Get PDFDo all women experience a labor “double burden”? Are women responsible for domestic tasks in all households? What explains variation in patterns of distribution of household labor across families? In this article, I approach these questions from the perspective of two opposing theoretical approaches: the New Home Economics framework, and the Social Capital or sociological framework. I test the validity of these two frameworks with data from the Spanish Fertility and Family Survey of 1995. The results point towards the validity of the sociological perspective: those families in which the husbands have medium labor status present more egalitarian patterns of household labor distribution. Additionally, the results confirm the importance of attitudinal variables such as religiosity to explain domestic labor division patterns: women with more traditional values experience a more severe double burden.¿Experimentan las mujeres una doble carga laboral? ¿Son las mujeres responsables de las tareas domésticas en los hogares? ¿Qué explica la variación en patrones de distribución de trabajo doméstico que tiene lugar a través de las familias? En este artículo se abordan estas cuestiones partiendo de dos marcos teóricos opuestos: el marco de la New Home Economics, y el del Capital Social, que se ponen a prueba a partir de datos de la Encuesta de Fecundidad y Familia de 1995. Los resultados apuntan hacia la validez de la perspectiva sociológica: las familias donde el marido tiene un estatus laboral medio presentan patrones más equitativos de distribución del trabajo doméstico. Adicionalmente, los resultados confirman la importancia de variables actitudinales como la religiosidad para explicar patrones de división del trabajo doméstico: las mujeres más tradicionales son las que experimentan una mayor doble carga

Get PDFWhile some of the recent literature addressing the sociology of work and organizations recognizes the role of workers’ agency, it always includes the concept of workers’ subjectivity as a contradictory and inconsistent “effect” of power relations. In contrast to this approach, using the analysis of eighteen interviews conducted with workers of an automotive multinational in Barcelona, it will be shown in this article the innovative, autonomous, logical and coherent character of the set of meanings guiding workers’ everyday actions. In this case study, the everyday actions of the workers are guided by a belief in the necessity of an ethical code of behavior. This code is composed of a set of congruent moral principles. The actions of resistance and commitment, presented by several authors as contradictory, appear being consistent with a set of ethical principles, and therefore, as value-rational actions.En parte de la literatura reciente sobre sociología del trabajo y de las organizaciones, el reconocimiento del papel de los obreros como agentes ha venido de la mano de una concepción de la subjetividad de los trabajadores como un “efecto” contradictorio e inconsistente de las relaciones de poder. Frente a esta concepción, y a partir del análisis de dieciocho entrevistas realizadas a trabajadores de una multinacional automovilística de Barcelona, se pondrá de manifiesto en este artículo el carácter innovador, autónomo, lógico y coherente del conjunto de los significados que guían las acciones cotidianas de los trabajadores. En el caso analizado, los trabajadores guían sus acciones cotidianas bajo la idea de la necesidad de respetar un código ético de comportamiento compuesto por una serie de principios morales bien trabados. Las acciones de compromiso y resistencia, que algunos autores presentan como contradictorias, aparecen aquí como acciones coherentes con una serie de principios éticos, y por tanto, como racionalmente ajustadas a valores
La integración de los inmigrantes de “segunda generación” en Almería. Un caso de pluralismo fragmentado
Get PDFThe objective of this article is to know the integration process of “second-generation” inmigrant integration in the countryside of Almería (Spain). We analyze the adaptation that the youths are experiencing in the following dimensions: socioeconomic, mixed relationships, relating cultural, norms and transnationalism. The data are obtained with the administration of a questionnaire in different educational centres and in the residential environment; the final sample is formed by a total of 390 surveys. The results show that not all the second- generation immigrants have the same adaptation; we can observe, on the contrary, unequal situations, what draws a scenario of fragmented pluralism. The origin, the years of stay, the level of studies, the profession and the habitat are the key variables that predict this process.El objetivo de este artículo es conocer el proceso de integración de los inmigrantes de “segunda generación” en la provincia de Almería (España). Para ello vamos a analizar la adaptación que están experimentando los jóvenes en las siguientes dimensiones: socioeconómica, relaciones mixtas, referentes culturales, normas y transnacionalidad. Los datos se obtienen a partir de la administración de un cuestionario en diferentes centros educativos y en el ámbito residencial; la muestra final está formada por un total de 390 encuestas. Los resultados muestran que no todos los inmigrantes de segunda generación tienen la misma adaptación; se plantean, por el contrario, situaciones dispares, lo que dibuja un escenario de pluralismo fragmentado. El origen, los años de estancia, el nivel de estudios, la profesión y el hábitat son las variables que predicen fundamentalmente este proceso
La neorruralidad y sus significados. El caso de Navarra
