Transformation, Sustainability and Transmission of Values Among French Language Teachers: A Case Study of Narratives by“ Péka” Participants

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to clarify the process of transformation in “informal” teacher communities that sustains their existence and identify the values given priority to assure sustainability of these communities. We analyzed the annual reports published by “Péka”, an informal community for French language teachers, and interviewed its members. Results show its process of transformation is based on dialogue in designing activity, because of the equal status of its members and their selfdirectedness, which are then transmitted to newcomers. These results suggest that, to form and develop a teacher community, it is important to construct and reconstruct a dialogical and collaborative relationship by transmitting common values in its process of transformation.departmental bulletin pape

On the“ Whole Picture” and“ Whole Image” of a Kyoto Landscape: From a Perspective of Environmental Design

    Get PDF
Often discourse on landscape proceeds without reference to its background, namely the environment including things in their landscape. If the spatiotemporal boundary of the environment is made explicit it is referred to as“ the whole landscape picture.” In the case of Kyoto, its landscape picture would include descriptions accompanying the “picture” with which a viewer can convey to an“ other,” because it exists exterior to the“ viewer.” A rigorous reflection on the term“ whole” necessarily poses the question as to whether a speaker, as the viewer, is included in the whole landscape. A viewer must look at a landscape “in” the landscape itself. The whole landscape picture then arises from within the viewer as a“ landscape image” of Kyoto city, for example. In this case, it is logical to claim that the viewer cannot convey it to an “other,” because the viewer tries to do so while the image is an internal entity. A set of landscape elements is not the sum whole of the landscape. If in turn these are pictured, however, then the elements are given relationships with one another or “relatedness” among a corpus of elements. This action has the effect of transforming the set into an ensemble, which results in more than the sum of the elements, giving each particular element its locus in the picture. This paper attempts to illustrate this reflective thought process by using described and visual landscape elements of Kyoto.departmental bulletin pape

A Study on the Being of Leadership: With Special Reference to “Greatness for the Masses”

    Get PDF
To fully understand Osaka Sangyo University’s foundational principle—Greatness for the Masses—I propose the following three points. First, there is no inherent contradiction in the overall concept of “Greatness for the Masses,” as it is a combination of the concepts of “greatness” and “for the Masses.” This is consistent with today’s popular Servant Leadership theory that originated from a combination of “servant” and “leader.” Second, this study defines leadership as having the capability and integrity to influence society. According to this definition, everyone has the responsibility to influence society. Third, this study argues that the essence of leadership is defined by how leaders influence society. This approach categorizes leaders as bad leaders and great leaders, depending on whether their influence on society is bad or great. Therefore, I argue that the slogan “Greatness for the Masses” reflects the educational spirit of Osaka Sangyo University, as the university nurtures great leaders by helping them to develop a dream and vision that will allow them to influence society. It also teaches them how to not only take care of themselves but also contribute to the welfare of the Masses even though doing that may require self-sacrifice.departmental bulletin pape

Issues and Countermeasures in Higashiosaka City Concerning “The 2022 Production Green Space Problem”

    Get PDF
In the three major metropolitan areas of Japan, some of the agricultural land within urbanized areas are preserved as “production green spaces” under the Production Green Law amended in 1992. In 2022, which marks 30 years since the 1992 amendment, farmers owning production green spaces can request a city office to purchase their land. There is great concern that in 2022 purchase requests will be overwhelming. This possibility is referred to as the Seisan ryokuchi nisen-nijyuni-nen mondai (the 2022 production green space problem). In this paper, I investigate the intentions of production green space owners in Higashiosaka City, Osaka prefecture. I also examine the countermeasures proposed by Higashiosaka City. Results of the former predict that purchase requests for 16 hectares out of the 115 hectares of production green spaces in the city will be issued. Concerning the latter, three possible countermeasures are under consideration by Higashiosaka City. One is for the city office to purchase the land and develop it into a park area. A second is for the city office to take ownership of these production green spaces and operate “citizen farms” for its urban residents. A third measure is for the city office to create a “farmland bank” that effectively introduces farmers wishing to lend farmland and citizens who desire to borrow farmland.departmental bulletin pape
