This study investigated the relationship between government assistance, entrepreneurial competencies, family support and business performance of women entrepreneurs of Acheh in Indonesia. It also examined the moderating effect of the business environment on the relationship between government assistance, entrepreneurial competencies, family support and business performance of women entrepreneurs. The study was motivated by the inconsistent findings in the literature on the relationship between government assistance, entrepreneurial competencies, family support and business performance. These inconsistencies led to a new stream of research that indicated the importance of examining the effect of potential moderating variables that could clarify such a relationship. This study was underpinned by the resources-based view theory (RBV) and the contingency theory in order to explain the proposed conceptual framework. Only 133 questionnaires were deemed usable for actual data analysis using the Pearson correlation. The direct and indirect relationships between the variables were analyzed using the hierarchical regression. This study found that government assistance and family support had positive and significant relationships with the business performance of women entrepreneurs. However, entrepreneurial competencies had negative and significant relationships with the business performance of women entrepreneurs. This study also found that the business environment moderated the relationship between government assistance, family support and business performance of women entrepreneurs but did not moderate the relationship between entrepreneurial competencies and the business performance of women entrepreneurs. Finally, this study discussed the implications of the findings, limitations and directions for future research

This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between Somali diaspora returnees’ resources of knowledge, experience, and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and firm performance, with the moderating role of external environmental conditions. The fundamental framework was based on the resource-based theory and contingency theory. A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed to the Somali diaspora returnees who own a business firm based in the capital city of Somalia (Mogadishu) with a 65% response rate. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to examine the relationship between the variables of this study, specifically the link between returnees’ resources (knowledge, experience, and entrepreneurial orientation) and firm performance in Somalia. The results showed that four out of the seven hypotheses were positively and significantly related to business performance. Specifically, the returnees’ experience and entrepreneurial orientation have a direct significant positive relationship with business performance, whereas their knowledge is an insignificant predictor of business performance in Somalia. The moderating effect established that environmental condition was found to moderate the relationship between diaspora returnees’ experience and business performance. The theoretical contribution of the present study lies in its use of environmental conditions as moderators to the relationship between Somali diaspora returnees’ knowledge, experience, and entrepreneurial orientation on new business performance. From the practical perspective, the key contribution of this study gives business owners, managers, and academicians a further understanding on the effect of the diaspora returnees’ resources on business performance. Finally, this study can also provide directions to the Somali diasporas who are still living abroad but are interested in returning home for investment. It can also become a guide for foreign investors interested in investing in Somalia as it presents potential opportunities and perceived challenges

An analysis of Malaysia’s regional energy diplomacy: Experience and outcome

    No full text
This research examines Malaysia’s involvement in activities which render energy as the subject and/or object of foreign policies, either via bilateral or multilateral engagements, from the perspective of Neoliberal Institutionalism. Malaysia’s increased involvement in the global energy market necessitates this research which seeks (a) to determine the significance of energy in Malaysia’s economy and diplomacy; (b) to understand Malaysia's motivation for its involvement in these cooperations and (c) to identify steps to enhance its energy security through refinements of existing policies and recognizing new opportunities. This study utilizes information from official sources, interviews, published statistical data and past studies. The findings demonstrate that energy contributes significantly to Malaysia’s economy. Using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index and the Export Dependency Index, it was discovered that Malaysia is more dependent on its Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) exports to Japan and South Korea than the other way around, and that trades of energy commodities are based on practical consideration. Petronas also acts as an agent for Malaysia’s energy diplomacy in some capacity. In a non-trade arrangement such as the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), Malaysia utilizes ASEAN as a platform to engage with other countries, although this is less evident in the Malaysia- Thailand Joint Development Area (MT-JDA). Through the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Authority (MTJA), both Malaysia and Thailand agree to set-aside their disputes over maritime delimitation to enable joint exploration. Malaysia’s involvement in the Laos-Thailand- Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP) initiative demonstrates the viability of multilateral electricity trade in the region. The Four Fuel Diversification Policy 1981 (4FDP 1981) which increases natural gas utilization and the construction of the Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) pipeline are related to Malaysia’s involvement in MT-JDA, whereas the reform of its electricity sector through Malaysia Electricity Supply Industry 2.0 (MESI 2.0) was catalysed through its participation in the APG. While these initiatives contribute towards enhancing Malaysia’s energy security, Malaysia can still play a proactive role in regional energy cooperation by serving as a regional energy hub or transit state. Malaysia may also consider consolidating its energy administration in order to improve efficiency. The experience in negotiating for Joint Development Area (JDA) is useful in addressing the present South China Sea dispute

    Get PDF
Although user experience (UX) is dynamic and evolves over time, prior research reported that the learners' experience models developed so far were only for the static evaluation of learners' experiences. So far, no model has been developed for the dynamic summative evaluation of the UX of LMS platforms over time. The objective of this study is to build a UX model that will be used to evaluate learners' experience on LMS over time. The study reviewed relevant literature with the goal of conceptualizing a theoretical model. The Stimuli-Organism-Response (SOR) framework was deployed to model the experience engineering process. To verify the model, 6 UX experts were involved. The model was also validated using a quasi-experimental design involving 900 students. The evaluation was conducted in four time points, once a week for four weeks. From the review, a conceptual UX model was developed for the evaluation of learners' experience with LMS design over time. The outcome of the model verification shows that the experts agreed that the model is adequate for the evaluation of learners' experience on LMS. The results of the model validation indicate that the model was highly statistically significant over time (Week 1: x2(276) = 273 I 9.339, Week2: x2(276) = 23419.626, Week3: x2(276) =18941.900, Week4: x2(276) = 27580.397, p=000<0.01). Each design quality had strong positive effects on the learners' cognitive, sensorimotor and affective states respectively. Furthermore, each of the three organismic states: cognitive, sensorimotor, and affective, had strong positive influence on learners' overall learning experience. These results imply that the experience engineering process was successful. The study fills a significant gap in knowledge by contributing a novel UX model for the evaluation of learners' experience on LMS platforms over time. UX quality assurance practitioners can also utilize the model in the verification and validation of learner experience over tim

    Get PDF
Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) is a population-based metaheuristic method that widely used to solve various optimization problem due to its ability in stabilizing between exploration and exploitation. However, SCA is rarely used to solve discrete optimization problem such as Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) due to the nature of its solution which produce continuous values and makes it challenging in solving discrete optimization problem. The SCA is also found to be trapped in local optima since its lacking in memorizing the moves. Besides, local search strategy is required in attaining superior results and it is usually designed based on the problem under study. Hence, this study aims to develop a hybrid modified SCA with Tabu Search (MSCA-TS) model to solve QAP. In QAP, a set of facilities is assigned to a set of locations to form a one-to-one assignment with minimum assignment cost. Firstly, the modified SCA (MSCA) model with cost-based local search strategy is developed. Then, the MSCA is hybridized with TS to prohibit revisiting the previous solutions. Finally, both designated models (MSCA and MSCA-TS) were tested on 60 QAP instances from QAPLIB. A sensitivity analysis is also performed to identify suitable parameter settings for both models. Comparison of results shows that MSCA-TS performs better than MSCA. The percentage of error and standard deviation for MSCA-TS are lower than the MSCA which are 2.4574 and 0.2968 respectively. The computational results also shows that the MSCA-TS is an effective and superior method in solving QAP when compared to the best-known solutions presented in the literature. The developed models may assist decision makers in searching the most suitable assignment for facilities and locations while minimizing cost
