Dataset associated with Passive Pico-injection Enables Controlled Crystallization in a Droplet Microfluidic Device

    No full text
Segmented flow microfluidic devices offer an attractive means of studying crystallisation processes. However, while they have been widely employed for protein crystallisation, there are few examples of their use for sparingly-soluble compounds due to problems with rapid device fouling and irreproducibility over longer run-times. This article presents a microfluidic device which overcomes these issues, where this is constructed around a novel design of “pico-injector” that facilitates direct injection into flowing droplets. Exploiting a Venturi junction to reduce the pressure within the droplet, we show that passive injection of solution from a side-capillary can be achieved in the absence of an applied electric field. The operation of this device was demonstrated for calcium carbonate, where highly reproducible results were obtained over long run-times at high supersaturations. This compares with conventional devices that use a Y-junction to achieve solution loading, where in-channel precipitation of calcium carbonate occurred even at low supersaturations. This work not only opens the door to the use of microfluidics to study the crystallisation of low solubility compounds, but the simple design of a passive pico-injector will find wide utility in areas including multi-step reactions and investigation of reaction dynamics. Living with Dying: Everyday Cultures of Dying within Family Life in Britain, c.1900s-1950s' is a major AHRC funded project examining how death and dying were understood, discussed and experienced within everyday life. As part of the project were funded two internships, in collaboration with Special Collections at the University of Leeds, outputs include a report about the Leeds General Cemetery Burial Registers, held in Special Collections, as well as blog posts and other materials

The Orphan of Zhao (Shanghai Yueju Theatre)/《赵氏孤儿》(上海越剧院)

    Get PDF
This data consist of 11 productions of The Orphan of Zhao created by practitioners from four countries – China, Nigeria, Korea and Britain – and spans a range of theatrical genres: Chinese regional operas; spoken drama and Chinese opera in the Western style as well as dramas in Korean and in English (works by Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria and by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Britain). Viewers can find the introduction to each of the productions, including the information about the particular genre of each stage work. There are also still images and clips of videos; some production links include critical reviews. These diverse productions not only retell an ancient story of an orphan in China, but also enlighten us about the intriguing fluidity and continuity of human culture.

Dataset associated with study on swimming mechanics and propulsive efficiency in the chambered nautilus

    Get PDF
These data relate to an investigation into the wake structure and propulsive efficiency during jet propulsion swimming in the chambered nautilus (Nautilus pompilius). The propusive efficiency is relatively high for an animal that swims by jet propulsion and is related to the use of asymmetrical contractile cycles. Efficienct locomotion may be an adaptation to reduce the metabolic demands and protect the animal against hypoxia while foraging at depth

Data associated with 'Real-time prediction of rain-triggered lahars: incorporating seasonality and catchment recovery'

The rainfall and rain-triggered lahar record of the Belham River Valley, Montserrat between April 2010 and April 2012. The rainfall record comprises 0.1 mm resolution hourly precipitation data recorded at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory helipad gauge between Feb 2010 and Feb 2011, the St. George's Hill gauge between March 2011 and May 2011, and the maximum of the St. George's Hill and Windy Hill gauges between May 2011 and Feb 2012. The lahar database is compiled from visual inspection of seismic records and visual observations, and lahars are categorised based on magnitude (small, medium or large). Lahar signals were cross referenced to visual observations and carefully excluded from signals associated with primary volcanic activity and other seismic noise (such as construction vehicles)

Headlines corpora with automatically extracted news values scores.

    Get PDF
This dataset is part of a larger project on using headlines to predict the social media popularity of news articles. The first stage of the project was to develop methods of automatically extracting news values scores, which offer a new perspective on analysing headlines. The dataset consists of two headlines corpora -- The Guardian and New York Times -- collected in 2014 using news outlet APIs and used to develop the news values extraction methods. Each corpus includes a unique headline identifier (to enable recreating the corpus by querying the relevant API) and news values scores for each headline
