Effects of an Environmental Education Intervention on Environmental Sustainability Among Youth in Malaysia
Environmental sustainability issues must be disclosed to youths as early as possible to preserve and conserve the environment through formal and informal education. To date, there needs to be more local studies on interventions that encourage positive and behavioral changes that can improve their understanding, knowledge, attitude, and practices toward environmental sustainability. Environmental education intervention is one of the approaches that can be implemented to achieve this goal. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an environmental education intervention on environmental sustainability among youths. This study was a one-group quasi-experimental study. This study recruited two hundred youths, and the data was collected pre and post-intervention. Respondents in the intervention received an environmental education package (i.e., environmental-based education talk supported with pamphlets and small group discussions). The paired t-test was used to determine the differences between the pre and post-intervention. The study showed a statistically significant difference in pre and post-intervention in understanding, knowledge, attitude, and practices toward environmental sustainability (p < .005). Hence, the environmental education intervention was proven to be effective in increasing environmental sustainability and could serve as an intervention tool among youths in Malaysia to improve environmental protection and conservation
An Mentoring Listening Skills: YouTube Practical Psychology for Enhancing English Competence of Students at University
Listening is one of the language skills that students must master. However, it is difficult for students to master it. Some factors make it difficult for students to master it, and one of them is that the method or media used by lecturers in the teaching and learning process is not suitable or comfortable. This study aimed to determine if the English study program students of BBG University who are taught listening skills through watching YouTube Channel Practical Psychology are more successful than those who are taught listening skills without watching YouTube Channel Practical Psychology. This research employed quantitative methods and a pre-experiment design with a single group: pre-test - post-test. The population of this study was the entire third-semester English department students at BBG University, was 26 students divided into one class. The necessary data was obtained through testing, and the obtained data was analyzed using the N-Gain Score. N-Gain Score was calculated to be 0.41. It indicated a disparity between the students’ listening abilities before being taught via the YouTube Channel Applied Psychology. After they were taught by watching the YouTube Channel Practical Psychology, the difference was 41%. It means that the students’ listening competence increased by 41% after they were taught through watching YouTube Channel Practical Psychology
Symbolic Violence Against Women in Medan’s Patriarchal Culture
The study on symbolic violence against women is limited. There is still a significant degree of suspicion and stigma in society around the notion that women are weak and helpless compared to men and that women are continually the victims of patriarchal symbolic violence in terms of language, social economics, and others. This research aims to investigate how and why symbolic violence is performed against women in patriarchal cultures, the kinds of symbolic violence against women, the determinants of symbolic violence in this instance, and the effects of linguistic-symbolic violence on women in Medan Tembung. This qualitative research included seven individuals between the ages of 15 and 35. Observations and interviews were employed to collect data for this investigation. The acquired data was then examined using sociological methodologies to disclose the field phenomena and interview outcomes precisely. Furthermore, this research employs the theory of Pierre Bourdieu to comprehend symbolic violence in society. This study\u27s results demonstrate that symbolic violence persists in society, particularly in meetings and in the form of language. The results of this research support this concept by providing evidence of symbolic violence in the form of language or particular terminology that women are not permitted to use, although males are permitted to do so, and which seem to be prevalent in daily life
Webtoon’s Effect on Students’ Reading Comprehension at School
This study investigated the effect that employing the Predicting Strategy with Webtoon would have on MTsS Awaliyah students\u27 reading comprehension during the academic year 2021-2022. This study was conducted using a quantitative methodology and a real experimental pretest-posttest control group design. Eighth-grade enrollment was 60 pupils, who were equally distributed between two classes. The samples were comprised of the whole population and were chosen using a simple random selection technique. There were 30 pupils in both the experimental class (VIII-A) and the control class (VIII-B) (VIII-B). The pre-test and post-test each consisted of 20 multiple-choice questions, and they served as the data collection instruments. Using 58 degrees of freedom (df) and a significance threshold of 0.05, a t-test revealed that the value of to was 6,515, and that ttable was 1,673. This equation indicated that to is more than ttable (6,515 > 1,673). According to the study\u27s findings, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) should be accepted, whereas the null hypothesis (Ho) should be rejected. It suggests that the experimental class scored differently than the control class after the therapy was administered. The Predicting Approach with Webtoons has a major impact on students\u27 reading comprehension
Sexual Harassment in Boys: An Overview of Child Victims and Child Perpetrators in Indonesia
There are still few studies on sexual harassment toward boys. In society, there is still a lot of skepticism and stigma about whether boys can be perpetrators or victims of sexual harassment. The purpose of this study was to explore the occurrence of sexual violence towards boys, such as the dynamics of the perpetrators and victims, the motivation of the perpetrators to commit sexual violence, and the impact of sexual violence on victims. This study used a descriptive qualitative method, with 17 subjects aged 0–18. The data collection used a study of documents collected from trial facts in the Directory of Supreme Court Decisions. The data were analyzed by the N-Vivo application for data processing, management, ideas, queries, visualization, and reporting. This study found that imitation was the main trigger for perpetrators to commit sexual harassment. From the victim\u27s side, the impact the victim feels is a feeling of trauma, depression, and sensitivity. The role of the environment and online media needs attention in preventing and handling sexual violence against children
Model of Religious Education for Slow Learner Children in Inclusive Schools in Indonesia
