    Kindergarteners Learning About Kindness

    No full text
This capstone project focuses on kindergarten children\u27s development of kindness. Too few kindergarteners clearly understand the importance of the prosocial skills of kindness. They have not acquired or have a clear understanding of the different kinds of kindness. Many have not been taught or have a mixed understanding of the ways they can express kindness. As a result, there is a need for services and programs that can help nurture prosocial skills such as kindness in young school-age children. I developed a set of three 30-minute lessons to teach kindergarteners about showing kindness. In the first lesson, kindergartners learned about identifying kind behaviors. In the second lesson, they learned to demonstrate when and how to share with others. In the final lesson, kindergarteners learned about using kind words. The lessons were presented to kindergarteners at Amesti Elementary School in Watsonville, California. The majority of these students are Hispanic English language learners. Due to this, I presented the lessons in both English and Spanish

    Food Insecurity at Los Abuelitos

Food insecurity among the senior population is a social problem that can cause malnutrition, chronic conditions, and death. CHISPA Housing Management and Community Services is a non-profit organization that builds low-income senior housing in Monterey County and provides senior hot lunches to its residents. The causes of food insecurity are a lack of income, chronic conditions, and transportation issues. The consequences of food insecurity are the deterioration of their physical and mental health. This capstone project is an assessment that consists of gathering data on the residents who reside at the Los Abuelitos Townhome housing rather than taking advantage of the food security services offered. Surveying questions would assess who participated in on-site and off-site services and who still needed assistance with food insecurity resources. The total number of respondents shows that 96.2% of the senior population at this site is taking advantage of the senior lunch program and food bank distribution. A good recommendation for CHISPA Community Services is to follow up with partner organizations to solve the transportation issue for those who need it. Establishing a sound transportation system will benefit all residents as a community and will fulfill CHISPA\u27s mission statement of building healthy neighborhoods

    Conquering and Combating Isolation

    Get PDF
The Conquering and Combating Isolation initiative, implemented by an OMNI Resource Center intern, addressed severe isolation issues among individuals with mental health disabilities in Salinas, California. The macro-level problem encompassed the adverse effects of isolation on mental health and well-being. At the micro-level, the agency-specific issue was the heightened risk of unhealthy habits, depression and anxiety, and suicidal ideation among OMNI clients due to loneliness caused by homelessness, stigma, and a lack of social skills. The project entailed facilitating weekly peer support group discussions to minimize impacts of isolation, aiming for increased knowledge and skill-building. Findings revealed positive outcomes as clients reported learning new strategies to combat isolation. Recommendations for the agency include attempting to reach more individuals about feelings of isolation, as well as continuous knowledge checks to ensure clients are grasping the tactics being shared

A Cross-Sectional Examination of Wrist Wrap Use Prevalence and Characterization for Ergogenic Purposes in Actively Competing Powerlifters

    Get PDF
Purpose: Wrist wraps are regularly incorporated by competitive powerlifters, but several product-specific variations may influence any potential ergogenic benefits. In addition, the prevalence of athletic wrist wrap use is hitherto undescribed. Methods: Seventy actively competing powerlifters (n=70; 27±6y) who competed in the last two years were randomly recruited at sanctioned meets, whereby wrist wrap use descriptive data (wrap style [F or S], wrap length, and events used), wrap tightness (assessed via pulse oximeter-detected oxygen saturation (SpO2) and subjective discomfort [Borg CR10+]), as well as post-meet bench press one repetition maximum (1RM) were collected. Wrist wrap use prevalence data (wrap style, wrap length, and events used) were compared across TX, NC/SC, and CA regions, along with any potential correlations between both region-collapsed wrapped SpO2 and bench press. Finally, predictors of bench press 1RM (weight [kg], age [y], stiff wrap, wrap length, wrapped discomfort [WCR10+], and WSpO2) were assessed using linear regression, whereby all aforementioned statistical analyses were set at a significance level of p\u3c.05. Results: Analyses failed to detect any significant regional differences in wrap style, length, or events used (p\u3e0.05). Moreover, linear regression analysis revealed a significant effect (r2= 0.851, p = 0.02) where weight solely predicted bench press 1RM (p = 0.0433). Conclusions: Although we failed to detect any significant wrist wrap relationships, actively competing powerlifters nonetheless prominently utilize wraps across the regions assessed. Therefore, the potential for wrist wraps to augment bench press performance warrants further elucidation in a controlled, standardized investigation

Health Disparities Across High School Students

    Get PDF
This senior capstone examines health disparities among high school students that attend Central Coast High School, a continuation high school that serves only 11th and 12th graders in Seaside, California that are not in line to graduate due to the lack of credits and are below a 2.0 grade point average. The primary purpose of this project is to bring resources to the most vulnerable students and create awareness on the importance of being healthy. The wellness fair brought aide and resources for problems like addiction, alcohol abuse, depression, suicide, and birth control due to the increasing numbers of students with mental health challenges. The benefits of this project are educating students on the importance of maintaining good overall health and providing them with much needed resources. Future steps would be to implement this project across all traditional high schools at least once every year including Central Coast High

Improving Health, Diet, & Nutritional Awareness Among the Veteran Population

    Get PDF
The Veterans Transition Center of California (VTC) helps empower veterans that are experiencing homelessness by supporting them with resource connections to improve their health, financial, and housing status. Veterans suffer from poor health both physically and mentally for several reasons, however, having a poor nutritional diet is a common factor that results in critical medical conditions. The purpose of this project was to increase awareness of health, nutrition, and diet among veterans by creating a resource manual full of health-forward recipes using fresh and nutrient-rich ingredients. This manual became accessible to veterans through the VTC food pantry. Two veterans attended the community meeting and 14 veterans used the pantry following the implementation of the resource manual. Additional steps to motivate nutritional health practices among veterans are to increase the production of the resource manual to expand accessibility, add recipes, and ask for veteran feedback to incorporate their personal needs

    Better Budtender Training

A survey conducted by the cannabis education program in the Monterey County Health Department (MCHD) concluded that around 57% of users in the county do not feel educated enough in the subject to form their own educated opinions about cannabis use (Cannabis Education Survey 2022). The MCHD decided to address this concern by collaborating with local dispensaries to provide an educational course in video form for budtenders. This video provides factual information on consumption methods, how differently they may affect people and the recommended time to wait before operating a vehicle. Following this education, consumers of cannabis will have reliable sources to ask questions to as well as become educated on safe practice, safe storage and the legal do’s and don’ts of recreational cannabis. The presentation was distributed to one dispensary with a total of 20 views. Only 5% of participants filled out the evaluation, and they felt more educated on cannabis use

Raising Awareness of Bullying with Elementary Students

    Get PDF
Many elementary school students experience bullying. As a result, they may develop anxiety or depression and suffer from decreased academic performance. When elementary school students learn how to address bullying by their peers, the rates of bullying behavior decrease. To address the lack of bullying prevention education, I created a two-day lesson for the third graders in the Afterschool Academy (Expanded Learning Opportunity) at Olson Elementary School in Marina, California
