Melville’s Ahab in Moby Dick and R K Narayan’s Vasu in The Man-eater of Malgudi: A Quest to Enter a “New World”
Utilizing critical literature on Melville and RK Narayan and then reading Moby-Dick (1851) and The Man Eater of Malgudi closely (1961), this article concerns American and Indian works of literature and argues that both writers were among the leading imaginative writers to create niches in terms of philosophy. Both used imagination, symbolism, and spiritual and universal impulses to make the characters and books worth reading. However, both novels portray a quest to enter a “New World” through protagonists Ahab and Vasu, who bring multiple concerns and commit catastrophic blunders. The article sails through a comparative study of the protagonists analyzing the critical factors, such as adventurous and mysterious wanderers, the universe being both godless and purposeless, virtues versus sins, influence and fusion of divergent subjects, their anti-life and anti-nature attitude, intelligence and wisdom and archetype ambitions that lead them to self-destruction. This paper intends to explore the dynamics of the relationship between American and Indian Literature through protagonists Ahab and Vasu’s acquisitive, coseismic, nomadic, and fanatic nature in their quest to enter a “New World” to address aspects that the present time calls for; hence, making both novels great in the twenty-first century
Prosopography of Teachers\u27 Roles as Change Agents in Riau in the Twentieth Century
This article analyzes the factors that have contributed to developing teachers\u27 roles as agents of change in Riau in the 20th century. Teachers have played a strategic role in the past and have become an essential group in social and political life. Using the Historical Method and the prosopography approach, 25 biographies of Riau Province figures and the results of interviews with four informants were collected, evaluated, and analyzed. The research findings indicated that the role of teachers in Riau in the 20th century was crucial, and teachers were a productive group that gained trust, recognition, and respect during various periods of struggle in Indonesia. Teachers were able to maximize their role as agents of change due to the following factors: (1) their presence had become an integral part of the cultural and historical journey of Riau society; (2) teachers succeeded in developing their social competence, and their social role became ingrained in the collective memory of society; (3) teachers were intellectual elites with better family backgrounds, education, and experience than the general population; and (4) the dedication, altruistic attitude, and willingness of teachers were reflected in their personalities
Blended Learning Modality in Teaching Statistics in a Graduate Program of a State University in the Philippines
Graduate students commonly experience apprehension towards statistics courses, leading to lower achievement and negative perceptions of the subject. This mixed-methods research study aimed to explore the effects of blended learning on graduate students\u27 achievement and perception of statistics in the Master of Arts in Education program. Blended learning combines online and face-to-face learning modalities. The study included 67 participants who completed tests for parametric and non-parametric statistics and 12 who underwent interviews. Results showed that students showed mastery of specific statistical topics, particularly correlation and regression tests and tests of difference with paired and independent samples. The students attributed their success to blended learning, which promotes flexibility, ease of learning statistics, independent learning, and motivation. Regardless of the field of specialization, students\u27 scores in statistics were similar. However, challenges such as internet connection, software use, and technicalities of concepts and software like SPSS were reported. This study suggests that blended learning is beneficial for improving graduate students\u27 achievement and perception of statistics and that proper support and guidance are needed to address the challenges of this learning modality
Religiosity: Conflict Resolution in the Hikayat Prang Cumbok
This study interpreted the religiosity aspect of the Hikayat Prang Cumbok as a method of resolving social and ethnic conflicts in Aceh. What were the problems explored by the value of religiosity that caused the emergence of social conflicts in Aceh, and what concepts of religiosity were the alternative resolutions for resolving these social conflicts? The data collection method used was the manuscript study method. The data was taken from the text of the Hikayat Prang Cumbok because this saga is powerful in telling the reality of social conflict in Aceh. The data were analyzed in descriptive qualitative. The results of the study showed that the aspect of religiosity that appears in the Hikayat Prang Cumbok can be seen in three forms: (1) social religiosity, (2) divine religiosity, and (3) universal religiosity. The religiosity aspect of conflict resolution in this saga is based on reasons of faith and morality. Aqeedah is related to the relationship with Allah (hambluminallah), while morality is related to the relationship between humans (hambluminannas) and humans and the universe. From these three things, it can be seen that morality towards humans and the universe cannot be separated from morality towards God
