Redefining quality interpersonal communication and communication activities in marriage from divorcees’ perspectives
Quality interpersonal communication is essential in the development and maintenance of any relationship, including marriage. As society adapts to new avenues of communication, married couples often underestimate the relevance of interpersonal communication in their relationship due to their lack of understanding of quality interpersonal communication. Therefore, this study investigated the conceptualisation of quality interpersonal communication through the lens of Relational Dialectic Theory and communication activities in marriage from the perspectives of divorcees. This study also explored the antecedents of poor-quality interpersonal communication and its repercussions on married couples. The present study also extended Knapp’s Relational Development Model by incorporating communication technology as a medium of communication. In-depth interviews were conducted on 20 divorcees from different states in Malaysia, chosen through a purposive sampling technique. The gathered data was then evaluated and combined in a thematic data analysis using the NVivo 12 software. This study discovers that the definitions of quality interpersonal communication are divided into seven (7) categories, with communication skills, intimacy, and characters identified as the top three significant traits. Results of this study also indicate that spouses use various medium of communication based on their circumstances but prefer face-to-face communication. However, communication occurrences between spouses are low and mostly negative, with the majority of them mainly involving households and children. The other antecedents of poor-quality interpersonal communication are communication skills, attitudes, third-party involvement, and emotional condition. The current study concludes that emotional condition is one of the protuberant effects of poor-quality interpersonal communication. All in all, the current study provides a new paradigm in Knapp’s Relational Development Model through the incorporation of the effects of poor-quality interpersonal communication into the deterioration stages of the model
Narrative inquiry of language assessment literacy development of pre-service English as a foreign language teacher in China
As an indispensable element in the teaching and learning, assessment not only informs teachers about the effectiveness of the instruction, but also frames student learning. However, pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers across the world have been suggested to possess an inadequate level of language assessment literacy (LAL). The first step is to understand their concerns in LAL. To address the paucity, this narrative inquiry is conducted to explore pre-service EFL teachers’ LAL conceptualizations, self-evaluated proficiency level, evolvement trajectories, and the mediating factors in the evolvement process. Six participants from a pre-service EFL teacher education programme in China were purposefully sampled. The narrative interviews, assessment artifacts, and journals were collected and analyzed by narrative analysis and thematic analysis. The findings showed that the participants conceptualized LAL as a scaled eight-dimensional concept embedded in the social-cultural contexts. They tend to self-evaluate their LAL proficiency ranging from insufficiently qualified, through marginally qualified, to satisfactorily qualified. Besides, the experiential, contextual, and personal mediating factors were identified to participate in LAL evolvement. From bottom-up, the mediating factors participated in constructing pre-service EFL teachers’ knowledge base, shaping their assessment conceptions, filtering the assessment practices, and facilitating the assessor identity construction. With the enhanced LAL, they were more attentive to reflect on the influence of these mediating factors. As to the LAL evolvement trajectory, all the participants went through three mastery levels from the first assessment knowledge base through internalized assessment understanding to assessor identity construction. This study contributes to LAL conceptualization by involving in the neglected stakeholders, pre-service EFL teachers and enriches the application of narrative inquiry in LAL field. The findings can be used as a guidance for the improvement of deficient LAL among pre-service EFL teachers by offering implications for the teacher educators and teacher preparation programmes
Influence of crisis management factors and moderation of technology business analytics on organisational performance of the UAE municipals
The study examined the influence of crisis management strategy, crisis management team, and public relation on the organisational performance in addition to the moderation of technology business analytics in the UAE municipals. The proposed conceptual framework has three factors of crisis management as antecedents of the dependent variable, organisational performance; and one moderating variable, technology business analytics. The study is deductive approach and use quantitative methods to analyze the primary data that collected by the self-directed questionnaire that used Likert-5 polls. Respondents are 365 employees of managerial positions (supervisors, deputy managers, managers, and general managers) in three northern municipals, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Al Fujairah and chosen based on quota sampling technique. Results revealed that the proposed conceptual framework can explain 32.7 % of the organizational performance. Overall, the model is significant with F (3,302) = 50.314 and the three direct relationships are in significant level at 5%. The precedence of the three antecedents is crisis management strategy (0.372), crisis management team (0.220), and public relation (0.205). The moderating influence of technology business analytics shows no significant effect related to crisis management team, significant effect related to crisis management strategy with change of 0.2419, and significant effect related to public relation with change of 0.1226. Overall, five hypothesis is accepted among the six proposed relationships. The results contribute to the UAE municipals by revealing the importance of crisis management on the performance of the municipals and contribute to the academic knowledge by adding empirical results from the UAE. Future work can focus in examining more antecedents from the crisis management domain to increase the explanation power of the conceptual framework

