Impact of Country-Level Institutional Quality, Sponsors Ownership and Price Mechanism on Ipo Initial Return in Pakistan Stock Exchange

    No full text
This study investigates the variables affecting the Initial Public Offering (IPO) initial returns in Pakistan from 1996 to 2019 using three pre-listing information variables namely country-level institutional quality, sponsor ownership, and pricing mechanism motivated by the fact that the Pakistani IPO market contains diverse institutional and regulatory frameworks. Multiple regression analyses, i.e., Ordinary Least Square and Stepwise Regression, were used on 102 IPOs listed in the Pakistan stock market., IPO oversubscription and underwriter reputation are incorporated as moderating variables. Findings show that political stability, government effectiveness, and regulatory quality positively affect IPO initial return, whereas the lock-up ratio give a negative effect. Oversubscription give a negative moderating effect on the relationship between the pricing mechanism and IPO initial return. Political stability was found to lead to a high IPO initial return. Further, the quality of public service, the independence of civil service from political influences, and governmental legitimacy enhance investors’ confidence in companies’ prospects which increase demand for IPOs and higher initial returns. In addition, a good regulatory quality promotes market transparency and reduces uncertainty, which give signal of high-quality IPOs, resulting in high initial returns. The negative impact of the lock-up ratio on IPO initial return supports the prediction of the Risk-Return Trade-Off Theory, which states that the lock-up ratio signals the IPO quality. Meanwhile, the rule of law, lock-up period, and pricing mechanism are insignificant. Similarly, underwriter reputation plays an insignificant moderating role in the link between pricing mechanism and IPO initial return. The results offer valuable insights to market regulators, policymakers, investors, and underwriters in ensuring adequate subscriptions of the shares issued, as these variables are crucial for company transparency and market efficiency. The findings will also facilitate better investment decision-making concerning IPO subscriptions

Real Earnings Manipulation (REM), as an alternative earnings management technique, has become a concern for investors and regulatory agencies across the globe. Its effect has a direct consequence on the growth and future value of firms. This study aimed to make a meaningful contribution to the existing REM literature by investigating the influence of corporate CEO attributes and the Risk Management Committee (RMC) characteristics on REM by focusing on the non-financial companies listed on the main market of Bursa Malaysia. This study also adds to the body of knowledge by investigating the extent of REM under the presence of powerful CEOs from the perspectives of share-ownership, tenure, financial expertise, founder, honorific title and board independence. Hierarchical regression analysis was employed to explore the moderating effect of dedicated institutional investors on the relationship between CEO attributes and REM. The study sample involved 1707 Malaysian firmyear observations for the period from 2017 to 2019. Three REM models were used to come up with a combined REM proxy. The result shows a significant negative relationship between CEO founders, RMC diligence, RMC independence, dedicated institutional investors and REM practices. In addition, the study finds that CEO ownership, CEO honorific title, CEO power, separate RMC, RMC financial expertise and RMC overlap are associated with high REM. The results also indicate that the interaction of dedicated investors with CEO attributes (share-ownership, founder, board-independence and power) provides active monitoring against REM thus leading to higher earnings quality, implying that dedicated institutional investors tend to align their interests with majority-minority interests and protect shareholders' wealth; thus, leading to higher earnings quality. The results are robust under various additional analyses and model estimations and have implications for policymakers (such as the Securities Commission and the Audit Oversight Board), investors, directors of companies and other market participants in restraining REM practices

As a result of coronavirus epidemics, many nations confront a dire scenario in terms of the global economy and human social activities, including higher education. Many students throughout the world have been impacted by the education industry's shutdown, which has resulted in face-to-face class postponements. This is quantitative research in which convenience sampling was employed on a significant number of students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (380 respondents) (UUM). In participating in live online learning during the coronavirus outbreak, taking gender differences, differences between undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students, and differences in student's level IT literacy into account, this study investigated numerous critical parameters associated with technology readiness, learner control, online communication self-efficacy, self-directed learning, and motivation for learning. The independent sample t-test are using in this study. According to the data, there were no statistically significant differences between males and females. The Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was employed in this study to investigate differences in current educational level and degree of IT literacy. This research has implications for educators who employ live online learning in their classes, particularly for the design of lecture settings for students of varied educational levels. More virtual activities and improved student-to-student contact should be considered to increase student engagement

Football is a major sport in Malaysia, including at the youth level. However, currently the position of the Malaysian youth football team is unsatisfactory because in the Asian under 14 years old tournament, the Malaysian team is only able to compete in the early stages. One of the causes of this failure is because coaches do not practice appropriate leadership styles. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to identify the leadership style of coaches that are able to increase the motivation and achievement orientation of players as well as the performance of football players in Malaysian sports schools. A total of 290 sports school students who participated in the football league competition of the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) were involved in this study. Data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and SmartPLS 3.0 software. This study found that ten alternative hypotheses were accepted and 22 alternative hypotheses were rejected. The results of this study show that the leadership style of coaches who practice democratic style and positive feedback style have a significant influence on the performance of football players. The findings of this study also found that motivation and achievement orientation are not mediators to the influence of coaches' leadership style on players' performance. This study has contributed to the development of knowledge in the leadership style of youth football coaches in the Malaysian context. This study suggests that if player performance is to be improved, coaches should adopt a democratic leadership style and positive feedback

