    Get PDF
Professional development in Indonesia has been widely researched, with much of the focus on secondary school teachers. Some studies have explored professional development among tertiary education teachers, but research on the professional development of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors in higher education in Indonesia remains limited. This gap is significant, given the crucial role of EFL instructors in preparing future English teachers, which demands exceptional professionalism. This research aimed to explore the factors contributing to the professional development of EFL instructors in higher education in Indonesia. The data for this study were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten EFL instructors (five female and five male) from various universities in Indonesia. The interview questions covered topics such as their views on professional development, efforts to improve themselves, participation in professional development programs and activities, personal initiatives, and institutional support. Each interview lasted between 35 and 45 minutes. The data were analyzed using the MAXQDA tool to identify themes from the interview transcripts. The findings revealed several key themes: (1) efforts for PD (2) EFL instructor beliefs (3) EFL instructors’ efficacy (4) Less institution support, (5) commitment to the job, (5) classroom practice. The study suggests that institutional support for EFL instructors should be enhanced. Professional development programs should be consistently provided and maintained to ensure their effectiveness and sustainability

    Get PDF
Wearable devices, particularly smartwatches, have recently garnered significant consumer interest. However, limited research has explored how consumers’ perceived values influence their intention to continue using this technology. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the perceived values—hedonic, utilitarian, and social—that drive purchase decisions, with a specific focus on the moderating role of switching costs on repurchase intentions in the context of a developing country: Mongolia. Data were collected through an online questionnaire distributed via Google Forms, resulting in 465 usable responses from potential smartwatch users. The partial least squares (PLS) approach was employed to evaluate the proposed hypotheses. The findings indicate that consumers’ purchase decisions are influenced by hedonic, social, and utilitarian values. Furthermore, switching costs were found to significantly moderate both purchase decisions and repurchase intentions. These results offer valuable insights for smartwatch manufacturers and marketers. By understanding the key factors driving purchase and repurchase decisions, industry stakeholders can develop targeted marketing strategies and product features that cater to consumers’ needs, ultimately improving customer retention and increasing market share in the rapidly expanding wearable technology sector

The Relationship between Games, Creativity, and Numeracy Skills in Elementary School Students

    Get PDF
Shifting from handcrafted to digital and factory-made toys has sparked worries about primary students’ fading creativity and numeracy skills. This mixed-methods study explores the relationship between children’s play and their creativity and numeracy achievements. The qualitative strand involved interviews with teachers and traditional toy artisans, capturing cultural practices, learning contexts, and observed skills during play. Qualitative results support these themes, showing that traditional play stimulates verbal interactions related to reasoning and problem-solving, particularly in spatial reasoning and mathematics. The quantitative results indicate that play frequency significantly predicts both creativity (β = 0.62, p < 0.001) and numeracy (β = 0.71, p < 0.001), explaining 78% and 86% of the variance, respectively. Traditional and modern non-digital games have positive effects, whereas digital games have significant negative effects. Path analysis further reveals a significant correlation between creativity and numeracy (r = 0.84, p < 0.001). Concerning the models that consider play type, the results show that traditional play consistently supports both outcomes. Digital play tends to exhibit negative impacts, and modern non-digital play contributes positively, albeit to a lesser extent. The tapestry of both data types deepens the conclusion that play, especially when culturally situated, nurtures cognitive development

Biopolitics and Stunting Treatment: Barriers to Community Participation in Sambas Regency, Indonesia

    Get PDF
Stunting remains a major public health issue in Indonesia, especially in border areas like Sambas Regency, where intervention efforts have seen limited success. This study investigates the biopolitical dimensions of stunting by highlighting the disconnect between national policies and local realities, particularly in community participation and behavioral change. Using a qualitative case study in Lela Village, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Results indicate that low paternal involvement, reliance on traditional medicine, poor health literacy, and smoking habits hinder prevention efforts. State narratives also tend to overburden mothers while neglecting shared responsibility. Biopolitical and gender based approaches to stunting remain underexplored in Indonesia. Stunting is understood here as a complex interaction of power and knowledge that influences public perspectives and government policy. The study calls for a shift from top-down technical fixes to inclusive strategies that promote gender equity, empower communities, and adapt to socio-cultural contexts. It contributes to the discourse on public health governance by advocating participatory, context-sensitive, and transformative solutions for sustainable stunting reduction

Fiqh Reform in the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam: Is it Modernism or Moderatism? A Study of the Hareuta Sihareukat Custom

