Dataset associated with 'Interactions between callose and cellulose revealed through the analysis of biopolymer mixtures'
The properties of (1,3)-β-glucans (i.e. callose) remain largely unknown despite their importance in plant development and defence. Mixtures of (1,3)-β-glucan and cellulose, in ionic liquid solution and hydrogels, were used as proxies to understand the physico-mechanical properties of callose in cell walls. With callose addition, the stiffness of callose-cellulose hydrogels was reduced, to a greater extent than predicted from the ideal mixing rule (i.e. the weighted average of the individual components’ properties). In contrast, yield behaviour after the elastic limit is more ductile in cellulose-callose hydrogels compared with sudden failure in 100% cellulose hydrogels. The viscoelastic behaviour and the diffusion of the ions in mixed ionic liquid solutions strongly indicate interactions between the polymers. These interactions are likely linked to changes in cellulose organization in the presence of callose recorded by FTIR analysis of hydrogels and transgenic cell walls. The implications in the context of callose biological function are discussed

Data for Pilot-scale biofiltration at a Materials Recovery Facility – Impact on Bioaerosol Control
Biofilters have long been considered as an effective technology for the abatement of odour and more recently, bioaerosols at enclosed waste management facilities. However, there is a lack of quantitative data on the influence of biofilter operating parameters on bioaerosol removal effectiveness. It is imperative to develop a better understanding of biofilter design and effective performance monitoring techniques especially if they are to continue to control all emissions and achieve their full potential. This study investigated the performance of pilot-scale biofilters for removal of bioaerosols from waste airstreams in a materials recovery facility based in Leeds, UK, with the objectives of assessing impact of gas phase residence time on bioaerosol control; evaluating net bioaerosol emitting potentials of biofilters and assessing the effect of inlet concentration on bioaerosol control; as well as assessing size distribution of bioaerosol particles in air exhausted from biofilters in order to relate these to the tidal volume inhaled by humans. A six-stage Andersen sampler was used to measure the concentrations of four groups of bioaerosols (Aspergillus fumigatus, total fungi, total mesophilic bacteria and Gram negative bacteria) in the airstream before and after passing through the biofilters over a period of 11 months. The biofilters achieved a removal efficiency up to 97% for A. fumigatus, 94% for total fungi, 86% for total mesophilic bacteria and 85% for Gram negative bacteria, provided that the inlet concentration was high (103 – 105 cfu m-3), which is the case for most waste treatment facilities. The performance was highly variable at low inlet concentration with some cases showing an increase in outlet concentrations, suggesting that biofilters had the potential to be net emitters of bioaerosols. The gas phase residence time did not appear to have any statistically significant impact on bioaerosol removal efficiency. Particle size distribution varied between the inlet and outlet air, with the outlet having a greater proportion of smaller sized particles that represent a greater human health risk as they can penetrate deep into the respiratory system where gaseous exchange occurs. However, the outlet concentrations were low and would further be diluted by wind in full scale applications. In conclusion, this study shows that biofilters designed and operated for odour degradation can also achieve significant bioaerosol control in waste gas

Climate model data presented in 'Climatic effect of Antarctic meltwater overwhelmed by concurrent Northern hemispheric melt': background
Output from a set of 9 global climate simulations for four transient scenarios of ice sheet meltwater contributions to the Meltwater Pulse 1a rapid sea level rise ~14.5 ka. The simulations were run with the HadCM3 general circulation model at the University of Leeds. They correspond to a 'background' meltwater flux (which comprises the first 525 years of all four meltwater pulse scenarios: teqjb) and the four transient meltwater pulse scenarios ('hiN_loS': teqjc + teqjg; 'hiS_loN': teqjd + teqjh; 'hiN_leads_loS': teqje + teqji; 'hiS_leads_loN': teqjf + teqjj), where the first simulation has a transient meltwater forcing for Meltwater Pulse 1a (teqjc, teqjd, teqje and teqjf, respectively), and the second simulation is a continuation returning to the 'background' meltwater flux (teqjg, teqjh, teqji and teqjj, respectively). All of these scenarios are fully described in the accompanying paper (Ivanovic et al., 2018, Geophysical Research Letters, doi: 10.1029/2018GL077623). The data is provided in NETCDF3 format within zipped directories corresponding to the meltwater scenarios. It consists of the freshwater forcing files (i.e. model input) and model output for each simulation. Model output is provided as time-series for a range of ocean, atmosphere and vegetation data. See the accompanying README.txt for a list of supplied output variables as well as more information on the directory structure for the supplied data
Dementia Carers Instrument Development (DECIDE) - Qualitative interview data
This dataset contains qualitative interview transcripts, obtained from 41 of 42 semi-structured interviews with a purposively diverse sample of primary carers aged ≥16 years, supporting a partner or family member who had a diagnosis of dementia and living in the community. Participants included 28 females, and 14 males (aged 31-83). The sample included 22 carers who were husband or wife of the person with dementia, and 20 who were daughters, sons, daughter-in-laws or granddaughters. Specific diagnoses of the person with dementia included Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, or other. Open questions were used to explore carers’ experiences, thoughts, and feelings related to challenging and rewarding experiences and events. Socratic questioning was employed, through asking carers to reflect on why particular experiences of care made them feel or think as they did. In this way, we aimed to uncover underlying needs that were impacted upon by the carer experience and generate nuanced contextualized accounts of how caring impacted on carers’ lives
