WAS IT A ONE-MAN SHOW?
It was 2nd March 1992, when I entered my office. Everything was the same but I felt a silence in the atmosphere and my colleagues were busy in discussion with each other in a manner that I have not seen before in my whole working experience of 8 years. I came to my cabin and looked at the table clock that was again saying to me: “Yes! You are right on time, 5 minutes before 9:00 amâ€. My mind was again struck with the fact that why am I feeling so different today? And what is the reason behind this deadly silence in the atmosphere? Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder I turned around and it was none other than my friend and my colleague, an intelligent engineer from our Research and Development department. He was a friend, one of the four in the office, who were of the same batch of NED University
‘IDENTITY AND VIOLENCE: THE ILLUSION OF DENSITY’ BY AMARTYA SEN 215pp, ALLEN LANE, 2006
Amartya Sen, Professor of Economics at Harvard and a Nobel laureate, recalls his memories when as a child he witnessed an unknown man stumbling into the garden of his parents’ house, bleeding heavily and asking for water. Sen shouted for his parents, and his father took the man to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. The victim was a Muslim day-laborer who had been stabbed by Hindus during the riots that occurred in Bengal in the last years of the British Raj. Sen continues to be not only horrified but also baffled by the communal violence he witnessed at that time. As he puts it in ‘Identity and Violence’: “Aside from being a veritable nightmare, the event was profoundly perplexing.†Why should people who have lived together peacefully suddenly turn on one another in years of violence that cost hundreds of thousands of lives? How could the poor day-laborer be seen as having only one identity – as a Muslim who belonged to an “enemy†community – when he belonged to many other communities as well? “For a bewildered child,†Sen writes, “the violence of identity was extraordinarily hard to grasp. It is not particularly easy for a still bewildered elderly adult.â
HYBRID SYSTEM OF SIMPLE EXPONENTIAL SMOOTHING AND NEURAL NETWORK FOR KSE100 INDEX
This study deals with application of Hybrid forecasting systems to formulate simple exponential smoothing model for KSE 100 index daily share price data. We used 7 days ahead forecasts for daily share price of KSE100 index data. This study is divided into two phases. In the first phase of the study we compared ANN model with SES and found that ANN model gives better forecasting performance then SES model. In the second phase of the study we developed a hybrid system of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Simple Exponential Smoothing (SES) models represented as ANN SES for KSE100 index daily share price data. Empirical results support our proposed hybrid system (ANN SES)
STIGLITZ, JOSEPH E. MAKING GLOBALIZATION WORK, (2006) ALLEN LANE, LONDON
‘Making Globalization Work’ is Joseph Stiglitz’ sequel to ‘Globalization and its Discontents’ (published four years ago) which became a runaway cult classic selling over a million copies world wide. How many copies will the sequel sell is anybody’s guess Considering that the sequel was published about six months back and not many people including academics (at least in Pakistan) seem to know about its existence, we can safely say that the sequel will not be able to match the runaway success of ‘Globalization and its Discontents’

OCCUPATIONAL STRESS AND COPING MECHANISM TO INCREASE JOB SATISFACTION AMONG SUPERVISORS AT KARACHI PHARMACEUTICALS
This research explores the extent of stress and coping mechanism, in pharmaceuticals based in Korangi and other industrial areas in Karachi. The research is based on a previous study conducted by MA Khan (2006). The findings substantiate the view that coping mechanism increases job satisfaction of supervisors in the sampled firms. The design of the research is based on the measurement of the Organizational Stress Index. The data collected and analyzed is both from national and multinational pharmaceutical companies.Major causes of job stress have been identified as task demand, role demand and organizational structure. In Korangi area there is no significant difference in overall stress and job satisfaction levels between national and multinational pharmas. In the non Korangi sample job satisfaction is higher and job stress level in the multinationals is lower than in national pharmas
THE CONVERGENCE CRITERIA AND THE SAARC COMMON CURRENCY
These included cross-country standard deviations of call money rates, consumer price indices, real exchange rates, growth rates of foreign exchange reserves, growth rates of real volume of trade, growth rate of real relative volume of trade and the growth rates of real per capita GDP. None of the selected variables show signs for convergence of over the whole period of 1990s through 2000s. However, for the period of 2000s most of the economic indicators show signs of convergence. This suggests emerging signs for the prospects of common currency in SAARC region. The study, however, concludes that non-economic factors must also be considered seriously before making a serious move towards monetary union in the region
MARKET SNAP SHOT: A SURVEY FOR MEASURING BRAND IMAGE (LOCALLY ASSEMBLED MOTOR CYCLE)
Previous issues contained the brand equity based on Keller’s model of brand equity. From this and subsequent issues, we will present brand image based on Yound & Rubicam model. The determinants of Keller’s model as illustrated in previous issues were Awareness, Usage, Judgment, Performance and Imagery. Comparatively, the determinants of Young & Rubicam model of brand image are different. They are. Brand Differentiation. Brand Relevance. Brand Esteem. Brand Knowledge.Brand image is defined as the consumer perception of a brand and is measured as the brand associations held in the consumer memory. Determining or evaluating the brand’s image needs to take into consideration the customer’s levels of involvement with the category
THE POSSIBILITY OF META-HISTORY
This paper evaluates the post modernist critique of Enlightenment rationality. It argues that the universal claims of Enlightenment epistemology have been effectively deconstructed. However, a universal rationality is possible and Imam Ibn Khaldun’s work on history provides a basis for explications of universal rationality