Virtual Learning and Memory Dissonance
This study aimed to find out declarative memory recalls during online classes. Using a qualitative approach, the instruments used were simple and difficult word-sets. The data were collected through Zoom and WhatsApp platforms and later analyzed using interactive analysis. The results revealed two dissonances encountered: Informational Loss and Built-Up Dissonance. Initially, in the simple-word set, the majority of the students encountered Informational Loss 74 times (after 30 seconds) increasing to 97 times (after 30 minutes). In difficult word sets, it occurred 144 times, increasing to 154 times within identical spans. Regarding Built-Up Dissonance, it occurred 19 times (after 30 seconds), decreasing to 13 times (after 30 minutes) in simple word sets, and 27 times (after 30 seconds), increasing to 30 times (after 30 minutes) in difficult word sets. Surprisingly, it was found that in the recall test, linguistic buffering was generally employed instead of visual buffering. This finding helps teachers understand that virtual learning prompts need to be accompanied by activities involving procedural memory to minimize dissonances
The Impact of Regulation on Islamic Financial Institutions Toward the Monopolistic Practices in the Banking Industrial in Aceh, Indonesia
The ratification of Aceh regulation (Hereafter called Qanun) Number 11 of 2018 concerning Islamic Financial Institutions (Hereafter called Qanun LKS) has provided special rights for Islamic banking institutions, while non-Islamic banking institutions are not permitted to run their business in the province. At the same time, the central Government also decided to merge three state-owned Islamic banks, namely BNI Syariah, BRI Syariah, and Mandiri Syariah, to become Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI). These policies have potentially violated Law on Antitrust, especially in Aceh Province. This article aimed to analyze whether the local Government\u27s policy in enacting the Qanun LKS and consolidating the BSI is part of monopoly practices and unfair business competition in the banking sector in the Aceh region. This research was classified as normative qualitative research, where data was obtained from secondary sources, such as laws, books, journals and related studies. The results showed that the enactment of Qanun LKS has restricted conventional banking from expanding its business in the region. In addition, the Government’s policy to consolidate three state-owned Islamic banks, which control more than seventy-five of the market share in Aceh province, was considered contrary to the law on the Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices and Unfair Business Competition Number 5 of 1999

Settlement of Islamic Sharia Violations in the Perspective of Teungku Dayah and Local Wisdom Values on the West Coast of Aceh
The implementation of Islamic Sharia in Aceh has experienced dynamics since it was first implemented in early 2000—the presence of pro and contra attitudes from the community towards the interpretation and existence of Islamic Sharia. As a result, a model for resolving sharia violations based on local values often emerges. This study departs from the central question of why the people of Aceh often choose local deals in determining several breaches of Islamic law in society. This study seeks to analyze the resolution of violations of Islamic law in the border areas of Aceh with local consensus values. The phrase border Aceh refers to a multi-identity place (ethnicity and religion). This study combines two concepts between local wisdom and Islamic law. The research method uses a qualitative approach with grounded research. The study results show that people who live on the border of Aceh, especially several districts on the West Coast of Aceh, often choose a local (non-Sharia) approach in cases of violations of Islamic Sharia. Settlements with local values are considered more readily accepted by the community. Interestingly, this study found that the role of local wisdom can also reduce the number of violations of Islamic law in the border communities of Aceh
The Issues of Land Tenure in Mixed Marriage
One of the problems in mixed marriages of different nationalities is joint property. Most mixed-married couples do not make property separation agreements because they are unaware that the Marriage Law governs them. The absence of a marriage agreement results in a mix of assets, which means that foreigners own half of the joint property. The provisions in the land law/ UUPA state that foreigners are prohibited from having land rights except for usufructuary rights and rental rights. This study applied the normative legal research method with a statutory and case-based approach. This study showed that if mixed marriage actors did not have a property separation agreement, Indonesian citizens\u27 land rights ownership status was equal to that of the foreigners. Second, jurisprudence still required a separation of properties in mixed marriages. The agreement could be made before, during, or after the marriage. Third, marriage institutions could conduct legal smuggling to obtain land rights in Indonesia through borrowing names (nominees), usually carried out in an unregistered marriage
