    Developing Invisible and Visible Disability Education for Adults

    Many adults may not be aware of the difference between invisible and visible disabilities and the necessary accommodations. This may cause their own perception of disabled individuals to be affected, and their lack of knowledge may have an impact on the way they teach their children about disabled individuals. As adults gain a greater understanding of disabilities, their stereotypical view of disabled individuals may decrease, and they may be able to create a more positive and inclusive attitude toward individuals with disabilities

    Monterey Bay Charter School is a Waldorf K-8 school in Monterey, California that focuses on the restorative justice approach to discipline. Post-pandemic, student misconduct has increased 56% with 87% of schools nationwide reporting student behavior worsening (NCES, 2022). In one first-grade classroom at Monterey Bay Charter, a project was implemented to improve classroom behavior among a caseload of 5 students. The program consisted of students individually leaving class to participate in weekly emotional intelligence and coping mechanism workshops. At the end of the project, it was reported that 67% of participants improved their behavior, while 33% remained the same. The emotional and coping workshop initiative should be continued with young students as it is an effective way to improve classroom behavior

    This senior capstone examines the relationship between technology and the level of physical activity participation of elementary school students, in particular, the impact of technology on their physical activity participation. Through the use of literature review, in-field observations and surveys with students and teachers and physical education specialists, the result findings reveal that there is an obvious decline in the level of student physical participation in activities. However, the relationship between technology and student participation in physical activity is complex and is influenced by various factors, such as the integration of technology in the classroom, school policies, and the frequency and types of technology use. It is important to note that strategies to promote physical activity in elementary schools should be considered as essential factors that affect the overall health and well-being of students during this digital age

    The Impact of Hands-on Environmental Science Lessons on Middle School Students Learning

    This capstone research focuses on the impact of hands-on environmental science lessons on middle school students learning. In this research project, besides conducting an extensive literature review, I collaborated with five middle school educators in a local school district to understand how student engagement and retention are affected by hands-on science material and surveyed 151 7th-grade students. This senior capstone explores the individual experiences of middle school students, their relationship to science education, and possible future implications of their learning. Many aspects of a student’s personal and educational life can positively or negatively impact their relationship with science and their interaction with the natural world. The result findings indicate that providing meaningful hands-on environmental science lessons with relevant content and instructions could make a long-lasting impact on middle school students

    From Hellfighters to Tuskegee Airmen

    The First and Second World Wars were enormous facilitators for drawing people from all over to enlist. Nowhere was this more the case than in the United States after it entered the war in 1916, and later in 1941. Although a vast majority of those who joined were white, a smaller percentage were African Americans. Due to the racial relations of the time, they were separated into their own black only regiments. The 369th Infantry Regiment would come to be known as the Harlem Hellfighters and were sanctioned to work in the French Army. The 99th Pursuit Squadron, also known as the Tuskegee Airmen, would fight against the Axis powers in multiple regions and would create massive strides to improve integration in the military. The story of their trials and tribulations during the wars deserve to be represented. I have been allowed, through this essay, to become enlightened to the experiences these men endured. I was also able to see how the war experiences affected race relations in the United States and how these men helped to shape the future of segregation in the military. The sources utilized were detrimental in order to understand how these incredibly brave men helped to shape the country, and the entire world through their efforts in Europe and the regions in which they fought

    Interfaces, modularity and ecosystem emergence: How DARPA modularized the semiconductor ecosystem

    Scholars have identified the pivotal role that modularity plays in promoting innovation. Modularity affects industry structure by breaking up the value chain along technical interfaces, thereby allowing new entrants to specialize and innovate. Less well-understood is where modularity comes from. Firms seem to behave consistently with the theory in some settings, especially the information technology sector, but not in others, such as automobiles. Here we show how the government has a role to play in generating open interfaces needed for modularity, utilizing a case study of the semiconductor industry from 1970 to 1980. We show how the Defense Department\u27s support for this effort aligned with its mission-based interest in semiconductors. We thus contribute a new source of open standards to the modularity literature, as well as a new analytical perspective to the public research funding literature

