The Bus Decision: A Case Study Employing Capital Budgeting And Creative Thinking

    Get PDF
This paper presents a case whose setting is a regional university situated approximately twenty-five miles away from a community.  The community is home to a significant number of the university’s faculty, staff, and students.  The university is asked to provide a commuter bus to transport people to and from the community.  The university, in turn, approaches the community municipal bus service asking if it (the municipal bus service) could provide the requested route.  The case incorporates cash flow management decision making including: (1) identifying necessary information for the analysis, (2) identifying appropriate analytical tools for the analysis, and (3) performing the analysis.  This case is appropriate for first year graduate students, as well as upper level undergraduate business students.  The case is designed to be taught in one class hour and is expected to require two hours of outside preparation by the students

New Product Launch For Eagle Brand: Marketing Management Case Study – A And B

    Get PDF
This two-part case study provides a realistic, thought-provoking, and mildly entertaining venture into the world of new product launches.  Structured questions are posed at the end of each case, with suspense and information building from Case A to B.Case A asks whether and how to champion a new product launch internally, while Case B additionally explores how to sell the idea externally with a marketing plan.  Both case studies are intended for undergraduate marketing or management classes.Ambitious, young Abbie MacFeldon joined a consumer packaged goods company as Brand Manager of its biggest brand, Eagle shoe care. She identifies the need for a new product, a line extension within her brand – a mature brand in need of new life.  Her manager applauds her initiative but says this idea was tried before and failed. The reader learns information about the market, brand, consumer, and company through historical and current data, employee bios, and meetings between Abbie and her colleagues. The reader is asked whether Abbie may have a big idea after all, and if so, how it should be marketed.  To make these decisions, readers evaluate external factors (market, competition, consumer, trends) and internal factors (strategic fit, brand image, cost, feasibility, resources).  Furthermore, the case provokes the reader to think about how a brand manager can overcome initial rejection, build and motivate a team, and convince top management. The case explores the role of company culture, including age, gender, and tradition, and how the young female protagonist can address these

A Case Study: Using The Dupont Approach For Formulating Managerial Decisions

    Get PDF
This case introduces a unique approach to financial statement analysis that centers on managerial decision-making as the locus for student analysis. Rather than grouping ratios into traditional categories, such as liquidity, asset efficiency, profitability, insolvency and market ratios, ratios are grouped into operating, investing and financing decision-making areas. Students deepen their understanding of a firm’s strengths and weaknesses through a process of “drilling-down” into the three decision-making domains. The analysis begins with an examination of ROE using the Dupont analysis which provides a useful framework for focusing on the three core managerial decision making activities.  The case is constructed using real world information extracted from 10K reports and from recent company announcements. It can be used at the undergraduate (400) or graduate level. It is most suitable for a course in Financial Statement Analysis, or a course in Corporate Financial Management/Corporate Finance. The basics of financial statement analysis are necessary to successfully navigate the case

Open-Market Repurchases, Firm Quality, And Discouraging Short Sellers

    Get PDF
Announcing an open-market repurchase (OMR) is presented as a potential tool for managers to discourage short selling in their firm’s stock.  Empirical testing determines the relation that abnormal short selling that follows an OMR announcement has with abnormal returns during the announcement period and announcing firm quality. Results show that post-announcement abnormal short sales decrease with positive abnormal returns during the OMR announcement period but that announcing firm quality is unrelated to the level of post-announcement abnormal short sales. Therefore, announcing an OMR may be an effective tool to discourage short sales in a firm’s stock independent of firm quality because abnormal returns around an OMR announcement tend to be positive and short sellers do not appear to distinguish among announcing firms based on firm quality.

