Machine Learning Approaches for Predicting Flexible Asphalt Pavement Elastic Modulus: ANN vs. Random Forest vs. XGBoost
This study compared four predictive models—Linear Regression (LR), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost)—for estimating the elastic modulus of flexible asphalt pavement. ANN demonstrated the highest predictive accuracy, with an optimized architecture featuring a single hidden layer with nine neurons. It achieved the best performance, with an R² value of 0.997, RMSE of 0.677, and MAE of 0.483. LR showed the weakest results, while RF and XGBoost performed better, with XGBoost slightly outperforming RF. However, neither model surpassed ANN. The findings highlight the importance of selecting appropriate predictive models for pavement modulus estimation, as ANN effectively captured complex nonlinear relationships. Due to limited data, the study evaluated models without splitting the dataset, which may have led to an overly optimistic assessment. Future research should incorporate larger datasets from diverse pavement structures and traffic conditions to improve model generalization. Additionally, exploring hybrid modeling approaches that combine multiple machine learning algorithms could further enhance predictive accuracy, offering more robust solutions for pavement design and quality assessment
Investigation of permanent deformation characterisation of different asphalt mixtures
Permanent deformation has emerged as a primary distress factor in asphalt pavements, largely driven by the recent rise in tyre pressures and axle loads. This deformation significantly impacts pavement performance, safety, and driving comfort, particularly when rutting depth exceeds a critical threshold. To address this issue, polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) mixtures have been widely adopted as an effective solution to resist permanent deformation (or rutting) under high temperatures. In this study, three different asphalt mixtures—one unmodified and two PMA mixtures—were selected for permanent deformation testing, which included the wheel tracking rutting test and the repeated load axial test under various conditions. The results were then compared, analysed, and discussed. The findings demonstrated a significant improvement in permanent deformation resistance in the PMA mixtures compared to conventional mixtures at both 45°C and 60°C. Furthermore, the results indicated that the use of PMA markedly enhanced both dynamic stability and strain rate, with the improvements becoming more pronounced at higher temperatures
الخطاب المقاوم للكلونيالية في رواية سهم الله لتشينوا أتشيبي
The novel, in post-colonial contexts, has sought to break barriers and transcend the narrow view that reduces it to a mere tool for reader entertainment. Instead, it has become a means to resist the Western cultural wave, which has often been cloaked in the guise of civilization, modernization, and identity dialogue to further hegemonic projects. As a cultural product, the novel has succeeded in deconstructing the stereotypical image propagated by the narratives of the center. This is exemplified in Chinua Achebe's novel Arrow of God, where the author attempts to shatter the stereotype of the "Other"—particularly the African—as an inferior being of a secondary status. The novel captures the fierce struggle between the marginalized indigenous people and the supremacist whites. In this regard, this research paper aims to delve into the practices employed by the center to establish its dominance and to uncover the mechanisms through which the novel works to establish the identity of the indigenous people and refute the central narrative
De Gaulle’s Doctrine of "Elimination" Through "Integration" in Algeria: the Case of "The Constantine Plan" and the Fiasco of French Settler Colonial Society.
The article scrutinizes France’s policy of elimination through integration in Algeria in De Gaulle’s Address on “The Constantine Plan” (Oct. 3, 1958). Utilizing Settler Colonialism theory, the article analyzes the Address to reveal that French settler colonial enterprise in Algeria hinged on the integration of Algerians to erase them culturally and hence ensure the survival of its settler colonial society. To this end, France resorted to improving the economic, social and cultural conditions of the Algerians and lulled them to believe in the equality between Muslims and Europeans to ultimately accept French sovereignty. The study concludes that De Gaulle’s objective of integrating Algerians into the European society was a desperate attempt by the French military and political elites to stymie the decolonization of Algeria
This research paper seeks to highlight the importance of Algerian academic criticism as a bridge linking the contemporary poetic text and the recipient, in addition to standing on how to understand and analyze contemporary Algerian poetry in academic studies, and we have focused on the doctoral thesis in particular as one of the highest certificates that the researcher reaches in his scientific career, as academic criticism is an important source of knowledge, and provides a valuable scientific contribution in the field of literary criticism, and plays an important role in understanding and analyzing poetry based on contemporary critical mechanisms and approaches It reveals aesthetic values in contemporary poetry that stem from semantic density, and suggestive power derived from symbolic language in particular. This is what we will explain through our analysis of the thesis of the researcher Najim Satteh, and whether this academic study is stylistic or a mixture of different critical approaches, we have tried to trace how it received the contemporary Algerian poetic discourse by standing on the critical issue at hand, and the extent to which the researcher applied the approach he stated in his analysis and understanding of poetry
Mechanical and microstructural properties of high strength concrete with manufactured sand and recycled coarse aggregates
The influence of manufactured sand (M-sand) and Recycled Coarse Aggregates (RCA) on the fresh, mechanical and microstructural properties in the high strength concrete is focused in order to promote sustainable materials in the high strength concrete. Therefore, there are four proposed mixes such as conventional concrete, RCA replaced by 25% coarse aggregate, MS replaced by river sand 100% and combination of MS (100%) and RCA (25%) replaced together are designated as CM, RC, MS and MSRC, respectively. The proposed mixes were evaluated through the mechanical tests such as compression and tension tests as well as the microstructural analysis such as microstructure as well as elements and phase formations through the SEM, XRD and EDX analysis. It was concluded that the inclusion of RCA and M-sand in concrete has reduced the workability because of their higher water absorption capacity. The compressive strength of mix RC and MS was reduced by 12.9 and 8.24%, respectively as compared to CM. Also, the compressive strength of mix MSRC was reduced by 13.3% compared to the control mix. It was observed that the tensile strength of mix RC and MS individually was reduced by 7.7 and 7.17%, whereas the same on mix MSRC was further reduced by 16% as compared to mix CM. The microstructure of the MS was relatively denser as compared to the RC, however the microstructure of mix MSRC was found to be weaker due to untreated silica particles present in the interface of mortar as compared to the control mix CM. The CM mix revealed that the brownmillerite and calcite act as an activator in the early hydration of concrete and as an inert filler. The RC mix mostly showed the presence of quartz and small peaks of hatrurite and the mineral phase on MS mix has strong peaks of quartz and albite, whereas the mineral phases in MSRC show both hatrurite and albite along with quartz are the hydration products of C3S. The presence of higher Sulphur content in a mix of RC, MS and MSRC also indicates lower durability to water penetration and brittle microstructure

The issue of development and cultural revolution is one of the most important topics that have occupied the Algerian intellectual scene, particularly engaging the thinker Abdullah Shareet. It played a significant role in his philosophy and intellectual activity, leading him to author several books addressing this issue. Among these are "The Reality of Algerian Culture" and "The History of Culture and Literature in the East and the Maghreb," which clearly reflect his focus on this subject. Accordingly, this research paper aims to shed light on one of the most pressing contemporary philosophical issues: the problem of culture and development in Algeria, as presented by the encyclopedic thinker Abdullah Shareet. His philosophy spans various fields, including politics, education, culture, history, and even religion. In each of these areas, he held distinct views and opinions, consistently seeking to explore intellectual problems and provide solutions. The issue of development is one such problem he extensively addressed