    Neuromarketing as a scale validation tool: Understanding individual differences based on the style of processing scale in affective judgements

    This paper revisits a well-cited and widely applied consumer scale, Style of Processing (SOP) (Childers et al., Journal of Consumer Research, 1985, 12, 125), that has been used to investigate individual differences in processing visual versus verbal information in marketing. The scale has advanced knowledge in fields related to marketing communications, product development, psychology, advertising, education and learning theories, shedding light on our understanding of consumer psychology related to persuasion, comprehension, memory, and other consumer cognitive processes involving information. In a research dialog that took place in 2008, a need for further SOP validation was suggested using a neuromarketing approach. We took this call forward and conducted an event-related-potential (ERP) experimental research study using electroencephalogram (EEG) to validate the SOP scale, focusing on differential affective processing between verbalizers and visualizers. We not only demonstrate how neuromarketing tools can be utilized to provide evidence for scale validity, providing advantages over self-reported measures; but more importantly, address issues related to understanding differential fluency effects that exist between visualizers and verbalizers. Behavioral data revealed varying reaction times to emotional stimuli of a pictorial nature. We further identify two ERP components in our data, early left anterior negativity (ELAN) and late negative slow wave (LNSW), that differentiate individual processing fluency in affective versus evaluative-based judgements. Findings confirmed the construct validity of the SOP scale and enhance our understanding of individual differences in emotional processing of pictorial information

    Resource recovery of biological residues from the Brazilian poultry industry in mitigating environmental impacts: A life cycle assessment (LCA) approach

    Poultry farming is often associated with negative environmental impacts, such as water quality degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. This study covers important gaps in the geographic scope of poultry farming using Life Cycle Assessment analysis. Data on animal feed, energy, packaging, and waste were collected from the poultry industry in Rondônia, Brazil. The life cycle inventory included all inflows and outflows of feed production, poultry housing, slaughter, processing, the retail market, and the functional unit of “1 kg chicken meat with 0.22 kg protein”. The ReCiPe Midpoint (H) method was used for seven categories of impact. The results showed that emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG, CO2, N2O and CH4) during the feed production phase was dominant, totaling 2.0 kg CO2-eq per kg of live weight produced. This stage was most relevant in six of seven categories of impacts assessed. During the poultry housing stage, terrestrial acidification was dominated by emissions of NH3, P and N2O from one-day-old chicks (hatching eggs, poultry house litter, and feed). The total environmental impact of producing broilers in Brazil amounted to 3.37 kg CO2-eq per kg of meat at the consumer market gate. The LPG gas and biological waste from slaughterhouses was dominant in this phase. The retail stage revealed contributions above 43% in all impact categories due to high consumption of electricity (0.11 kWh (0.39 MJ) per kg of meat). Three scenarios were proposed and demonstrated, using biological residues as a source of nutrients for feed composition. The results showed that using poultry viscera meal led to better environmental outcomes for all impacted categories

    Post-processed data and graphical tools for a CONUS-wide eddy flux evapotranspiration dataset

    Large sample datasets of in situ evapotranspiration (ET) measurements with well documented data provenance and quality assurance are critical for water management and many fields of earth science research. We present a post-processed ET oriented dataset at daily and monthly timesteps, from 161 stations, including 148 eddy covariance flux towers, that were chosen based on their data quality from nearly 350 stations across the contiguous United States. In addition to ET, the data includes energy and heat fluxes, meteorological measurements, and reference ET downloaded from gridMET for each flux station. Data processing techniques were conducted in a reproducible manner using open-source software. Most data initially came from the public AmeriFlux network, however, several different networks (e.g., the USDA-Agricultural Research Service) and university partners provided data that was not yet public. Initial half-hourly energy balance data were gap-filled and aggregated to daily frequency, and turbulent fluxes were corrected for energy balance closure error using the FLUXNET2015/ONEFlux energy balance ratio approach. Metadata, diagnostics of energy balance, and interactive graphs of time series data are included for each station. Although the dataset was developed primarily to benchmark satellite-based remote sensing ET models of the OpenET initiative, there are many other potential uses, such as validation for a range of regional hydrologic and atmospheric models