The hotel owners’ and top managements’ behavioural intention: The adoption of islamic quality standard for hotels
Islamic hotel development is reported as one of the attractive segments in Malaysia's tourism development nowadays. However, most of the hotel operators claimed that they are confused with the standard of the Islamic Hotel concept and there is still a lack of studies on the hotel operators’ opinions and attitudes towards the Islamic hotel concept and its standard. With the emergence of the Islamic Quality Standard for Hotels (IQS for Hotels), there are possibilities for the owners and top management to adopt the standard. This study aims to examine the relationship between attitude towards behaviour, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and behavioural intention to adopt IQS for Hotels using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). This study also examines the role of religion and the length of working experience as the moderating variable. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are used to investigate the relationship between three considerations in TPB in relation to the owners and top management’s behavioural intention to adopt IQS for Hotels. Interview protocol and questionnaires were used to obtain data from 87 owners and the top management. This study found that all three independent variables significantly influence the hotel owners’ and the top management’s intention to adopt IQS for Hotels. This study found that the three variables significantly influence the intention of hotel owners and top management to accept the use of IQS for hotels. Other important parties such as friends and family who are important to the owners and top management also help them to decide the adoption of IQS for Hotels at their respective organizations. Religion and length of working experience have been reported to be insignificant moderators because as a profit-oriented organization, business objectives are the most important factor to be considered. Academically, this study contributes to knowledge regarding the owners and top management’s behavioural intention to adopt the policy, standards and practices of IQS for Hotels. In addition, it also provides knowledge about Islamic hotel standards to the hotel operators
The Zeitgeist of “Financial Reporting Quality” predictors: an empirical study among local governments (districts) in Sumatera Island, Indonesia
The results of the audit of local governments (district) in Sumatra Island found noncompliance with statutory provisions, including potential losses, absence of receipts, administrative irregularities, inefficiency and ineffectiveness, lack of accounting competence which causes regional wealth management to be inappropriate. This has resulted in losses to the state and district. Weak control systems also lead to errors in financial reporting. This research was conducted to determine the factors that influence financial reporting quality. Financial reports have an important role in the formulation of development policies. This research applied the quantitative method as the main research design of the study. The data was collected via a survey approach, with a self-administered questionnaire as the platform to gather all the required information The population of the study comprehends the local governments in Sumatra Island with the sample respondents consisting of the head of accounting as well as senior and junior accounting officers who are responsible for managing finances. The study population consisted of 120 local governments, while the sample of respondents was 302 people. Applying judgmental sampling as the sampling technique, a total of 377 questionnaires were distributed with 322 questionnaires were returned. Through a proper screening and treatment with SPSS v26, 302 valid questionnaires were identified. The Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) technique was employed for data analysis. The results of the study showed that internal factors are positively influenced financial reporting quality, accounting staff competency is not significant on the financial reporting quality, commitment to the organization fails to moderate internal factors, and transparency has a significant mediating effect on external factors. Eventually, this study has proposed practical recommendations on how to organize, motivate and inspire local governments to improve the financial reporting quality. Local governments should comply with existing policies, plans, procedures, laws, and regulations in force. Central governments should play the role to review activities and programs in the administration of local governments, ascertain whether the results achieved are consistent with the goals and objectives, and provide trainings to employees in order to produce better quality financial reports in the local governments
The impact of shariah compliance on the financial performance of Malaysian Islamic banks: Moderating effect of Shariah Committee
