    Get PDF
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are minimally aware of the importance of insurance policies to protect business continuity. Despite the growing interest in Takaful, there are limited empirical studies on the adoption of Takaful in the manufacturing industry of SMEs. This study examines the relationship between awareness, perception, company size and degree of centralization on the adoption of Takaful in the manufacturing industry of SMEs in Malaysia. A quantitative approach was used for the study. A total of 179 usable questionnaires from SME owners and managers across Malaysia were analyzed using binary logistic regression and cross tabulation via Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. The results show that awareness has a significant impact on the adoption of Takaful in the manufacturing industry of SMEs in Malaysia. Consumers who are aware of Takaful are more likely to purchase insurance plans or schemes than less informed customers. The perception and degree of centralization also influence the adoption of Takaful in the manufacturing industry of SMEs in Malaysia. Centralized decisions (at the top management level) facilitate the adoption of takaful compared to decentralized decisions (at multiple management levels) that involve different stakeholders. Decentralized decisions may not lead to favorable outcomes. Organizational policymakers should use effective information communication strategies to create a positive perception and increase the acceptance of Takaful. In terms of theoretical contribution, this study applies Theory of Reasoned Action and Organizational Buying as underlying theories and found significant relationships between awareness, perception, degree of centralization and adoption of Takaful in the manufacturing industry of SMEs in Malaysi

A study on consumer protection against unfair terms in the personal loan contract of Iraqi banks

    Get PDF
The protection of consumers should be the priority of banks in the rendering of their services. The personal loan contract is unfair to the consumer as it entails a standard contract the bank provides. This problem is on the rise consistent with the growing demand for fast loans. To address this issue in Iraq, the government has enacted the Consumer Protection Law 2010 to complement the Iraqi Civil Code 1951. The legal framework is questionable as to whether it protects unfair terms in the standard loan contract. Furthermore, the Central Bank of Iraq has issued guidelines to banks requiring them to be more transparent when dealing with consumers. Unfortunately, several issues have been identified that negatively affect these laws and regulations thus making them unable to protect the borrowers as well as to provide them with a suitable remedy. This research hence aims to examine the consumer protection measures taken against unfair terms in the United Kingdom’s laws and to analyze the Iraqi laws governing unfair terms of bank loan contracts. Further, it examines Iraq’s institutional role that supports and implements the consumer protection framework and compares the institutional and legal mechanisms of Iraq with that of the UK to learn from their experience. This study, employing a qualitative approach, uses the semi-structured interview method to generate data from banks, legal academics, lawyers, judges, and consumers. It also performs doctrinal legal research to support the findings. This study found that the UK adopts the good faith principle, enhanced transparency, fairness, and efficiency in contracting and is proposed as a foundation for the institutional and legal system. This research uncovered a severe deficiency in the Iraqi legislation framework which is limited to what is known as contract adhesion. This study recommends that Iraqi laws need to be amended according to the UK model to provide comprehensive consumer protection. The Iraqi authority should consider the Iraqi institutions’ role in coordinating with each other and offering solutions to these issues. The suggestions need to be taken seriously by the Iraqi authority to protect consumers from unfair terms in personal loan contracts

Start-ups are pivotal to fostering economic development, generating employment, nurturing eco-innovation, and pioneering new markets. Their contributions are especially vital in emerging economies, such as those in the African continent. However, start-ups face significant challenges in their quest for sustainability and survival, with failure rates alarmingly high, ranging from 50% to 95%. Using Hargeisa Somaliland, a developing region where start-ups grapple with many obstacles, this study endeavours to shed light on the efficacy of their support systems. Therefore, it is crucial to recognise the need to assess the critical support services that enable Start-up success. This thesis attempts to determine which startup- related essential support services, such as technology, market, finance, and soft support, contribute the most to its success. Primary data were collected from 123 respondents to the distributed questionnaire for 200 newly registered start-ups in the last five years engaged in Electronics, Boutiques/clothes shop/tailoring, Transport, Supermarket and Retail shops through structured questionnaires using stratified random sampling techniques. This study aims to underscore the significance of technology, finance, and soft support in the success of start-ups, while market-related support did not have a significant impact. The study's result shows a significant negative relationship between the variables understudies in this research. These insights not only build upon existing literature by elucidating the role of these supports in propelling start-up success. However, it also shows how each type of support does not contribute to the Start-up's success in the specific context of Somalilan

Mental health is a growing occupational and public health issue among Nigerian farmers, particularly in north-central Nigeria, where external risk factors like herderfarmer conflict and climate change significantly impact the mental well-being of rural farmers. Despite their key role in the agricultural economy, these farmers are often disregarded in mental health research, which has mostly concentrated on formal job sectors. This neglect can lead to reduced agricultural productivity and negatively affecting the national economy. Consequently, this study aims to document how these factors impact the overall mental well-being of rural farmers in north-central Nigeria. The proposed theoretical framework is based on self-determination theory, focusing on autonomy, competence, and relatedness. To objectively examine this idea, 351 rural farmers completed a structured survey and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was utilized to conduct the analysis. Furthermore, the findings shows that climate change and herder-farmer conflicts have a significant negative impact on mental health, while pesticide exposure has no significant effect. The study suggests integrating mental health care into agricultural extension services to improve outcomes for the agricultural industr