Get PDFThis paper examines some of the meanings that are sometimes neglected under the generic term of neorurality. From our point of view, moving one’s home from town to countryside is not solely a change of house, but a life venture, bringing together social representations of the rural and the urban, of country life and the urban lifestyle. In the case of people who have moved from Pamplona (county town of Navarre, a northern region of Spain) to any rural area of Navarre, these representations, along with the broad heterogeneity of underlying reasons and expectations for the future, have shaped three different types of neo-rurality. They represent, somehow, three ways of constructing differing rural spaces (and ruralities). The paper analyses these types of neo-ruralities and the significance of the move for the migrants in the context of Navarre. To do this, we analyse the discourse expressed in diverse indepth interviews conducted with people who have identified themselves as urban-to-rural migrants.El presente artículo tiene como objetivo indagar en los significados que se esconden tras el concepto paraguas de neorruralidad. El cambio residencial de la ciudad al campo es concebido aquí no sólo como un cambio de vivienda, sino como una apuesta vital en la que confluyen una serie de representaciones sociales sobre lo rural y lo urbano, sobre la vida en el pueblo y la vida en la ciudad. En el caso de quienes abandonaron Pamplona e instalaron su hogar en un pueblo de Navarra, estas representaciones y la heterogeneidad de expectativas de futuro subyacentes conforman tres tipos de neorruralidad diferentes que representan, a su vez, distintos modos de construir espacios rurales (y ruralidades) diferenciados, más o menos divergentes. A través del discurso expresado en una serie de entrevistas en profundidad, realizadas a personas que se autoidentificaban como migrantes urbano-rurales, exploramos estos tres tipos de neorruralidad y el sentido que esta apuesta residencial tuvo para sus protagonistas
Voto estructural, racional y mediatizado en las elecciones generales españolas de 1996, 2000 y 2004
Get PDFThe article presents three voting models that attempt to explain what is specific about each of the last three general elections held in Spain. Thus, a structural model is proposed for the 1996 elections, a rational-economic model for the elections in 2000, and a mediatized model to explain the mechanisms that intervened in the 2004 elections. The article then presents a voting model that attempts to integrate the main conclusions drawn from each of the previous models. Special emphasis is placed on the communicational mechanisms of the last elections (2004), underlining the influence of the media in attributing responsibility, the issue according to which voters evaluate public policy. Simultaneously, attention is called to the active role of the audiences in selecting the messages that are coherent with their personal experience and their cultural pattern.El artículo presenta tres modelos de voto que pretenden explicar aquello que cada una de las tres últimas elecciones generales celebradas en España tiene de específico. Así, se propone un modelo estructural para las elecciones de 1996, un modelo racional-económico para las elecciones de 2000 y un modelo mediatizado para explicar los mecanismos que intervinieron en las elecciones de 2004. El artículo presenta por último un modelo de voto que pretende integrar las principales conclusiones extraídas de cada uno de los modelos anteriores. Se hace especial énfasis en los mecanismos comunicativos de las últimas elecciones (2004), subrayando la influencia de los medios sobre la atribución de responsabilidad en virtud de la cual los votantes evalúan las políticas públicas, al tiempo que se llama la atención sobre el papel activo de las audiencias a la hora de seleccionar aquellos mensajes que son coherentes con su experiencia personal y con su patrón cultural
La fragua de un oficio. Consideraciones en torno a Sociologie de l´Algerie de Pierre Bourdieu
Get PDFThis paper analyses the contents of the first work by the French anthropologist and sociologist Pierre Bourdieu: Sociologie de l´Algérie. In this respect, these contents will be studied considering the relationships the author had with other intellectuals from 1955 to 1958, period of time in which he wrote this book. Our thesis on this article is based on the fact that this work will only be properly understood if we take into account the relations between the intellectuals living in Algeria at the beginning of its Independence War. We will only be able to understand the author´s political and theoretical choices if we analyse the possible influences that he could have had at that time. At the end of the present paper, we will raise a number of objections to Bourdieu´s work in the light of other publications of the same period.Este artículo analiza los contenidos de la primera obra del antropólogo y sociólogo francés Pierre Bourdieu: Sociologie de l’Algérie. No obstante, se estudiarán contemplando también las relaciones del autor con otros intelectuales durante los años que van de 1955 a 1958, años en los que escribió este libro. Mantengo que sólo podemos comprender esta obra si nos ayudamos de una sociología que examine la relación entre intelectuales radicados en Argelia al comienzo de la Guerra de Independencia. Únicamente si analizamos las probables influencias del joven Bourdieu podremos entender sus elecciones y rechazos teóricos y políticos. Al final del texto, se pondrá una serie de objeciones al autor confrontando su investigación con otras publicadas en la misma época
