    Get PDF
In Islam, the group of muallaf is eligible to receive zakat. The difference in the definition of muallaf can affect any matter related to the distribution of zakat, whether non-Muslims (muallafah qulubuhum) who have a tendency towards Islam are entitled to receive zakat or not. This paper will analyze the distribution of zakat to non-Muslims (muallafah qulubuhum) in Perlis. Based on interviews with experts from the Mufti Department of Perlis, the Council of Islamic Religion and Malay Customs of Perlis (MAIPs), and Perlis Centre of Wisdom (PCW), this study examines the decisions and views that allow the giving of zakat to non-Muslims under the category of 'muallafah qulubuhum' (those who want to tame their hearts to Islam). Researcher also conducted interviews with muallaf and non-Muslims (muallafah qulubuhum). The 26th Perlis State Fatwa Committee Meeting in 2017 issued the fatwa, which supports this decision with evidence from the Quran and hadith. The research methodology uses a qualitative approach, which combines data collection methods through face-to-face interviews and written responses from key expert informants. Content analysis was done to identify the main themes, such as the purpose of giving zakat, the method of giving zakat, and the implications of zakat to muallaf and non-Muslims (muallafah qulubuhum) in Perlis. The study's findings show that giving zakat to non-Muslims (muallafah qulubuhum) can introduce the beauty and harmony of Islam, as well as educate the Muslim community about the breadth and purity of Islam in a practical context. This finding also confirms that giving zakat to non-Muslims (muallafah qulubuhum) needs to be done carefully, meet certain conditions, and ensure a fair distribution to avoid misunderstandings among the community. Finally, giving zakat to non-Muslims (muallafah qulubuhum) in Perlis not only serves as an effective preaching medium, but it also strengthens social relations and harmony between religions

Islamic banking in Somalia has recorded tremendous development and growth in the last two decades. However, the level of financing growth of Islamic banks has experienced a decline in recent years due to several factors, probably due to the customer awareness gap. Several studies have been conducted on the issues of customers’ awareness towards Islamic banking in some Islamic countries, and most of the literature focused on the acceptance towards Islamic banking products, with less attention given to awareness of Islamic banking services, especially in Somalia country. This study has been conducted to examine the relationship between attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, perception, and awareness of Islamic banking products by using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). 132 completed questionnaires were returned that measured the respondents’ awareness toward Islamic banking services; the findings of the study show that all four factors, namely, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, and perception, were found to be positively and significantly related to awareness of Islamic banking services. Attitude was found to be the most important factor influencing awareness towards Islamic banking services in Somalia. In general, the current study shows evidence that the Theory of Planned Behavior is applicable in measuring the awareness of Islamic banking services. The findings of this study can be useful for Islamic banking authorities and policymakers in making strategies to increase the demand for Islamic banking product

Determinants of Malaysian Islamic bank deposits performance

    Get PDF
The lower-than-targeted growth rate in Malaysia’s Islamic banking sector is raising concerns. Islamic banking assets account for only 36.3% of total banking assets, missing the Malaysian government's 2022 target of 40%. Furthermore, Islamic deposits and investment accounts comprised only 41.6% of total bank deposits and savings. The issue is further exacerbated by rapid fluctuations in the growth rate of Islamic bank deposits. Despite these challenges, factors affecting Islamic bank deposits have not been comprehensively studied. Therefore, this research aims to examine the effect of bank-specific factors, macroeconomic factors, and regulatory factors on the performance of Islamic bank deposits. Additionally, business enterprise depositors are measured as a moderating variable in this study. This study employs quantitative approach using secondary data from 16 Islamic banks between 2000 and 2021. The data were collected from Islamic banks’ annual reports, Bank Negara Malaysia, World Bank, Department of Statistics Malaysia, and other specified sources. The data were analyze using panel data regressions. The results indicate that performance of Islamic bank deposits is significantly impacted by bank-specific factors (net profit margin, bank concentration, financing-to-deposit ratio, and bank size) and macroeconomic factors (gross domestic product and inflation). Additionally, the moderating variable of business enterprise depositors only strengthens the relationship between the net profit margin and the performance of Islamic bank deposits. Overall, the findings suggest that bank-specific factors have a more substantial impact on the performance of Islamic bank deposits than macroeconomic and regulatory factors. Therefore, Islamic banks should prioritize bank-specific factors determinants to ensure stability. The efforts shall be performed while also taking macroeconomic factors into meticulous consideration

Modification Of Dal Distribution: A Comparative Analysis Of Burr Xii-Dal And Weibull-Dal Distributions

    Get PDF
Classical distributions such as Burr-G and Weibull-G distributions with less than four parameters are commonly used to represent lifetime data, frequently prove insufficient in accurately describing real observations. These distributions often struggle to capture the complexities and nuances present in the data, leading to inaccuracies in modeling and analysis. Hence, this study introduces two new lifetime models based on the aforementioned distributions to address these issues. These models, called BurrXIIDAL and Weibull-DAL, are based on the properties of the DAL distribution, and have five parameters. Statistical analyses are conducted on these models, including examining their reliability properties and density expansion. Their ordinary and incomplete moments, moment generating function, quantile function, probability weighted moments, order statistics, and Renyi entropy have all been derived explicitly. Maximum likelihood technique is used to provide estimates for the model’s parameter using Iterative Broyden-Flether-Goldfrab-Shanno method in the R-package. Then, five actual datasets are used to demonstrate the ability of the BurrXII-DAL and Weibull- DAL models. Various measures of goodness-of-fit, including AIC, BIC, A*, W* and p-value (KS) are used. Both models, BurrXII-DAL and Weibull-DAL distributions performed better as they are flexible fit to the real data as compared to the other competitive models. The models are proven effective since the prediction of the failure rate is more accurate and the hazard rate function shows flexibility with complicated scenario. BurrXII-DAL and Weibull-DAL distributions with five parameters are successfully developed in this study. This research has provided insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each distribution and has identified situations where one distribution may be more appropriate than the other

    Get PDF
Malaysian students are found to be weak in both English language proficiency and higher order thinking skills which are crucial for any nation to thrive in the global market. They, not only rank below the OECD average in Mathematics, Reading and Science but are found to be struggling in higher order thinking skills in international assessments such as TIMSS and PISA. Past studies purport that the EL teachers’ incompetence in both these areas to be the main cause for this predicament. This study attempts to identify strategies to overcome this problem by investigating the EL teachers’ knowledge, perception, practices and challenges in relation to the teaching of analytical thinking skills. The methodology includes quantitative and qualitative methods. A questionnaire, classroom observation and teacher interview were used to collect data. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The study found that all the 132 participants had sound knowledge of analytical thinking skills and held positive perception towards teaching them in the ESL reading class. The study found significant correlations between teachers’ knowledge and their classroom practices at 0.05 level, and between teacher perception and teachers’ classroom practices at 0.01 level. The usage of a standard lesson plan, questioning techniques, group/collaborative activities and task-based activities emerged as major themes that enhanced the teaching of analytical thinking skills in the ESL reading class. The post-observation interviews showed that the reading-text, comprehension questions, and teaching activities in the text book were ineffective to teach analytical thinking skills. Gathering relevant teaching materials and the students’ poor English language proficiency were identified as the biggest challenges for these teachers. Based on the findings, a framework of guidelines is proposed for the EL teachers to use as a reference when integrating analytical thinking skills in their ESL reading class
