Short- and Long-Term Weight Loss Among Women Is Unrelated to Completed Exercise Within an Obesity Intervention Focused on Self-Regulation
Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate 1) if completed exercise amounts were associated with short- and long-term weight loss within a cognitive behavioral intervention and 2) if changes in theory-based psychosocial factors significantly explained weight change.
Methods: A total of 110 women with obesity participated in a yearlong treatment focused on self-regulation and were grouped based on their amount of completed exercise and assessed on changes in weight, self-regulation, and self-efficacy.
Results: There were significant overall improvements in all study measures from baseline–month 6 and baseline–month 12. Overall weight loss means (–5.8 and –5.3 kg, respectively) did not significantly differ across groups averaging the equivalent of \u3c 2.5; 2.6–4.5; 4.6–7.0; and \u3e 7.0 moderate-intensity exercise sessions per week. Similarly, psychosocial improvements did not significantly differ by exercise amount grouping. Increase in exercise self-regulation significantly predicted eating self-regulation gains over both 6 and 12 months. Over the same time periods, the significant prediction of weight loss by eating self-regulation increase was mediated by change in eating self-efficacy.
Conclusion: Results suggest attainment of government-recommended amounts of exercise are not associated with significantly greater weight loss than lower amounts of exercise within an intervention focused on self-regulation. Associations of exercise with psychosocial correlates of weight loss should be a treatment consideration

Collaborative fisheries research reveals reserve size and age determine efficacy across a network of marine protected areas
A variety of criteria may influence the efficacy of networks of marine protected areas (MPA) designed to enhance biodiversity conservation and provide fisheries benefits. Meta-analyses have evaluated the influence of MPA attributes on abundance, biomass, and size structure of harvested species, reporting that MPA size, age, depth, and connectivity influence the strength of MPA responses. However, few empirical MPA evaluation studies have used consistent sampling methodology across multiple MPAs and years. Our collaborative fisheries research program systematically sampled 12 no-take or highly protective limited-take MPAs and paired fished reference areas across a network spanning 1100 km of coastline to evaluate the factors driving MPA efficacy across a large geographic region. We found that increased size and age consistently contributed to increased fish catch, biomass, and positive species responses inside MPAs, while accounting for factors such as latitude, primary productivity, and distance to the nearest MPA. Our study provides a model framework to collaboratively engage diverse stakeholders in fisheries research and provide high-quality data to assess the success of conservation strategies
Bioavailability of Macro and Micronutrients Across Global Topsoils: Main Drivers and Global Change Impacts
Understanding the chemical composition of our planet\u27s crust was one of the biggest questions of the 20th century. More than 100 years later, we are still far from understanding the global patterns in the bioavailability and spatial coupling of elements in topsoils worldwide, despite their importance for the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we measured the bioavailability and coupling of thirteen macro- and micronutrients and phytotoxic elements in topsoils (3–8 cm) from a range of terrestrial ecosystems across all continents (∼10,000 observations) and in response to global change manipulations (∼5,000 observations). For this, we incubated between 1 and 4 pairs of anionic and cationic exchange membranes per site for a mean period of 53 days. The most bioavailable elements (Ca, Mg, and K) were also amongst the most abundant in the crust. Patterns of bioavailability were biome-dependent and controlled by soil properties such as pH, organic matter content and texture, plant cover, and climate. However, global change simulations resulted in important alterations in the bioavailability of elements. Elements were highly coupled, and coupling was predictable by the atomic properties of elements, particularly mass, mass to charge ratio, and second ionization energy. Deviations from the predictable coupling-atomic mass relationship were attributed to global change and agriculture. Our work illustrates the tight links between the bioavailability and coupling of topsoil elements and environmental context, human activities, and atomic properties of elements, thus deeply enhancing our integrated understanding of the biogeochemical connections that underlie the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems in a changing world

Improving Learning Environments in Schools Through Evidence Based Strategies
Blue Zones Project is a community led well- being initiative serving all of Monterey County. When a school participates it must earn a specific number of points by implementing and enforcing recommended policies and programs. Currently in Monterey County, 45 percent of adults have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. A big focus of Blue Zones Project is diabetes education for students and their families. The approval process of a middle school in Salinas, Ca is currently in progress and will not be completed by the end of December 15, 2023. School Approval signifies a commitment to creating environments that prioritize physical health, nutrition education, social connectedness, and emotional well-being. The next step for sustainability is to collaborate with Family Resource Centers and Community Centers who will continue to provide support for students and families

Digital Technologies and the Future of Work: An Agent-Centred Ethical Perspective Based on Goods, Norms, and Virtues
The ethical analysis related to the impact of digital technologies on the future of work needs to be conducted considering the theoretical diversity of ethics. After reviewing prominent existing approaches to ethics (utilitarianism, deontological ethics, virtue ethics), this chapter suggests the need for an agent-centred ethical perspective based on goods, norms, and virtues for the evaluation of ethical issues related to digital technologies and their impact on the future of work. Different examples illustrate the merits of this approach, helping to untangle complex issues concerning the relationship between the nature and scope of digital technologies, regulatory needs within the new social and technological context, and the intentions and attitudes of workers towards their work, their personal flourishing, and their contribution to the good of society
Self-Regulation in a Preschool Classroom
This capstone project focuses on preschool aged children’s development of self regulation. Self-regulation involves children\u27s developing ability to regulate their emotions, thoughts and behavior to enable them to act in positive ways toward a goal. Young children have a harder time with self regulation than older children. Working in a preschool made me learn that some children have a harder time controlling their emotions and behaviors than others. It is important to address this because good early self-regulation is associated with later positive developmental outcomes. “Supporting self regulation development in early childhood is an investment in later success, because stronger self-regulation predicts better performance in school, better relationships with others, and fewer behavioral difficulties. Moreover, the ability to regulate thoughts, feelings, and actions helps children successfully negotiate many of the challenges they face, promoting resilience in the face of adversity” (Rosanbalm, 2017). My project first taught children how to emotionally regulate when feeling sad or mad when it is play time. Second, I taught children how to stay on task during circle time or class activities. Lastly, I taught the preschool children to raise their hand before speaking. My capstone project addressed this by providing three lessons at Laura’s Barn Child Care and Preschool with children aged 4-5 years old