    Get PDF
The custom of joint property in marriage exemplifies the Fiqh reform during the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam. Some authors link this custom to the issue of women’s equality that strengthened in the 1970s. However, it raises questions about the paradigm that underlies this custom: Did the Acehnese ulema adhere to the same paradigm as modern thinkers? The authors hypothesize that the paradigm underlies this custom is moderate because it moderates between women’s property ownership dimension and the dimension of the family’s living needs. The primary data for this study are legal materials in the form of law books, regulations, and constitutions of Aceh Darussalam Sultanate. Therefore, the authors conducted normative legal research with a historical approach. The authors used Gadamer’s dialogical hermeneutics to moderate the subject and object as a dialogue partner. This study found that Acehnese ulema, who served as chairman of the Supreme Court (Qāḍi Mālik al-’Ādil), was moderate in Aqida, Sharia, and Siyasa, so the moderate paradigm influenced the law system in The Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam. It resulted in the fiqh reform, which means compatibility between the opinions of the ulemas and the needs of the people. It concluded that the fiqh reform carried out by the Acehnese ulema was moderation

    Get PDF
Religious moderation serves as a pillar of unity and diversity, a glue and unifier of the nation. It helps prevent conflicts that may arise due to differences in religious beliefs and practices. This study uses content analysis and survey methods, with data collection through interview techniques, literature studies, and surveys of teachers and students at the Madrasah Aliyah in the city of Bandung. This study aims to determine the moderation material in the Quran Hadith book and the responses of teachers and students to the application of learning materials based on religious moderation. The results of the study indicate that the religious moderation education material at Madrasah Aliyah in the Quran Hadith textbook is more associated with the values contained in the holy texts, as well as the understanding and practice of moderation based on the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah, covering several themes, namely balance (tawazun), religious tolerance (tasamuh), responsible attitude, and maintaining trust. The concept of religious moderation is easy to understand and implement in life as students’ attitudes are more open to accepting opinions and respecting differences. One effort to instill an attitude of religious moderation among students can be made by integrating the values of religious moderation into the teaching materials of the Quran and Hadith

    Get PDF
Pesantren plays a significant role in developing students’ self-regulated learning (SRL) skills, which are reflected in their ability to set learning goals and manage their cognition, motivation, and behavior. However, previous studies did not explore SRL skills among students in pesantren, particularly in those with three secondary education units: MA (Madrasah Aliyah), SMA (Senior High School), and SMK (Vocational School). This study aimed to reveal the average SRL skills of students and their indicators in supporting survival skills (SS) in pesantren. Using a positivistic paradigm and a quantitative approach through survey methods, this research was conducted at Pesantren As-Syifa Al-Khoeriyyah Subang, West Java, Indonesia, involving 99 students from MA, SMA, and SMK levels as samples. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 30 questions and analyzed using ANOVA. The results showed that the average SRL skill scores for MA students were 55.48, for SMA students 60.12, and for SMK students 57.72, with an overall average score of 57.77. The ANOVA significance test value of 0.012 (< 0.05) indicates a significant difference between groups. This study also highlighted that students’ SRL skills, such as social independence, values, and behavior, were shaped through various programs implemented in the pesantren

Political Development through Renewable Energy: The Use of Ex-Mining Land in Indonesia’s New Capital

    Get PDF
In contemporary governance, the relocation of national capital is a recurring phenomenon. This study aimed to analyze the potential for political and developmental advancement through renewable energy in Indonesia’s new archipelagic capital by repurposing former mining sites. An explanatory qualitative method was employed, using internet-based media as the primary means of reporting and online news outlets as the main data sources. The N Capture feature—a web browser plugin designed to collect online materials from websites, social media platforms, and documents such as scientific publications—was used to gather data in Nvivo 12 Plus. The findings indicate that repurposing abandoned mining sites in the archipelagic capital for renewable energy development could yield significant economic, social, and environmental benefits. However, stakeholders—including the public sector, private corporations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and local community—must collaborate to fully realize this potential. The use of abandoned mining lands should be strategically assessed to develop innovative solutions that address contemporary challenges while considering environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic viability

    Get PDF
The issue of zakat fatwa implementation faces challenges in ensuring sharia compliance and effective governance. This study examines zakat fatwa implementation in three institutions: Muhammadiyah Amil Zakat Institute (LAZISMU), Nahdlatul Ulama Amil Zakat Institute (LAZISNU), and the Islamic Dakwah Fund (IDF) of the Council of Indonesian Ulama (MUI). Using a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, the research explores the application of zakat fatwas issued by Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and MUI, their impact on institutional compliance, and the opportunities and challenges involved. Quantitative data from 40 zakat administrators (amil) and qualitative insights from eight key informants were analyzed using regression models, the Public Satisfaction Index (IKM), and thematic qualitative techniques. Results indicate zakat fatwa implementation is “suboptimal”, with an Amil Satisfaction Index of 74.60. Opportunities include digitalization, institutional collaboration, and standardized management, while challenges involve limited skilled human resources, insufficient professional certification, and inadequate fatwa dissemination. The study underscores the need for improved fatwa dissemination, systematic SOP evaluations, and enhanced amil professionalism. These findings contribute to the global discourse on zakat governance by offering insights from Indonesia’s multi-fatwa system, which has implications for similar institutions worldwide.
