No full textThis study demonstrates how satellite imagery can reduce the risk of grounding in poorly surveyed waters. Automated shoal detection and satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) were applied to Sentinel-2 imagery for seven grounding sites in the Canadian Arctic. Shoal detection was successful for all sites, and SDB showed depths as shallow as 0.3 m. Proactive use of satellite imagery, even without advanced image processing, could have provided mariners with vital information on the location of uncharted shoals and prevented costly and dangerous accidents. The hydrographic community should accelerate the inclusion of satellite-derived products into the information provided to mariners for safety of navigation.Este estudio demuestra cómo las imágenes por satélite pueden reducir el riesgo de tocar fondo en aguas con levantamientos hidrográficos pobres. Se aplicó la detección automatizada de bajos y la batimetría derivada por satélite (SDB) a las imágenes de Sentinel-2 para siete lugares donde se había tocado fondo en el Ártico canadiense. La detección de bajos fue satisfactoria en todos los casos, y SDB mostró profundidades tan someras como 0,3 m. El uso proactivo de imágenes por satélite, incluso sin un procesamiento avanzado de las imágenes, podría haber proporcionado a los navegantes información vital sobre la ubicación de bajos no cartografiados y haber evitado accidentes costosos y peligrosos. Cultures of Sound Network: The Genesis of an International Alliance
No full textThe Cultures of Sound Network is an international alliance of cultural institutions that develops public engagement projects around music and sound. Since its inception in 2018, the network has used collaborative inquiry to mobilize music and sound knowledge across North America and beyond, serve diverse communities, including Indigenous ones, and bridge divides between museums, universities, cultural organizations, and publics. This article discusses examples of the network’s modus operandi and examines the value, significance, and prospects for sound initiatives of this kind in the 2020s.Le réseau des Cultures of Sound est un regroupement international d’institutions culturelles qui conçoivent des projets publics autour de la musique et du son. Depuis ses débuts en 2018, ce réseau a eu recours à des investigations en collaboration pour mobiliser le savoir relatif à la musique et au son à travers toute l’Amérique du Nord et au-delà, au service de diverses communautés, y compris des communautés autochtones, en créant des ponts entre les musées, les universités, les associations culturelles et les publics. Cet article expose des exemples du modus operandi du réseau et examine la valeur, la signification et les perspectives d’avenir pour les initiatives sonores de ce type dans les années 2020
Vessels and Boats: The Development of the Inshore Mackerel Trade on Prince Edward Island, 1830-1880
No full textUsing direct testimony from those engaged in the 19th-century Gulf of St. Lawrence mackerel fishery, this article suggests that closer examination of the industry’s history challenges both traditional and recent scholarly writing on the fishery. It argues that social and geographical influences led to the development of a shore-based fishery on Prince Edward Island. This fishery was primarily controlled locally and demonstrated an adaptability on the part of Islanders. Their adaptability, however, could ultimately not overcome competition and other external market factors controlling the mackerel trade

No full textIn 2008 Halifax Regional Municipality undertook a major construction project to replace the underground sewer system that carries Freshwater Brook from the Halifax Commons to its outlet at the southeastern end of the Halifax Peninsula. The project was necessary because the existing system did not meet modern standards and the old pipes ran under city blocks and were therefore inaccessible in many places for maintenance and repair. The first part of the project (2008-09) involved installing a modern dual pipe system along a route that crossed the predicted locations of the boundary between the Cunard and Bluestone Quarry formations of the Halifax Group, and the biotite-in and andalusite-in isograds of the contact aureole of the South Mountain Batholith. Bedrock was exposed along much of the excavated trench, which was nearly 10 m deep in many places. Outcrop observations and samples from the trench revealed that the Cunard-Bluestone Quarry contact runs under the Sobeys parking lot, between Fenwick and Queen streets. The andalusite-in isograd in the Cunard Formation can be traced as far as the west end of Fenwick Street. The cordierite-in isograd lies east of the study area, and the biotite-in isograd to the west. The lithology and isograd map for south end Halifax has been updated based on these results. Problems including uncertain subsurface location of the old pipes, contaminated soil, and carbon monoxide migration into residential buildings contributed to significant delays and cost overruns; some of these might have been mitigated with better knowledge of the subsurface geology.La Municipalité régionale de Halifax a entrepris en 2008 un projet de construction d’envergure visant le remplacement du réseau d’égout souterrain acheminant le ruisseau Freshwater du parc municipal de Halifax à son embouchure à l’extrémité sud-est de la presqu’île d’Halifax. Le projet s’avérait nécessaire parce que le réseau existant ne répondait pas aux normes modernes : les vieux tuyaux se trouvaient sous des pâtés de maisons et étaient en conséquence inaccessibles en de nombreux endroits pour l’entretien et les réparations. La première tranche du projet (2008-2009) a comporté l’installation d’un réseau moderne à deux tuyaux franchissant les emplacements prévus de la limite entre les formations de Cunard et de Bluestone Quarry du Groupe de Halifax, ainsi que les isogrades d’apparition de la biotite et de l’andalousite de l’auréole de contact du batholite du mont South. Le substrat rocheux a été dénudé le long d’une vaste part de la tranchée creusée, qui avait près de 10 m de profondeur en nombre d'endroits. Des observations de l’affleurement et d’échantillons de la tranchée ont révélé que la zone de contact de Cunard-Bluestone Quarry s’étendait sous le terrain de stationnement du Sobeys, entre les rues Fenwick et Queen. L’isograde d’apparition de l’andalousite dans la Formation de Cunard peut être retracé jusqu’à l’extrémité ouest de la rue Fenwick. L’isograde d’apparition de la cordiérite se situe à l’est du secteur d’étude et celui de la biotite est à l’ouest. Les intervenants ont mis à jour la carte de la lithologie et des isogrades du quartier sud de Halifax en fonction de ces observations. Divers problèmes, dont l’emplacement souterrain incertain des vieux tuyaux, le sol contaminé et la migration du monoxyde de carbone dans les bâtiments résidentiels, ont contribué à des retards importants et des dépassements des coûts. On aurait pu atténuer certains de ces problèmes en connaissant mieux la géologie de subsurface
Navigating Immigration in an Era of Rising Populism
No full textAnti-immigrant sentiment has been one of the most prominent manifestations of rising populism in industrializedcountries in the last decade. Right-wing populists advocate greater restrictions on immigration, especiallyfrom the Global South. In this perspectives piece, we focus on the United States and the European Unionto discuss how global businesses can more effectively navigate the controversial issue of immigration in anera of rising populism. We look at immigration trends over the last decade, discuss different types of populism,and highlight some key events in the last decade that pointed to its rise. We identify several themes asto how managers can effectively engage with policymakers, including emphasizing the importance of attractingtalent to promote national competitiveness, working with policymakers at different levels, highlighting therole of skilled migrants in promoting trade, investment, and knowledge flows, and promoting integration as akey part of organizational training programs