The positioning of Islamic banks as economic or social entities has been prominently debated on a global scale as Islamic bank social practices are still being neglected following their current emphasis on financial performance. Hence, this study investigates the relationship between Shariah compliance and the financial performance of Malaysian Islamic banks, as well as the moderating effect of the effectiveness of the Shariah Committee. Six Shariah compliance indicators represent the independent variables of the study. Meanwhile, the study's dependent variable is financial performance proxied by Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE). The study uses panel data analysis, whereby the annual reports of 16 Islamic banks in Malaysia were analysed over ten years from 2010 to 2019. Panel regression models consisting of random and fixed effects are incorporated for data evaluation. The study's findings show a significant influence of Shariah-compliant financing, Zakat, advertising and operational efficiency on financial performance represented by ROA. At the same time, the ROE model reports a significant influence of Zakat, advertising, non-performing financing and operational efficiency on the ROE of the banks. In addition, the effectiveness of the Shariah Committee moderates the influence of Shariah-compliant financing, Zakat, advertising, household financing and operational efficiency on the ROA of the banks. Further, the findings reveal that the Shariah Committee can moderate the influence of Zakat, advertising, non-performing financing and operational efficiency on the ROE of the banks. The study outcomes offer pivotal insights into effective Shariah committee roles in Malaysia, especially for the Shariah Advisory Council (SAC) of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to implicitly optimise Islamic bank financial performance
Framework of Islamic sustainable and responsible investment based on environment, social and governance concept
Sustainable and responsible investment (SRI) and environment, social, and governance (ESG) are two concepts which, presently are frequently being discussed, especially in the investment sector. The United Nations developed both concepts - Principles for Responsible Investment (UN-PRI) to create better practices in managing investment funds. Thus, this study attempts to explore these two concepts and analyses their criteria from Shariah perspectives. This research aims to answer four main objectives, which are; to examine the concept of SRI and its relationship with ESG and sustainable development goals (SDG), to explore the current scenario and existing practices of SRI issuance, to determine the criteria of Islamic SRI based on the ESG concept and to develop Islamic SRI framework and its components as a regulation or guidance to the industry. This study applied a qualitative method comprising document analysis and expert interviews. The study found that there were significant differences between SDGs, ESGs and SRIs concepts, especially in terms of aims, scopes, year of establishment and their principles. Besides clarifying three ASEAN standards and two local guidelines, the study confirmed the theory of stakeholders as the main theory applied in expanding the ESG and SRI development whereby the governments of ASEAN countries collectively agreed to develop ASEAN standards that govern the current SRI practices. This study also analysed the issuance of four projects under those standards and guidelines, in which two issuances were at the ASEAN level, and the other two were at the local level. This study found that some of the existing criteria of ESG, such as human rights, freedom of censorship, freedom of association and freedom of expression, are not per Islamic teachings and are not suitable to be matched with Islamic ESG criteria. Therefore, this study contributes an Islamic SRI framework as a new regulated framework or as a new guidance to the industry
Keberkesanan PDRM dalam menangani penyalahgunaan ketum di kalangan masyarakat: kajian kes di kawasan Padang Besar, Perlis
The use of ketum leaves has been abused by mixing certain
ingredients in ketum decoction. The boiled water is able to have an imaginary effect like a drug. Accordingly, ketum has been declared a banned substance since January 2003. The state of Kedah emerged as the largest supplier of ketum in the country with an area of ketum cultivation exceeding 32 hectares and generating a sales value of more than RM1 million per month. The widespread ketum cultivation activities in the state increase the risk of ketum consumption among teenagers or youths. Continuous intake of ketum water can lead to drug addiction. Ketum intake is based on certain reasons. Among them are as an energy or physical strength drink, available easily and at low
prices, an alternative to drugs, recreational and social and medical purposes. Ketum leaves are in high demand from neighboring countries such as Thailand. This makes it difficult to combat the problem of smuggling of ketum leaves coupled with the absence
of an act to prevent ketum trees from being planted. Personal interviews or group discussions are appropriate for detailed information and comprehensive insights. This study has explored the practice of using ketum leaves among the community around Padang Besar, Perlis. This study has explained the reasons why youths practice ketum
water and provide input to aid professions such as social workers, counselors, officers of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and related agencies in designing and implementing appropriate interventions and prevention programs. from entering the country. This strategy emphasizes on efforts to strengthen the enforcement measures to prevent the entry and supply of drugs by land, sea and air.
