Managerial coaching and coachability as predictors of employee work performance: the mediating role of self-efficacy

    Get PDF
Organizations increasingly incorporate managerial coaching into their leadership development programs to achieve higher organizational performance. However, investments in training their managers to become effective coaches have not always yielded the expected results. While extant literature heavily emphasizes coaching skills and competencies, limited research has been conducted on the linkages between coaching and other psychological factors; such as employee coachability or self-efficacy, in producing enhanced work performance. This research investigates the influence of managerial coaching and coachability on work performance and the role of self-efficacy in mediating these relationships. Employing a quantitative methodology, a survey was administered to 383 employees of a food manufacturing company in Malaysia. The data was analysed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The results reveal that managerial coaching and coachability significantly and positively influence work performance, with coachability demonstrating a more substantial impact than managerial coaching. Furthermore, self-efficacy mediates these relationships, underscoring its crucial role in the coaching process. Specifically, self-efficacy exhibits a more robust mediating effect on the relationship between managerial coaching and work performance compared to its influence on the relationship between coachability and work performance. Employers and employees should actively adopt and promote managerial coaching practices in the workplace to drive higher work performance. Additionally, they should demonstrate high coachability and optimize the critical factor of employee self-efficacy to enhance work performance. Theoretically, this study's proposed research framework is firmly grounded in Goal Setting Theory, demonstrating its applicability in the Malaysian food manufacturing sector. The framework effectively illustrates the interrelationships between managerial coaching, employee coachability, and self-efficacy in driving enhanced work performance

The topic of the role of Islamic work ethics in improving knowledge sharing among academic library staff in Malaysia is increasingly important in the study of knowledge management and human resources. Based on moral principles and Islamic religious values, this work ethic influences the attitude and behavior of employees, thereby improving the quality of knowledge sharing in the workplace. Academic libraries play an important role in supporting university curriculum and research. In the era of globalization and communication technology, library information demand is increasing, making knowledge sharing critical to organizational performance. However, obstacles include less open individual attitudes, unsupportive organizational culture, and a lack of worker trust. This research examines several factors that influence knowledge-sharing behavior, including personality traits, authentic leadership, information and communication technology, and Islamic work ethics as moderating factors. Integrating Islamic work ethics with sincerity, justice, trustworthiness, and diligence principles can foster a collaborative and integrity-driven work culture. This study uses a quantitative approach through an online survey of academic library staff in Malaysia, involving 176 respondents who were analyzed using SPSS and Partial Least Square (PLS-SEM) SmartPLS software. The findings show a positive relationship between personality traits, authentic leadership, communication and information technology, Islamic work ethics, and knowledge-sharing behavior. Practically, this study provides insights for organizations to increase knowledge-sharing activities by focusing on the Islamic context in Malaysia. In theory, Islamic work ethics increase the positive effects of personality traits and ICT on knowledge sharing by emphasizing honesty, trust, and responsibility. Despite this, this study acknowledges its weaknesses, such as the use of a small sample size and methodological limitations. Further research with larger and more diverse samples and mixed approaches is suggested to deepen understanding across multiple organizational contexts

The Malaysian palm oil market, a crucial component of the global edible oils industry, experiences significant price volatility, particularly in crude palm kernel oil (CPKO). This volatility presents substantial challenges for market participants in managing financial risks. This study examines the relationship between CPO's futures price and the hedging effectiveness of CPKO's spot price. It also investigates the relationship between unhedged and hedged portfolios and assesses the hedging effectiveness of FCPO contracts in mitigating CPKO price volatility. Advanced econometric techniques, including regression analysis, GARCH models, and time series analysis, were applied to a comprehensive dataset of daily CPKO spot prices and FCPO contracts from January 2010 to June 2022. This 12-year period provides a detailed examination of long-term market dynamics and price fluctuations in the Malaysian palm oil industry. The findings indicate a significant positive impact between FCPO and CPKO prices using the Naive 1-to-1 approach. The GARCH 1:1 model demonstrates enhanced risk reduction through time-adjusted hedge ratios. However, the Optimal Hedge Ratio (OHR) calculation reveals the complexities of using FCPO futures for hedging CPKO, as evidenced by a negative OHR. These results contribute significantly to hedging theory, particularly in emerging markets, by validating the application of regression and time series models in understanding the dynamics between spot and futures prices within the palm oil industry. Traders, producers, and policymakers for Crude palm kernel oil should emphasize the need for adaptable and effective hedging strategies to manage price risks within the palm oil industry. FCPO contracts may help stabilize price fluctuations, offering stability and predictability for the palm oil industry. Continuous adaptation and refinement of hedging strategies are essential for effectively mitigating risk

