The effects of presenting an eye figure and a gratitude message on deterrence of inconsiderate behavior.
Deterrence of inconsiderate behavior is one of the critical subjects our society faces. Recent research has suggested that expressing gratitude for not engaging in such behavior can effectively deter it. Additionally, presenting an eye figure has been shown to promote prosocial behavior. This study examined whether the effectiveness of presenting an eye figure and a gratitude message in deterring inconsiderate behavior depends on the level of general trust of respondents. The hypothesis was that gratitude messages would have a deterrent effect only among high trustors, while eye images would have a deterrent effect among both high and low trustors. In order to examine these hypotheses, we conducted an online vignette study, where respondents answered the likelihood of engaging in inconsiderate behavior and their level of general trust. There were four conditions: ( 1 ) a poster with a gratitude message is presented, ( 2 ) a poster with an eye image is presented, ( 3 ) no poster is presented, and ( 4 ) a poster with an instruction to engage in considerate behavior is presented. The results showed no difference in the degree of inconsiderate behavior between conditions. Thus, none of our hypotheses was supported. This negative result may be due to the floor effect caused by the problem of the scenario used in the current study.departmental bulletin pape
Survey Research on Educational Effectiveness Using Original YouTube Videos ―Results of a Survey of Students Studying in the Medical and Welfare Fields
Changes in society due to the spread of the new coronavirus after 2020 have had a major impact on learning opportunities for students in social work training programs, such as the cancellation of field training and field trips. Concerned about such a situation, the authors, led by Izumi of the Fukushino Mirai Design Institute, began to produce videos of social work practitioners from all over Japan and upload them to YouTube for the purpose of producing teaching materials.
In reviewing classes, mainly in the social worker training course, students who viewed the videos commented,“ I was able to learn about work styles and fields I had not known before,” and“ This will be useful when thinking about my own career.” Therefore, we conducted a questionnaire survey of the students using Google Forms, without their names entered, with the hope that the students’ opinions about the original YouTube videos would lead to the creation of better video teaching materials and educational opportunities in the future.
We received a total of 104 responses from three training schools that cooperated with us. 72.1% of the students were aiming to become social workers, 46.2% were aiming to become mental health workers, and others (multiple responses were possible).
When asked “What did you find useful in understanding the content (multiple responses allowed)?” 72.1% responded “Atmosphere of the workplace/field,” followed by 57.7% for “How social workers work,” and 51.9% for “Social worker’s point of view. When asked if the videos were useful for their understanding of the class, about 90% of the respondents answered“ very useful” or“ fairly useful,” and when asked if the videos were helpful for their career choices and job hunting activities, about 70% answered“ very useful” or“ fairly useful.
The use of video materials was considered to have a positive impact on the students’ ability to visualize what it would be like to study and find a job. On the other hand, there were also comments such as,“ I think I will grow if I use the contents of the videos in classes and discussions,” and “The videos were useful in that they raised many questions, but did not solve them,” suggesting the need to consider how to use the video materials in the classroom, including the domain and structure. Since there have been few reports of ongoing efforts to produce such video materials, we would like to continue our investigation, including effective ways to utilize them in the future.departmental bulletin pape
Non-extraction orthodontic treatment of Class II malocclusion with impacted maxillary canine and bilateral scissors bite
Maxillary canine impaction and bilateral scissors bite can complicate orthodontic treatment. This case report describes the successful treatment of a 12−year−old girl with a maxillary left canine impaction, bilateral molar scissors bite and left Class II molar relationship using a lingual arch, multi−bracket appliance and a carriere motion appliance (CMO). The treatment period was 2 years and 6 months. As a result of treatment, the implanted left canine erupted by fenestration and traction using the lingual arch. The bilateral molar scissors bites were also improved by palatal traction from the lingual arch and multi−bracket appliance. The left Angel Class II molar relationship was improved using a CMO, and proper Class I canine and molar relationships on both sides were achieved. After 2 years of retention, slight retroversion was observed, but the occlusion was stable.departmental bulletin pape
