Prevention of Mental Health Problems in K-8 Students
This senior capstone research examines the methods being used to prevent mental health problems in K-8 students. Research from Chandra and Minkovitz (2007) shows that due to the lack of knowledge, confidence, and resources, teachers and on-site staff are not able to provide the necessary help to students who need mental health services. Through the use of literature review, interviews with three elementary teachers and three administrative staff, and 30 anonymous student surveys, the result findings indicate that the K-8 school in the Manteca Unified School District (MUSD) currently tackles student mental health issues primarily by onsite counselors and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, as well as by hosting a parent intervention night. However, result findings also indicate students are not comfortable discussing their mental health with the onsite counselors and do not take advantage of the resources currently available to them. It is recommended that by providing students with a safe and comfortable environment with proper resources, early signs of mental health problems could be detected and will eventually enhance the students’ quality of life in the years to come
Success Over Stress Support Group
The Harden Wellness Center is located in Salinas, California on the campus of Harden Middle School. After surveying and interviewing eighth-grade students at Harden Middle School, it was determined that there was a need to provide healthy coping skills for stress and anxiety. The project provided students a place to learn healthy coping skills along with normalizing mental health services among adolescents. In order to engage students and keep them interested each week, focus on a new skill with an activity attached to reinforce the coping skill. By the end of the six weeks, the group started to talk about implementing anti-anxiety methods they were using outside of the group to help them cope with stress and anxiety. By the end of the project, it was obvious to see that all students should be screened every quarter for mental health needs, even if the student does not have a history of needing services from the Wellness Center. Along with this observation, it is also noted that every school district should implement a therapeutic approach to supporting students with their mental health needs
Attention to Attendance at Marina Vista
Marina Vista Arts Elementary school has a high rate of absenteeism among students, which is negatively affecting their education. Problems associated with chronic absenteeism include illness, communication issues between schools and parents, and socioeconomic status. Consequences of chronic absenteeism include being at an academic disadvantage, increased risk of not graduating, and potential involvement with the criminal justice system. The capstone project created an educational flier that standardized the expectations for student attendance and highlights the negative consequences of chronic absenteeism. A database of 50 students were selected for the project with their attendance inputted into a database for tracking. Results of the project concluded with a 3.51% increase of student attendance at the conclusion of the project. Recommendations include continued education for students, families, and the local community in collaboration with local schools, as well as creating workshops and providing support to schools that are understaffed

Spaces Defined by Objects
This is an exploratory written peace that attempts to define spaces, and how objects as well as people define them. The peace takes the viewer through various images, all captured by William Van Nes throughout the United States, and tries to explain meaning, and how we prescribe our own meaning to spaces. This peace will specifically address and explore the concept of defining a space, and what it actually means to define spaces.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/hcom434_spring2023/1022/thumbnail.jp
There\u27s Still a Reason To Lace \u27Em Up
This piece started from a brainstorm around the question: What items did I hold on to in times of uncertainty? For me, the answer was my basketball shoes. During the pandemic, playing basketball was my only remaining tie to the outside world. It helped me cope and continue to feel connected to the world that had all but disappeared.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/hcom434_spring2023/1020/thumbnail.jp
Time of Peace
I decided to do a hand drawn reflection for my in depth piece. The globe is on a clock with a made from a peace symbol. The different color fist represent the diversity we see everyday. The two hands carrying a dove and a grenade represent the balance between peace and destruction.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/hcom434_spring2023/1015/thumbnail.jp
