A Modern Look At The Banco De’ Medici: Governance And Accountability Systems
The richness and the importance of Florence during the 14th and 15th centuries are well known all around the world. However only few people know that behind this richness there was a banking group - Banco de’ Medici - managed similarly to a nowadays bank colossus. This paper presents an analysis of the governance and accountability systems of this bank. Based both on precious documents of the Florence State Archive and on the existing literature, this paper offers an in-depth study of one of the earliest examples in the world of a bank holding company. In order to understand both the true nature of the Banco de’ Medici group and the links between holdings and subsidiaries, the governance and the accounting records of the main headquarters in Florence and the Lyon branch were investigated. This article contributes to literature shedding new light on the structure of this important bank, the relationship between the holding company and its subsidiaries and on the relationship between its majority and minority shareholders
What Is The Impact Of Job Burnout Antecedents On Georgia Nursing Home Administrators?
Retaining effective and qualified nursing home administrators is becoming a daunting task. With the increase of elderly people in America, the nursing home industry is being forced to address the leadership crisis in the industry. Participants in the study were licensed nursing home administrators (N = 363) who are employed in the state of Georgia. 141 completed surveys were returned for a response rate of 38%. The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of job burnout antecedents: workload, control, rewards, community, fairness, and values on Georgia nursing home administrators?
Communicating Wave Energy: An Active Learning Experience For Students
We have conducted an education project to communicate the wave energy concept to high school students. A virtual reality system that combines both hardware and software is developed in this project to simulate the buoy-wave interaction. This first-of-its-kind wave energy unit is portable and physics-based, allowing students to conduct a number of hands-on activities. This system is the core component of an educational experience that integrates demonstration and hands-on learning, with an aim of introducing the wave energy conversion process to students in an interactive environment. Presentations have been made at two different high schools with diverse student populations, and students involved in this project rated very positively about their learning experience. As revealed by their feedback, the virtual environment and its combination with the hardware are the most important factors that help students to appreciate the knowledge in the wave energy conversion process
Effects Of Web-Based Interactive Modules On Engineering Students’ Learning Motivations
The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of a newly developed modules, Interactive Web-Based Visualization Tools for Gluing Undergraduate Fuel Cell Systems Courses system (IGLU), on learning motivations of engineering students using two samples (n1=144 and n2=135) from senior engineering classes. The multivariate analysis results revealed that the participants had a significant increase in their learning motivation after the treatment with the IGLU modules. This result was cross-validated with the two samples, in which the motivation mean posttest scores are significantly higher than the mean pretest scores, systematically (Sample 1: the mean score is increased by 2.09 [.32, 3.87] points, p = .021; Sample 2: the mean score is increased by 1.38 [.14, 2.61] points, p = .029). With the use of instructional technology prevailing in current university courses, the education initiative of the IGLU system and the assessment of its impact on student learning motivation provide us information to improve the modules to serve a more diverse student body. It will greatly help the development of engineering educational curriculum. With regards to the statistical inference, it is desirable to conduct further studies with a quasi-experiment control group design to assess the program effect focusing on student learning and its associations with student learning motivations and learning styles
The Flipped Classroom: A Twist On Teaching
The traditional classroom has utilized the “I Do”, “We Do”, “You Do” as a strategy for teaching for years. The flipped classroom truly flips that strategy. The teacher uses “You Do”, “We Do”, “I Do” instead. Homework, inquiry, and investigation happen in the classroom. At home students participate in preparation work including watching videos, PowerPoint’s, and completing readings. After completing the preparation work, students arrive in class ready to start solving problems, analyzing text, or investigating solutions. The flipped classroom is fairly new in the teaching field as a strategy for teaching. It has been used by teachers from elementary school to graduate school. As with most strategies, the flipped classroom has a variety of ways to implement in the classroom. This article is a case study of the flipped classroom. It reviews and provides research on the implementation of the flipped classroom. In addition, the article provides a variety of implementation methods and tools to be utilized in a flipped classroom. As with all teaching strategies there are advantages and disadvantages to the flipped classroom which are explained as well

Consumer Satisfaction And Stock Price Behavior: A Case Of Diminishing Returns
This study investigates stock price behavior of firms with differing levels of customer satisfaction as measured by American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) scores. Using a fixed effects regression approach, it looks at the association between stock price changes and ACSI scores, total assets, total liabilities, and total revenues for sixty-four firms over a three-year period and discovers a marked difference between stock price changes for high- and low-scoring companies, indicating possible decreasing marginal returns for investments in customer satisfaction

iSTAR First Light: Characterizing Astronomy Education Research Dissertations In The iSTAR Database
There is widespread interest among discipline-based science education researchers to situate their research in the existing scholarly literature base. Unfortunately, traditional approaches to conducting a thorough literature review are unduly hindered in astronomy education research as the venues in which scholarship is reported are fragmented and widely dispersed across journals of varying disciplines. The international STudies of Astronomy education Research (iSTAR) online repository is the result of a concerted international community effort to collect and categorize existing research from peer-reviewed journal articles, dissertations/theses, and grey literature. In a “first light” survey of over 300 U.S. dissertations, we find: (i) work in AER dates back to 1923; (ii) the number of extant dissertations is far greater than anticipated; (iii) research methods definitions have evolved; and (iv) most work has studied participants’ broad knowledge rather than specific learning targets. The surprisingly wide breadth of rarely cited research motivates us to collect more AER from across international and cross-disciplinary sources
Defining Postsecondary Degrees In The 21st Century
The competition for jobs in the 21st century is increasingly being driven by defining postsecondary learning in light of new and complex environments. To succeed, students must be prepared with knowledge to compete in these environments. Historically, higher education has defined these requirements in their own terms, often through learning outcomes specific to a course, degree or discipline. Given the recent attention toward the accountability of postsecondary education in the United States, a challenge facing our colleges and universities is defining the learning in a common language that is transparent and easily understood by all stakeholders regardless of a degree. The Lumina Foundation’s (2011) Degree Qualification Profile (DQP) is one way to accomplish this through five learning areas. This article will discuss how one institution adopted the DQP in the School of Professional Studies and quantified the five learning areas and meaning of its degrees. This study will discuss how three programs (undergraduate and graduate) identified and categorized the five learning areas of the DQP in the degrees, quantified the results, and used them in the assessment process for continuous improvement
