“Contact Situations” and Their Contribution to a Shift towards Multicultural Symbiosis in Japanese Society: A Discussion Focusing on Possible Areas of Research

    Get PDF
As the multicultural reality in Japanese society becomes increasingly evident, future research on “contact situations” involving Japanese must move past the present preoccupation with defining the characteristics of native and non-native speakers. In short, we argue that the time has come for research to inquire from the perspective of building a multicultural symbiotic society in Japan. In this study, we carry out a meta-analysis of the research on contact situations published in the past five years and evaluate the potential for research on contact situations to contribute to Japanese society’s rapid shift toward multicultural symbiosis. By exploring the changes in, and future outlook of, research on contact situations, we consider how the results of such research can be leveraged to benefit society while also offering concrete proposals for ways research on contact situations can contribute to society.departmental bulletin pape

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of self-management for developing basic social skills on classroom performance among undergraduate students in Japan. We conducted two studies. In the first study, 782 undergraduate students completed a questionnaire on behavioral intentions of self-management for developing basic social skills. Factor analysis revealed four factors of self-management: development, prevention, recovery, and cooperative relationships. In the second study, 373 undergraduate students attending an educational psychology class completed three questionnaires regarding (a) behavioral intention of self-management for developing basic social skills, (b)autonomous motivation, and (c) student apathy, respectively. In addition, we examined students’ performance in the educational psychology class. Results indicated that preventive self-management and identified motivation which was the one of the four subscales on autonomous motivation, partly predicted students’ class attendance and passing rate.departmental bulletin pape

Dublin Castle, 1801-1922: the structure of the Irish administration

    Get PDF
The Act of Union of 1800 united Ireland to be part of the United Kingdom. In the case of Ireland, however, it was governed as an English colony with a Lord Lieutenant installed at the top of the Irish administration, Dublin Castle. This study examines the Irish administration during the period from the Act of Union to 1922, when twentysix counties of southern Ireland became the Irish Free State, a dominion of the British Commonwealth. During the period focused on here, the Irish executive included the Lord Lieutenant, the Chief Secretary, the Lord Chancellor, the Attorney General and the Solicitor General. The Chief Secretary was appointed by the British government, who often was a member of the British cabinet. While the Parliament sat the Chief Secretary resided in London. During his absence from Dublin, it was the Under Secretary who was given full responsibility over the administration. The Lord Lieutenant and the Chief Secretary together with the British Home Secretary, decided matters of Irish government policy. Since it was the British government that appointed the Lord Lieutenant and the Chief Secretary, in substance the Irish administrative body remained under the control of the British.departmental bulletin pape

The Relationship between the Function of Autobiographical Memory and Achievement Motivation

    Get PDF
This study examined the relationship between the function of autobiographical memory and achievement motivation. Two hundred and twenty participants completed the Japanese version of the Thinking About Life Experiences( TALE) scale, a scale for measuring achievement motive, and the Centrality of Event Scale (CES). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was conducted on the models. The results revealed that the self and directive functions of the autobiographical memory were positively related to the CES, and the CES was positively related to personal need achievement in the scale for measuring achievement motive. The results suggest that the function of autobiographical memory plays a significant role in achievement motivation.departmental bulletin pape

Local Participation Level and Empowerment in Community-Based Tourism : A Theoretical Survey

    Get PDF
Bringing communities onboard the flying-high tourism ship arose along-with the benign environmentalism of the post structural era. However, the issues of socio-economic justice and environmentalism conceived in a way that it was better off with community participation turns out naive unless the real stakeholders are on the top notch of the decision-making process. The participation level of a community’s stakeholders in a community-led tourism model and how it relates with community empowerment is discussed.departmental bulletin pape
