    Get PDF

The current global health, social, and economic challenges have further complicated the already affected labour market changes due to technological advancements. These challenges affect adolescents in residential care who must not only navigate the aftermath of traumatic experiences but also be contend with career marginalisation. The impact of trauma extends to multiple domains, including self-efficacy, personality traits, and vocational interests, in nuanced ways that remain underexplored. Regrettably, mental health and career counselling are often addressed in isolation. Thus, the primary objective of this study is to address these gaps and examine the difficulties of career decision-making self-efficacy among adolescents in residential care who have been exposed to traumatic experiences. The myriad of pressures stemming from traumatic events, challenges during adolescence, and the demands of employment could contribute to career choice uncertainty. This research integrates three pivotal career counselling variables-self-efficacy, personality traits, and vocational interests-into a comprehensive model that examining the antecedent of this career counselling variables on career decision-making self-efficacy among adolescents in residential care. Additionally, perceived social supports are postulated as mediators in this model. To prove the research model, a survey involving 246 adolescents across five residential care facilities for adolescents was conducted. The result of PLS-SEM model indicated that 50.4% ofadolescents' career decision-making self-efficacy can be explained. Key findings highlight the substantial influence of adolescents' career decision-making was self-efficacy and two personality traits, which are openness and neuroticism. In contrast, other factors, including the mediating element, were revealed to have insignificant impacts on the career decision-making self-efficacy of adolescents in residential care. This study offers a comprehensive perspective on the career decision-making process among such adolescents by outlining the factors that precede their career decision-making self-efficacy. The developed model contributes to enhancing awareness of the factors influencing adolescents' needs in career decision-making process. These factors should be recognised when providing support to adolescents in shaping their future career wellbeing

    Get PDF
Road crashes represent a significant global issue, particularly in Malaysia, affecting drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and daily commuters. Road crashes are significantly influenced by subjective risks, such as human error, that are external or environmental in nature. These incidents are significantly influenced by human error, which includes driving behaviours such as reckless driving. The costs of medical care are a significant financial burden on the victims and their families, in addition to the suffering that road crashes inflict. Despite these efforts, the incidence of road crashes remains high. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess preferences for operant conditioning instructional methods in road safety education (RSE), including campaigns, health education, social media, and virtual reality (VR). The study focused on 204 respondents in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, investigating road users’ behaviors and safety knowledge. Quantitative methods were employed for data collection and numerical analysis using closed-ended questionnaires. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 29 was used for this study. These findings indicate a positive association between health education and VR, with preferences for instructional methods for road safety education. The data analysis shows that respondents agreed VR can help them in road safety education, as it helps people by allowing them to learn and replicate real-life scenarios, for example, by using video games. In addition, health education also shows a significant relationship with operant conditioning as it enhances people's knowledge regarding the importance of health and road safety. However, these results showed a negative relationship between road users' preferences for instructional methods for road safety education between campaigns and social media. This study suggest that these instructional methods could effectively reduce road crashes and promote safer behaviors among road users

A set covering model of recycling bins allocation in university campus

    Get PDF
Recycling systems can be defined as the processes involved in collecting recyclable waste and remanufacturing it into new products. Since the 1970s, the Malaysian government has been committed to improve this system through various ongoing efforts and initiatives. However, there has been insufficient support and engagement from the public, resulting the majority of recyclable waste ending up in landfills. Past research indicates that providing an optimal number of recycling bins at strategic locations, could enhance public support and engagement. This study aims to optimize the number of recycling bins in a university campus, specifically Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). Integer programming model of a set covering problem is employed to address the problem. This study considers three distance coverage options for recycling bin placement which are 100, 250, and 500 meters, involving a total of 105 locations in UUM. The optimal solution shows that 68 recycling bins are needed to cover all locations within 100 meters walking distance. For the distance of 250 meters needs 41 recycling bins while 500 meters requires 24 recycling bins. The proposed solutions may assist UUM management in providing an adequate number of recycling bins in UUM. In addition, the developed model can be applied to other university campus in optimizing the number of recycling bins. Providing a sufficient number of recycling bins across campus will make it more convenient for the university community to access them. This accessibility can encourage the practice of the 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle) among university community, fostering a more sustainable campus environment
