The Survival and Promotion of the Arabic Language in the Age of Science and Globalization
Get PDFLanguage death is a reality, and the world becomes threatened by the phenomena of linguistic genocide and the extinction of languages. The latter is very dangerous because it is likely to result in the disappearance of cultures and the loss of identities. Arabic is thought to be a sterile language that isuseless for teaching science disciplines, and it is seen as unable to survive and thrive in the age of globalization. This paper evinces the factors that hinder the flourishing of Arabic and suggests ways to promote and spread the use of this language. The topic is worth investigating, especially that the Frenchification of the educational system has led to a great deal of controversy. My paper borrows from key research literature and the thoughts of well-established scholars in linguistics and language studies. It proposes solutions to empower the Arabic language, relying on the factors that have promoted the growth of English around the world
The Ideological Construction of Otherness in Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim
Get PDFJ. Conrad’s narrative aim is well expressed in his preface to The Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’ (1897). He states, “you shall find there according to your deserts: encouragement, consolation, fear, charm – all you demand - and, perhaps, also that glimpse of truth for which you have forgotten to ask” (1963: xiii). Thus, a literary text may produce meanings, “What art makes us see, and therefore gives to us in the form of ‘seeing’, ‘perceiving’ and ‘feeling’ (which is not the form of knowing), is the ideology from which it is born, in which it bathes, from which it detaches itself as art, and to which it alludes” (Louis Althusser, 1971:222). The ‘ideology’, to which Lord Jim alludes, is ‘Othering’, a term introduced by E. Said, which refers to the act of emphasizing the supposed inferiority of marginalized groups. The Patna as “a crowded planet” draws a demarcation line between superior and inferior. The Muslim pilgrims, in chapter three, are described awfully, they are ‘mastiffs’ with an eye on the top of their head and ‘ugly mouths’. They are qualified as ‘reptiles’ and ‘pink toads’ mirroring a disgusting image of the ship. These ‘brutes’ “are as a burden to clear out as quickly as possible” (1994: 46). These images reinforce the Oriental discourse. While Jim and the rest of the Patna crew, like the ship’s officers, are placed in a position of superiority, they are nevertheless economically dependent on the Muslim pilgrims, just as many European countries were at the time economically reliant on the natural resources of their colonies. The juxtaposition of the economic reliance and the use of stereotypes suggest that Conrad is fully knowledgeable of his literary actions and wishes to be, perhaps, subversive. This paper questions how Conrad negotiates and resists the Othering process where Orientalism as ‘a negative ideology’ has provided him a cultural resource to meditate on the bewildering complexity of human difference, and express it narratively

Get PDFمنذ نشأة الإنسانية لم تكن الصناعة والحرب إلا شيء واحد تقريبا، وهذا سبب العمل الجماعي المنظم الذي ميز الاجتماع الإنساني، والذي لم تكن غايته القصوى سوى ضمان ما يحتاجه الإنسان لحفظ بقائه من خلال النشاط الاقتصادي والعمل الحربي اللذين يرتبطان بتأثير مزدوج بينهما، هذا التأثير يمكن ملامسته في كون الصناعة تنتج لحالة الحرب أكثر مما تنتج لحالة السلم، كما أن جوهر الحروب والصراعات يعتبر ذو طابع اقتصادي وبالأخص صناعي، بالإضافة إلى تأثيرهما المتبادل في أشكال العمل وعلاقته وتنظيمه وقيادته، وهذا بدوره يبين لنا سعة دائرة الوسائل المشتركة الاستعمال في حالتي السلم والحرب، والتي لم تكن سوى نتيجة الرغبة في التفوق التي دفعت بالجماعات البشرية إلى الابتكار وتطوير أساليب جديدة سواء في الصناعة أو في الحرب بهدف واحد ومشترك هو تحقيق التفوق والنصر، بحيث كلما تطورت الحروب زاد اعتمادها على القطاع الصناعي، وهو ما يحيلنا إلى مسألة الإبداع ودفع عجلة التقدم ، بعبارة أخرى يشكل العلم كتقنية إحدى أهم مرتكزات الصناعة والحرب وقد افضى هذا إلى ضرورة التمدن ونتج عنه التقسيم الاجتماعي للعمل ، لكن لا نريد من هذا القول ان الحرب ضرورية للتقدم الصناعي والاقتصادي، ولكننا سعينا إلى بيان التأثيرات المزدوجة بينهما في العديد من المجلات وفي كل المجتمعات.

Le barbouillage des panneaux de signalisation en Kabylie : un moyen de revendication linguistique et identitaire.
Get PDFLe phénomène de barbouillage existe dans de nombreux pays. Il est attesté en Algérie plus précisément en Kabylie. Le barbouillage cible de façon ostentatoire les inscriptions en langue arabe, rarement les caractères latins. Les lettres arabes se retrouvent alors complètement immaculées de peinture pour les remplacer par des inscriptions en tamazight, généralement en caractères tifinagh. Ces toponymes sont également retranscrits afin de les désarabiser.Dans cette contribution, nous nous intéressons principalement à la toponymie en Algérie (la région de la Kabylie) et au barbouillage des panneaux de signalisation ayant un rapport avec celle-ci. Nous rattacherons ce thème à la problématique de la question identitaire
خصائص النصّ المعجمي في معجم شجر الدّرّ
Get PDFارتأت هذه الورقة البحثية أن تُعالج خصائص النصّ المعجمي في معجم شجر الدُّرّ؛ من حيث بنيته وأهم القضايا التي طُرحت فيه، مُركّزين على إبراز مظاهر التجديد فيه؛ على مستوى طرق التعريف بالمعنى المعجمي وأسلوب عرض مكوناته، وأهم القضايا الدلالية التي عُني بها في صلب النص المعجمي كالمشترك اللفظي. وقد خلُصت الدراسة إلى تعيين مميزات النص المعجمي في شجر الدّرّ المؤسس على مفهوم المشترك اللفظي، إضافة إلى استنتاج أن عملية شرح المعنى في صلب هذه النصوص ارتكزت على توالد الألفاظ.
Characteristics of shear strength at the interface between two soil layers in ring shear apparatus
Get PDFThe slopes containing discontinuous planes such as bedding planes, rupture, or boundary between two soil layers are often prone to sliding. Thus, the characteristics of shear strength mobilized along the discontinuous planes should be examined. In this study, the shear strength at the interface between two different soil layers will be investigated based on ring shear test. The combined sample comprising of one kaolin layer and one kaolin + bentonite mixture layer was used to simulate the discontinuous planes between two soil layers. A number of ring shear tests were conducted on these samples at a normal stress of 98 kPa and shear rates from 0.02 to 20 mm/min using a multi-stage of shearing rates procedure. The research results indicate that the shear strength at the interface sharply increases to reach the peak value after a small shear displacement, then drops to the residual value. The residual interface strength tends to increase with increasing shear rates above 2 mm/min and the level of increase in residual interface strength depends on the contact surface. Furthermore, the effect of the order sample layer in combined samples can be ignored when determining the peak, the residual interface strengths as well as the rate effect on residual interface strength in the laboratory
