The art of bringing stories to life: An exploration of live action adaptations and the role of arts managers and producers
Get PDFThe purpose of this thesis is to explore and expand upon the process of creating live action adaptations of fictional characters from other mediums. This thesis focuses on the pivotal role played by arts managers, better known in the film and TV industry as producers, in bringing these adaptations to life. The contents of this paper provide a comprehensive analysis of the adaptation process, from concept development to production release, emphasizing the multifaceted responsibilities and challenges faced by arts managers and producers. Through a combination of case studies discussing creative vision, character development, and costume design, alongside concept analyses, this paper will showcase the artistry involved in adapting literary fictional characters to the screen and the essential contributions of arts managers and producers in this creative endeavor. The examination of these case studies and concepts aims to elucidate the intricate decision-making processes and collaborative efforts that shape the final cinematic representation of beloved characters

Get PDFBeimeng Fu is an award-winning video journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Shanghai, China. She has covered stories out of the Greater China Area, the U.S. and its Asian diasporas, and East Africa. Her bylines have appeared in The Washington Post, BuzzFeed News, The California Sunday Magazine, ABC News, Quartz, South China Morning Post, Sixth Tone, Tencent Guyu Project, and more. During COVID, she recorded the collective mood of people who experienced the two-month-long lockdown in Shanghai in the Spring of 2022. The documentary, “Thank You For Your Cooperation,” was named a finalist in the 2023 Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA).
In this interview, Fu recalled the ground situation in China where COVID was discovered first. She covered the pandemic news and its impact on migrant workers, residents in Wuhan, education, and rural parts and frontier cities of China. She endured a two-month total lockdown in her apartment in Shanghai while producing two video projects about these lockdowns from home. In this interview, she commented on the challenges of being a woman journalist in Italy, the gender disparity in newsrooms and leadership, the contributions of women journalists, and concerns about job security and safety as a freelance journalist.
