect was reported between role conflict and job satisfaction, despite the outrageous effect of the Covid-19 pandemic. This study is considered significant since it provides valuable information for Malaysian policy and decision-makers in designing more appropriate and effective Organizational Behavior practices during a worldwide or nationwide crisis such as Covid-19. It will improve employees’ organizational commitment among public servants and help the government improve organizational employment acts, policies, or legislation related to Malaysian public local councils

A legal study of violation of Yazidi women rights in ISIS war: An evaluation of international law and the domestic legal framework of Iraq

    No full text
Historically, women in general have been the victims of armed conflicts in many forms as they are among the most marginalized social classes. Irrespective of age, skin colour, ethnicity and nationality, females have typically been the victims of both international and non-international armed conflicts (IAC and NIAC, respectively). Due to such phenomenon, many laws and legal instruments are put in place to protect civilians in general and women specifically against any kinds of violations in armed conflicts (ACs). However, even with such international regulations and measures in place, there are insufficient assurances that enforce women’s protection in such situations. The objectives of this thesis is to study the violation of women's rights in ACs by using a new and conspicuous approach. In this regard, the thesis focuses on the violations against women from the Yazidi minority in the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) war in Iraq from 2014 to 2023. Accordingly, at the international level, this study seeks to analyse the international legal frameworks for the protection of women’s rights in ACs. Further, through the Yazidi women example, at the local level, the study assesses Iraqi laws and regulations related to the protection or reduction of violations on women's rights in war and ACs with a view to making recommendations for reform. The study collects and analyses its data using library-based research and semi-structured interviews. The study revealed that the existing laws governing the protection of women’s rights against any violence are grossly inadequate. In the international background, the study found inadequacies particularly in the provisions of the branches of international law that claim to prevent the violation of women’s rights in ACs. In the local background, based on the findings, despite the existence of various laws and several attempts to protect women's rights in Iraq, there is still lack of legal protection and security for women. Additionally, there are several legal deficiencies in these laws that protect women’s rights in Iraq. This is a serious concern within the context of Iraq, which is always prone to war and ACs. The study found inadequacies particularly in the provisions of Iraq’s Constitution of 2005, Iraqi Penal Code Law No.111 of 1969, Iraqi Personal Status Code No. 188 of 1959, etc. Therefore, this study recommends a thorough and radical reform and revision of laws and regulations relating to the protection of women's rights in ACs, as well as laws to ensure the decrease of violations of women's rights. Another recommendation of this study is to improve the Iraqi legal framework relating to the protection of women's rights in war focusing on the domestic implementation of international law by the three Iraqi powers which are the executive, legislative, and judiciary

The relationships between festival attachment, memorable festival experience, and revisit intention among Arab tourists towards Jerash Festival in Jordan

    No full text
This study addresses the lack of research on the revisit intentions of Arab tourists attending the annual Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts in Jordan (JFCA), as well as the influencing factors for these intentions. Notably, recent research has shown increased interest in festival attachment and memorable festival experiences as critical factors influencing these intentions. However, both the direct and indirect relationships between festival attachment and revisit intentions are still under investigation. Furthermore, there is a scarcity of studies examining the relationships among all three variables—festival attachment, memorable festival experiences, and revisit intention—as well as the mediating role of memorable festival experiences between festival attachment and revisit intention. In response to these identified gaps, this study aims to investigate the relationships between festival attachment, memorable festival experiences, and revisit intentions among Arab tourists attending JFCA. Additionally, the study explores the mediating role of memorable festival experiences in the relationship between festival attachment and revisit intentions. The theoretical framework of the study was developed based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour, the Theory of Attachment, and the Event Experience Framework. For the above purposes, a quantitative research design using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) through Smart-PLS version 3 was selected as the most appropriate. The data was collected using a systematic random sampling of 580 Arab tourists who attended JFCA on September 20, 2021. Based on the analysis, there is a significant positive relationship between festival attachment, memorable festival experiences, and revisit intention. Additionally, there is a significant indirect relationship between festival attachment and revisit intention through memorable festival experiences as the mediator. Practically, the study paves the way for organisers, planners, managers, and festival marketers to plan, develop, and market effective festival tourism strategies. The information obtained from this study will enhance tourists’ festival attachment and memorable festival experiences, which in turn will attract and retain more visitors for the event industry in the future

    Get PDF
This study objective is to investigate the relationship between auditor characteristics and aggressive tax planning among public listed companies in Malaysia. In this regard, the effect of auditor size, auditor opinion and audit fees on aggressive tax planning was examined. The sample of the study includes 220 listed companies in the Bursa Malaysia. The period of study was three years from 2017 to 2019 whilst firm size, leverage, and return on assets are the control variables used. The results of this research were determined in three hypotheses. The three hypotheses that explore the relationship between auditors’ characteristic with aggressive tax planning were not confirmed. But the results showed a significant relationship between the leverage and return on assets with aggressive tax planning which support Hoffman's tax planning theory where corporations seek to reduce the tax burden by using loans that increase debt burden and reduce profit revenue. Tax authorities should focus more on leverage and return on assets to identify aggressive tax planning, as this study shows a significant relationship between both variables. This study also has limitations, such as using public listed companies in Bursa Malaysia and therefore it is not applicable to other countries' institutional systems. Results are dependent on how accurately the proxies reflect effective tax rates, and the impacts of the auditor's connections with the management of the companies were not examined

Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is a transportation system that was approved in December 2010 and inaugurated in December 2016 by the Malaysian Government with the aim of enhancing public transportation and reducing traffic congestion in the Klang Valley. The effectiveness of MRT operations is influenced by the accuracy and timeliness of services through signaling and communication systems. This study measures the effectiveness of MRT operations on the Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT Line and the Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya MRT Line with the objective of assessing users' perceptions of MRT service quality, analyzing the quality of MRT services to the public, and evaluating the impact of MRT service quality on society. The study employs qualitative methods, obtaining data through in-depth interviews with 10 respondents who have experience in using MRT services, as well as focused group interviews. The findings of the study indicate that users have a positive perception of MRT service quality. They feel safe at stations, on the platforms, and inside the trains. The quality of the MRT system is also regarded positively, with affordable ticket prices, regular schedules, and good punctuality of train arrivals. The MRT system also has a positive impact on the socioeconomic well-being of the community, including improving living standards, boosting property prices, providing economic benefits to local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), stimulating the national construction sector, and benefiting businesses at each station. However, there is still room for improvement that MRT can implement to provide the best service to the public. This includes enhancing the organization's image and mission, promoting integrity, and exploring commercial activities in identified categories of New Technology

Using systematic sampling approaches, the survey includes 333 respondents from the Kuala Perlis fishing villages. In this study, mean analysis, Pearson correlation, and one-way ANOVA were employed as analysis approaches. The study's findings suggest that traditional fishing families in Kuala Perlis possess moderately good self-skills, with a mean value of 1.20. The results of this study answered the research problem statement, which is self-skills significantly affect in a positive manner on the efforts of traditional fishing families in Kuala Perlis in eradicating poverty. Finally, the study showed that differences in location of habitation, the number of family members, the primary occupation of children, and the highest degree of education of the family's head have differentiated their efforts to escape poverty. Religion, ethnicity, children's highest level of education, and different respondents' marital status, on the other hand, make no difference in their efforts to escape poverty. This study has important implications for stakeholders such as the government and fishermen's associations in Kuala Perlis, highlighting that all planning should prioritise value-based programmes and support beyond financial and physical considerations. The fishermen in this study indicate that they require additional assistance in self-skill in the form of soft values in order to continue improving their families' destiny