The goal of education today is to produce human capital that is competent, talented, innovative, creative, able to solve problems, and critical thinking to meet the needs of the future job market. The School Transformation Program 2025 (TS25) was created to meet this challenge in line with the Malaysian Education Development Plan (PPPM) 2013 - 2025 towards educational excellence. Nevertheless, the extent to which teachers are prepared to empower professional competencies, is grounded in elements of 21st century skills through the concept of lifelong learning. Therefore, this study aims to identify the relationship and influence of teachers' professional competencies on the development of continuous professionalism and 21st century skills. In addition, the role of continuous professional development as a mediator is also studied. A total of 242 secondary school teachers of TS25 Cohort 1 Northern Zone of Peninsular Malaysia were selected as study respondents. The research method was implemented using cross -sectional survey method through quantitative approach. The research instruments were adapted from the Malaysian Teacher Standard by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (2009), 21st Century Knowledge and Skills in Teacher Educator by Partnership For 21st Century Skills (2010) and Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) (2013) by Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and multiple regression. The findings showed that the level of professional competence and 21st century skills among the TS25 secondary school teachers of the study is high. In addition, the study found that the development of continuous professionalism has an influence on the relationship between teachers' professional competencies and 21st century skills. In turn, the development of continuous professionalism serves as a partial mediator of the relationship between teachers ’professional competencies and 21st century skills. Thus, the appreciation and cultivating of the concept of lifelong learning is important to enhance the professional competencies of teachers in an effort to integrate 21st century skills in teaching

Job performance of non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Malaysia

    No full text
Job performance plays a key role to determine an organization’s performance as high-performance workers allow the organization to reach its strategic objectives and thus sustain the competitive advantage. Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) have played a very crucial role in the growth and competitiveness of many nations. Numerous earlier studies identified the issues facing Malaysian organizations on productivity and very poor skills. However, the low productivity issues among NGO workers have led to an analysis of factors that can contribute to the causes of performance problems among NGO workers. This research is, therefore, performed to investigate the relationship between person-job fit, competency, role ambiguity, and job performance of workers in the NGOs. The respondents in this study included workers from various types of NGOs in Malaysia. The data were collected by mail survey and a quantitative method has been adopted. Overall, 365 questionnaires were distributed, and 247 surveys returned were considered useful for further evaluation, with a response rate of 67 percent. The study used multiple regressions analysis to determine the correlations among the variables in these studies. This investigation also examined the moderation effect of innovativeness in the relationship between person-job fit, competency, role ambiguity, and job performance. The results showed that important relationships existed between person-job fit, competency, role ambiguity, and job performance moderated by innovativeness. This study, which concerns worker performance, complements the existing research on NGOs. The findings of this study could contribute to developing a novel framework in understanding the factors influencing workers’ job performance among Malaysian NGOs. Finally, limitations of the research and recommendations for future research are presente

The influence of teacher wellbeing, professional development and perceived organizational support on teacher effectiveness: Teacher self-efficacy and resilience as mediators

    Get PDF
Previous research demonstrates a wide range of empirical evidences, which leads to teacher effectiveness, pointing towards the contribution of psychological and organizational factors, but mostly conducted separately. The main objective of this study is to test a structural model with teacher self-efficacy and resilience as proposed mediators in the relationship between teacher wellbeing, professional development, perceived organizational support and effectiveness. This study employed a quantitative research method, which includes structural equation model testing. Data were gathered using cross-section approach, from 380 teachers of the secondary schools in Bauchi State, Nigeria. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the hypotheses and the proposed model. The findings indicated that teacher wellbeing directly predicted teacher resilience, self-efficacy and teacher effectiveness; perceived organizational support directly predicted teacher resilience, self-efficacy and effectiveness; while teacher professional development only significantly and directly predicted teacher resilience, but did not predict teacher self-efficacy and effectiveness. It was also found that teacher resilience mediates the relationship between perceived organizational support and teacher effectiveness; and between teacher wellbeing and teacher effectiveness. However, teacher resilience does not mediate the relationship between teacher professional development and teacher effectiveness. Teacher self-efficacy is not a significant mediator of the relationship between any of the exogenous variables, with teacher effectiveness. Theoretically, the study contributes to the literature by concurrently test the two mediators, in identifying the direct and indirect influence of the selected psychological and organizational factors in explicating the variance of teacher effectiveness. Practically, it gives some guidance to all educational stakeholders, particularly in Bauchi State, Nigeria, to consider all the important factors included in the present study, aside from the previous empirical evidences, in making decisions with regard to their efforts towards enhancing teacher effectiveness