English Language Learning Strategies Reported By Advanced Language Learners

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present study is to investigate effective English language learning strategies (LLSs) employed by successful language learners. The participants in this study were 20 student interpreters enrolled in the graduate school of interpretation and translation in Korea. Data on LLSs were collected through unstructured essay writing, a method employed to encourage participants to freely reflect on their language learning experiences and report what strategies and study methods helped them develop a high level of English proficiency. Qualitative data analysis produced several findings related to the use of learning strategies. Specifically, metacognitive strategies, such as disciplined approach to language learning and monitoring of progress, and cognitive strategies, such as reading-aloud and text analysis, were frequently mentioned as effective strategies. In addition, a number of participants emphasized the importance of conscious attention to language input during language learning activities. Testimonies of advanced English language learners in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context suggest that learner autonomy manifested in self-regulated learning activities may be crucial for successful foreign language learning. These and other findings are discussed with respect to their pedagogical implications for strategy-based instruction in English education

Ten Years Of Latin-American Journal Of Astronomy Education RELEA: Achievements And Challenges For International Astronomy Education Development

    Get PDF
This study reviews 10 years of Latin-American Journal of Astronomy Education (RELEA), showing that the journal has become a valuable resource for publishing and highlights its pathway as scholarly journal. Furthermore, it is also a call to astronomy education specialists to consolidate their efforts considering similar journals worldwide. Publishing policies of the RELEA and their context are presented in relation to submission, refereeing and publication. The 75 articles published in 18 editions are analyzed and classified. The results showed an acceptance rate of 60.2%; an average of 7.5 articles per year/4.2 per issue. RELEA´s authors are mostly based in Brazil (81.3%); articles target chiefly a school level (university education: 28.0%, high school: 28.0%); their main study focus is learning and teaching (34.7%) and general astronomy content (33.3%). Our results show that compared to other Brazilian journals of education, RELEA had twice as much astronomy articles. In the international scene there has been about a half of astronomy education research, but twice of astronomy in science education research. The challenges related to improve the article submission are discussed: how to increase their number, the submission of Latin American countries, and how to bring in the issues and subjects not addressed until now. It is also encouraged graduate studies, new lines of research in astronomy education, and advertising the journal in universities and schools for professors and teachers. Finally, future possibilities are mentioned given the International Astronomical Union’s development programs

    Advantages of JAESE’s Open-Access Strategy

    Get PDF
There has been considerable debate in recent years—some well informed and others not so well informed—about the advantages and disadvantages of publishing in online, open-access journals as compared to traditional, subscription-based, print journals.  For many professional societies, traditional, subscription-based, page-charge funded, print journals have served as an important service that societies can enthusiastically provide to their members, as well as provide societies with a healthy stream of financial revenue.  At the same time as providing revenue to run a society, society members have been able to provide important service to the broader professional community by publishing their own scholarship and conducting peer reviews of others’ research.  By far, the majority of a journal’s cost has been born by libraries paying hefty subscription fees

Evaluating Student Perceptions of Course Delivery Platforms

    Get PDF
In this paper we evaluate effectiveness of course delivery mode on three dimensions: values, networking opportunities and learning. While students and their future employers are two important customers for the business program, we focus on the perception of students regarding the effectiveness of course delivery mode on program performance. The three dimensions are evaluated based on a questionnaire survey administered to business program students at several universities. We present the results of statistical analysis and draw conclusions based on the results.

Perceptions Of Customers Regarding Their Expectations Of Service Quality In South African Full-Service Restaurants

    Get PDF
Full-service restaurants serve different types of customers with preconceived ideas about what they want and expect to receive from the restaurant. During the dining experience, each customer experiences the service differently and subconsciously evaluates the experience differently. The purpose of this research is to determine the expectations and perceptions of customers regarding service quality sub-dimensions at Full-Service Restaurants (FSRs).  A self-administered survey of employees at a tertiary academic institution revealed that waiter professionalism, lack of individual attention, long waiting periods and stock-outs in FSRs are the most important concerns when it comes to the expectations of service quality. The findings of this study analysed a demographic profile (gender, age, home language, highest education qualification, LSM groups) and it was found that demographic category groups differ in the way that they perceive service quality. The study reveals that males tend to be less critical than women, LSM 9 respondents are less critical than LSM 10 respondents and respondents with an undergraduate degree or less are less critical than respondents with a post-graduate degree. The study also reveals a strong correlation between service quality and customer satisfaction. Recommendations include that management must focus on pricing strategies, strategic marketing, waiter training and the flow of communication between the restaurant and the customer. The recommendations made in this study will assist management of FSRs to understand the significance of high-quality service and to implement the required levels of service quality. With this knowledge, the management of FSRs can be assured of a satisfied customer and a competitive offering
