Exploring the skill sets of career changers from engineering to non-engineering careers

    Get PDF
One of the major issues plaguing the engineering landscape in Malaysia is the loss of the talent pool due to engineers voluntarily exiting the profession altogether to pursue a career in other non-engineering fields. While previous studies focused mainly on the factors that contributed to their decision to change careers, there is limited knowledge that examined the applicability of engineering skills in non-engineering fields. Taking an inductive approach, the objective of this study was two-fold: identify the skills that career changers leverage from engineering to a non-engineering career, and examine the application of the leveraged engineering skills in a non-engineering career. This study embarked on a qualitative inquiry approach using the Gioia Methodology. Semi-structured interviews were deployed as the primary data collection method and complemented by observation activities. The fieldwork involved interviewing twenty respondents selected using the purposive sampling method. Based on the data structured process of analysis, the study identified five key skills that are relevant and useful, namely data analysis skills, problem-solving skills, process analysis skills, communication skills, and technical skills. A framework was developed to demonstrate the skills and their respective elements that engineers leverage from the engineering to the non-engineering profession. The framework can be integrated with the existing MEES framework to give a holistic view of the different skills required to excel in engineering and outside engineering. In addition, the study developed a matrix of a likelihood that depicts the type of skills in a career change process. The matrix could be an initial guide to engineers (or related stakeholders) in understanding the engineering skills and their applicability in other fields. The skills and their respective elements identified in the current study can be viewed as an advancement of knowledge in employability

Recently, high-performance organisations have played a crucial role in corporate business operational and financial sustainability. Previous studies revealed that superior organisational performance reflected the organisational high-performance work environment and workers' creative behaviour. Based on the resource-based view (RBV) and the social exchange theory (SET), this study aims to examine the role of a high-performance work environment, i.e. high-performance work system and high-performance organisational culture and employees' innovative work behaviour in a high-performance organisation. Furthermore, this study also assessed the role of collective organisational engagement as mediating variable in the relationship between the related variables. An online survey method was applied for data collection, which involved 206 managers of software development firms in Pakistan. Factor Analysis and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) were applied to analyze the data. PLS path modelling results revealed significant positive direct relationships between high-performance organisational culture, collective organisational engagement, and high-performance organisation. Similarly, PLS-SEM showed significant positive direct relationships between high-performance work system, innovative work behaviour, and collective organisational engagement. However, an insignificant relationship was found between a high-performance work system, innovative work behaviour, and a high-performance organisation. Furthermore, the analysis also revealed that collective organisational engagement mediated the relationships between high-performance work system, innovative work behaviour, and high-performance organisation. In contrast, the study did not find any mediation effect of collective organisational engagement between high-performance organisational culture and high-performance organisational relationships. The findings also revealed that a high-performance work environment and employees' innovative behaviour were the critical factors for superior organisational performance achievement. In addition, this study showed that collective organisational engagement is the main factor in mediating to enhance organisational performance. Thus, software development firms must consider the collective organisational engagement issues in their organisational performance practices

This study used a quantitative approach where a total number of 108 questionnaires were distributed among accountants. The returned questionnaires were analyzed by using PLS-SEM and the results show that only lack of awareness on internal control features have a significant relationship towards underutilization factors of CAS. Lastly, implications of the outcomes, potential limitations, and recommendations for future research are also discussed in this stud

Tax incentive is very useful for companies in tax planning for minimizing their tax liability. However, there is a concern in the complexity of the tax incentives procedures, as a result most of the application are from MNCs. This raise question whether the tax incentives available are fairly benefits to all companies, especially the new and SMEs especially manufacturing companies as one the industries that have intensity in capital expenditure. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between company characteristics and tax incentive of Malaysian manufacturing companies listed on KLSE. About five hundred forty three (543) annual reports were analysed in this study for both descriptive and regression analysis. The annual reports were extracted from Bursa Malaysia, which focusing from year 2017 until 2019. This study found that firm size, profitability and leverage have significant impact on tax incentive (proxied by the effective taxnrate). Firm size measured by total share outstanding has been found to have positive significant relationship with tax incentive. While, firm profitability measured by ROA has been found to have negative significant relationship with tax incentive; and in contrast ROE has positive significant impact on tax incentive. Other factors such as Big4 audit firm and firm size (measured by total asset and revenue) have no significant relationship at all. Results also revealed that the average effective tax rate of firm-year observations is more than standard tax rate of Malaysia at 24% which implies that the level of tax incentive application and utilization is still at low level where it could not minimize companies’ tax liability suggesting low tax planning activities

Third, analyse the implications of Islamic personality on asnaf entrepreneurs’ success. This study used a phenomenological-transcendental qualitative method involving seven iconic successful asnaf entrepreneurs in Selangor and Business Development Sector managers in TERAS. Data and information were collected by semistructured interviews and analysed using phenomenological methods assisted by Atlas.ti software version 8. The data validity and reliability were achieved using detailed study descriptions and expert reviews. The study found that internal factors tazkiyyah al-Nafs comprising mujahadah al-Nafs and riyadah al-Nafs and the support from external factors like family, related agencies, friends, mentors, and the community strengthen successful asnaf entrepreneurs’ identity.