School is a formal institution that is the right place for students to develop their potential. National education aims to provide space and educational materials for every student, including slow learner students. Religious education material is one of the materials that must be provided. This research aimed to describe the learning strategies used by religious teachers to slow learning students. This qualitative research used a narrative approach. There were eight participants: Islamic religion teachers, special guidance teachers and two school principals. Data collection through in-depth interviews and analysis with the stages of data reduction, presentation and interpretation. This research found peer teaching and repetition models to be the main learning models. It was consistent with the character of slow-learner students with below-average cognitive abilities. Slow learner students tend to accept material slowly and repeatedly. They were also more comfortable when being taught by peers because, psychologically, they felt the same age. Meanwhile, the biggest obstacle for slow learner students in learning was limited cognitive ability, unstable concentration power and negative image of parents towards children\u27s abilities. The findings of this study are interesting to be used as a reference for teachers and parents in educating slow learner children
Criminalization in Islamic Penal Code: A Study of Principles, Criminalization Methods, and Declining Variations
This study explores the principles and methods used by the al-Qur\u27an in criminalizing. The method used in this research is a library method with primary data obtained from the al-Qur\u27an and secondary data obtained from the tafsīr books, hadith ahkām, jinayāt books, and literature on criminal law, criminology, victimology, and relevant previous research findings. The result found that the principles used by the al-Qur\u27an in criminalizing an act are the principles of benefit, prevention, material legality, and transcendental principles. Two methods of criminalization are used: (1) the texts of the al-Qur\u27an and the Hadith itself, which state that this action must be punished; (2) determined in one of three ways. (a) al-Qur\u27an and Hadith stipulate that this act is hazardous for society; (b) based on common sense considerations that the act could disturb public order; and (c) the act constitutes a preliminary offense for a more significant and more dangerous offense. Furthermore, it is found that the variant of the ta\u27zīr offense includes offenses that are related to morality, sexual crimes, crimes against religion, crimes against the body, crimes against property, crimes related to family/descent, disturbing public order, environmental crime, fraud and forgery, and traffic offense
The Practicality of Developing a Multi-Split Model Based on the Hands-on-Mind Approach as a Reconstruction of Basic Literacy and Character Values
West Kalimantan is a province in Indonesia with the longest border with foreign countries. Therefore, education in these areas must be paid close attention to so that students can obtain optimal learning competency results and master basic literacy and character values as catalysts for understanding, awareness, and attitudes toward the pillars of national and state life. This study aims to determine the practicality of developing a multi-split model based on the hands-on-mind approach that can be used to reconstruct basic literacy and character values in the border areas of West Kalimantan and Malaysia during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research method used was research and development (R&D). The source of the data in this study was obtained from the results of field trials; thus, the practicality of developing a multi-split model based on the hands-on-mind approach observed by two teachers could be seen. The results of the practicality analysis showed that (1) the implementation of learning using a multi-split model based on a hands-on-mind approach reached an average score of 3.23 with good criteria, (2) student activities got an average score for each activity of at least 3.16 with good criteria and (3) the obstacles experienced by students were not familiar with the pattern of the learning process using this model; consequently several student activities could not run optimally
Analysis of the “Deep Listening” Spiritual Pedagogy Approach in Online Learning to Build Intersubjectivity
Online learning is often complained about as it makes students uncomfortable and inactive in learning activities because they need to meet face-to-face with classmates and teachers. This article explained how in the online learning model, students could feel involved with all learning components even if they were not face-to-face while using the “deep listening” spiritual pedagogy approach. The practice of “deep listening” pedagogy was carried out on students in the General Basic Course lecture class, namely Religious Education, with 35 students. The goal was to encourage student engagement and the ability to connect with all components in the learning classroom. Data were collected through observation and implementation of “deep listening” practice through focus group discussion, then analyzed with a qualitative approach. The result showed that through observation and practice of “deep listening” in the focus of online group discussions, 1) students could convey their inner voice openly and honestly. 2) It can be observed through conversations that there were changes in students’ perceptions about the meaning of beliefs, human nature, religious experiences, relationships with others, and the development of spirituality. 3) It can be observed that students’ ability to engage and feel connected to all components of learning was a meaning of intersubjectivity through opinions and thoughts conveyed in online learning
The Governance of School Operational Assistance (SOA) Funds for Elementary Schools in Medan
This study aimed to test the measurement and structural models of SOA fund governance constructed by participation, transparency, and accountability. A total of 348 respondents were involved in this study consisting, including the headmaster (n=20), teachers (n=76), and parents (n=252). Data were collected using a questionnaire distributed to respondents using Google Forms for four months. Data analysis used confirmatory factor analysis through Partial Least Squares-Path Modeling (PLS-PM), which assisted the Smart PLS. Testing the measurement model using construct validity and internal consistency reliability showed two items (P4-participation and A3-accountability) having loading factors that do not satisfy the criteria. Likewise, both items were excluded from the model, which impacted the acceptance of the model fit. Furthermore, testing the quality of the structural model using the goodness of fit (GoF=0.524) was more significant than 0.36, which meant the quality of the structural model was very strong and significant. The transparency aspect had the most robust coefficient, which signals that everyone regarding the implementation of SOA funds in schools freely obtained the disclosure of financial and academic information. Other scholars can explore the role of the principal, teachers, and parents in making learning successful in schools by optimizing the use of SOA funds