This study discussed about the implementation of foreign arbitration rulings in the United Arab Emirates in accordance with the UAE Federal Arbitration Law No. (6) of 2018, which regulates the procedures and methods that must be followed in accordance with the UAE Arbitration Law, especially with regard to public order, in addition to the 1958 New York Convention regarding the implementation of foreign arbitrators’ judgments. This study adopted a qualitative methodology through the comparative analytical descriptive method by extrapolating and analysing the rules and texts of Federal Law No. (6) of 2018 regarding arbitration. This study aimed to clarify the nature of foreign arbitration rulings, the procedures followed in implementing these rulings and their methods, as well as the extent to which they are recognized within the United Arab Emirates. The problem of the study was the absence of a clear law regarding the implementation or non-implementation of the judgments of foreign arbitrators, and consequently the lack of recognition of these provisions, which reflects negatively on investment in the country for fear of not implementing these provisions for the benefit of these investors. The results of this study showed that arbitration has become the preferred method for resolving international trade disputes, but the UAE legislator did not clearly and explicitly indicate the ways to implement the foreign arbitration award in the UAE Federal Arbitration Law No. (6) of 2018 through independent procedural rules that are carefully exposed to show how to implement the arbitration award on the foreigner in the arbitration system. The study recommended that the UAE legislator should organize arbitration rules and set comprehensive rules for everything related to the methods of implementing a foreign arbitration ruling in the UAE Federal Arbitration Law No. (6) of 2018, in line with the development taking place in the world. Moreover, this study recommended setting up an arbitration system that is not limited to local arbitration rulings, but also includes foreign arbitration rulings and the necessity of recognizing them

    No full text
The present study investigated the elements of transformational leadership (TL) and spiritual leadership (SL) in Imran Khan’s (hereafter, IK) speeches, specifically those he delivered at various international forums. The present study’s first aim was to determine the elements of TL and SL deducing from the theories. The second aim was to examine the elements of TL and SL, employing them in the communication of IK through content analysis of his speeches. After that, the third aim was to develop an SL communication model that may provide a guideline for future research on Muslim leadership communication at international forums (i.e., on other leaders from Muslim states). This qualitative study examined textual data trustworthiness using directed (deductive) qualitative content analysis (QCA). Notta premium was used to transcribe IK speeches (2008-2022) for directed QCA. The present study operationalised the directed QCA method by adapting and modifying it from the directed QCA approach developed by Assarroudi et al. (2018) and Kibiswa (2019). This adaptation/modification involved dividing the method into four distinct phases: sample design, data collection process, specifying the unit of analysis, and data analysis process. IK communicated differently in international forums than previous Pakistani leaders at international forums. IK employed religious references in his talks to influence his local and international followers, like other Pakistani political and religious leaders. TL and SL were conceptualised in this study; meanwhile, the findings found that basic elements of SL communication seemed present in his communication. However, IK primarily cited Islam and Islamic history in his communication with Islamic principles, knowing that the audience values a spiritual leader who speaks about religious teachings alongside political communication and understands the importance of religious spirituality. Hence, his SL communication may inspire local trust and optimism. However, he may mislead international audiences by incorporating religion into political speech. IK regularly used local spiritual elements in his communication to appeal to Pakistani/international followers’ religious beliefs. For the theoretical and practical contribution, the present study adds a novel approach for integration amongst three subfields of political communication: TL communication, SL communication, and religious SL communication that also reflects a Muslim socio-political perspective specifically in the context of political-cum-religious settings of Pakista

Framework for mining XML format business process log data

    No full text
With the advent of the Internet, there is a dramatic increase in the volume of semi-structured and unstructured data. Therefore, a lot of frequent subtree mining (FSM) algorithms and methods were developed to get information from semi-structured data specifically data with hierarchical nature. However, many existing FSM algorithms and methods often neglect or fail to preserve structural information, which hinders extracting meaningful insights from such data. Besides, statistical analysis and data mining techniques are difficult to be applied in eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format documents. This study introduces an alternative approach for mining XML format documents which can be modelled into tree-structured format. The Flatten Sequential Structure Model (FSSM) was developed to transform tree-structured data into structured, preserving its structural integrity, thus facilitating comprehensive statistical analysis and data mining. FSSM was divided into two phases. The first phase converted tree structure data into flat structure with the structural information. The second phase converted the first phase data into structured format. After that, statistical analysis or classification were conducted. The effectiveness of the methods and framework was assessed by applying them to both simulation datasets and real-life event logs, namely the Business Process Intelligence Challenge (BPIC). After applying FSSM phases to simulation and real-life event log data, descriptive statistics, t-tests, and chi-square tests were successfully executed. Association rules revealed that they outnumbered those from existing FSM methods. The Random Forest model outperformed others with a classification accuracy of 0.75 for simulation data, while the decision tree achieved the highest accuracy (0.7474) in the BPIC 2017 dataset. In the BPIC 2018 dataset, all three models performed well, exceeding 0.99 in classification accuracy. The results indicate that by transforming complex hierarchical data into a format suitable for statistical analysis, the analysis process is simplified and made more accessible to researchers in various fields
