Reluctancy in Monterey County to get COVID-19 Vaccine
Get PDFThe agency is Central Coast Visiting Nurses Association & Hospice. The Clinic department of the agency would be implementing the project. The communities served are Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz counties. The problem related to my project is the vaccine hesitancy within Monterey County. The project’s purpose is to address the issue of vaccine hesitancy in Monterey County. The implementation method would be to do outreach within the county about upcoming vaccine clinics. The expected outcomes would be that more people would attend said vaccine clinics. The most important finding is that more people participated when there was outreach done and when the disease was more relevant during the time. The project had not met the expected outcome as more people began to not believe the vaccine was as necessary as it was before. The recommendation is to do more outreach for the vaccine clinics when the disease is more relevant and people are willing to get vaccinated
Artistic Expression as a Pathway to Mental Wellness
Get PDFChildren in low-income communities do not have ways to express their feelings and emotions. Nueva Vista is a non-profit organization in the community of Santa Cruz that provides a variety of services including homework club that serve the communities around Santa Cruz County. The project is a series of workshops in partnership with Artistic Expression as a Pathway to Mental Wellness to give children who are in middle school and high school that come to homework club a way to use art to better their mental health and let their feelings out through their artwork. The workshops focus on the different types of contributing factors like childhood trauma, and lack of support. Artistic Expression as a Pathway to Mental Wellness will help decrease the consequences like getting involved in violence, developing more mental health problems, and death from arising
Finding Graduation Success in Vocational Education
Get PDFRancho Cielo is a social and learning institution serving the disconnected and underserved youths situated in Monterey County who share the organization’s vision for their success in the future. The organization is ensuring self-esteem and self-sufficiency for every young person. The students are currently facing learning barriers that have an affect on their performance. To solve this, the students were asked to complete a workshop and survey. The project’s findings revealed that students enjoy their time when in Rancho Cielo and have managed to acquire valuable skills during their attendance. To address the lack of motivation among learners, Rancho Cielo should consider using the learning styles of the students for coming up with the curriculum of the future. At the same time, students should continue conducting an annual survey to identify the concerns of the students and problems within the agency
Graduation Anxiety

Anxiety during this time can cause students to feel worried leading up to graduation and have an impact on sleeping patterns, concentration in doing coursework and changes in relationships. This project is a workshop that includes ways to manage graduation anxiety and talks about fear of the future, relationship changes, dealing with expectations and the working world. Transforming Monterey Counties Food Environment
Get PDFThe Blue Zones project was brought to Monterey County due to the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Nearly fifty percent of Monterey county are pre-diabetic or diabetic. The Blue Zones Project of Monterey County is a well being improvement initiative that works with local schools, worksites, restaurants and organizations to educate and promote healthier habits. The food sector of the project consists of individuals who work with restaurants and grocery stores here in Monterey County. The project serves Marina, Seaside, Monterey, Salinas, Pacific Grove, Gonzalez, King City, Soledad, Castroville, and Chular. A major issue the project wants to address is enhancing the healthy food accessibility for the community members. Blue Zones works with local restaurants to develop healthy food menus that consist of plant based meals. In order to combat this, they help restaurants create healthier environments for their customers. The implementation process begins with walking into a local restaurant and explaining what the project is and trying to convince the owners to take the initiative of becoming Blue Zones approved. By approving multiple restaurants in the area people will have more healthy options when eating out. Each year the project aims at approving a certain number of restaurants in each city of the project to help with healthy food accessibility across the county. Getting a new restaurant approved by Apr 22, 2023 was not possible. Work with Googies Grill will continue and the goal is to get them approved by May 31, 2023. The next few steps the Blue Zones project can take to address the lack of healthy food in Seaside is to prioritize working with restaurants that have multiple locations, identify restaurant owners who believe in the project, hold surveys at outreach events so the community can voice their opinions on which restaurants they want BZP to work with and finally to collaborate with Gusto\u27s Handcrafted Pizza and Pasta, Chopstix Vietnamese restaurant and The Breakfast club
Preparing Teachers for Integrating Visual Arts for Academic Success of Elementary School Students
Get PDFThe majority of people agree that students’ education should provide them with the essential skills to be successful in the 21st-century workforce. Although these same sets of skills are commonly practiced through the process of making art, art education continues to hold an inferior status in schools. This disconnection raises the question, what has led to the devaluation of art in academics? This senior capstone will explore how teachers are prepared to integrate visual arts into the classroom. Through the use of a literature review, interviews with three in-service teachers, and a survey of students majoring in Liberal Studies at CSUMB, the result findings indicate that there is a lack of adequate teacher preparation and professional development in visual art integration that has contributed to the academic success of elementary school students
Substance Use Education for Youth
Get PDFThe City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services Department offers community members a variety of different activities aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle. One of the locations within the department is the Gene Hoularis and Waldo Rodriguez Youth Center, primarily focusing on youth. Due to a lack of information, it is essential for youth to become well informed about the impact drugs can have on their future. For this project, we raised awareness about substance use through a total of three workshops. The purpose of this project was to allow youth to build on their knowledge regarding substances and guide them towards good decision-making. Based on project results, youth have expressed that the information covered helped them become well informed and would allow them to stay away from substances. Future steps may include an increase in promoting the workshops, which would help attract a higher number of attendees
