Current-induced dynamical tilting of chiral domain walls in curved microwires

    No full text
We report on the investigation of current-induced domain wall motion of Néel domain walls in perpendicularly magnetized microwires with curved geometries in the flow regime. The investigation was performed by time-resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. In particular, we studied the dynamical tilting of the Néel domain walls, observing that an asymmetric behavior in the domain wall tilt occurs upon an inversion of the polarity of the current pulse driving the motion, an effect not predicted by state-of-the-art theories and micromagnetic modeling

Dataset associated with 'Physical biomarkers of disease progression: on-chip monitoring of changes in mechanobiology of colorectal cancer cells'

    No full text
Disease can induce changes to subcellular components, altering cell phenotype and leading to measurable bulk-material mechanical properties. The mechanical phenotyping of single cells therefore offers many potential diagnostic applications. Cells are viscoelastic and their response to an applied stress is highly dependent on the magnitude and timescale of the actuation. Microfluidics can be used to measure cell deformability over a wide range of flow conditions, operating two distinct flow regimes (shear and inertial) which can expose subtle mechanical properties arising from subcellular components. Here, we investigate the deformability of three colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines using a range of flow conditions. These cell lines offer a model for CRC metastatic progression; SW480 derived from primary adenocarcinoma, HT29 from a more advanced primary tumor and SW620 from lymph-node metastasis. HL60 (leukemia cells) were also studied as a model circulatory cell, offering a non-epithelial comparison. We demonstrate that microfluidic induced flow deformation can be used to robustly detect mechanical changes associated with CRC progression. We also show that single-cell multivariate analysis, utilising deformation and relaxation dynamics, offers potential to distinguish these different cell types. These results point to the benefit of multiparameter determination for improving detection and accuracy of disease stage diagnosis

The role of ground conditions on the heat exchange potential of energy walls – data

    No full text
Geotechnical structures are being increasingly employed to exchange heat with the ground and supply thermal energy for heating and cooling of buildings and de-icing of infrastructure. Most current practical applications are related to energy piles, but embedded retaining walls are now also being adopted. However, analysis and design methods for these new dual use foundations and ground heat exchangers are currently lacking, making it hard to provide estimates of energy availability without recourse to full numerical simulation. This data set presents the results of thermo-hydro finite element analysis to develop charts of energy capacity that could be applied at the outline design stage for energy walls. Heat transfer rates for different conditions are presented. In particular, the influence of ground properties (hydraulic and thermal conductivities), and ground conditions, (groundwater temperature and flow velocity) are presented
