Native advertising on news websites: The impacts of media organizational factors on disclosure clarity

    No full text
Building on the field theory, this study examined how disclosure of native advertising at popular U.S. news websites may relate to their organizations’ positions in the journalistic field. The study found divergent disclosure practices across websites, between language and visual disclosures, and between native ad links on the homepage and native ad posts on story pages within a website. Overall, older organizations with more Pulitzer awards and younger organizations with relatively more Pulitzer awards and social media followers seemed to execute clearer disclosure. Moreover, the organizations with more Pulitzer awards seemed to impose a clearer disclosure language on native ad links at gateway locations than those with fewer awards but lessened disclosure of native ad posts on the landing pages. The older news websites with more social media followers adopted an obscurer disclosure language of native ad links but distinguished native ad posts more once audiences landed on the content page. This study recommends media effect scholars take a holistic approach to assess ad recognition and suggest publishers build on cultural capital as an ultimate defense against heteronomous forces

Family support of older caregivers: Factors influencing change in quality of life

    No full text
Understanding factors that can improve the quality of life (QOL) of older caregivers of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is important in broadening participation in family empowerment interventions. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing the QOL of older caregivers (50+) of adults with IDD who participated in a peer-mediated state-wide family support project. The research study used a quasi-experimental research design grounded in the family quality of life (FQOL) framework, with pretest and posttest data gathered from 82 caregivers. Correlation and regression analyses were conducted to identify factors influencing changes in the QOL of study participants. Findings indicated that improvements in caregiver QOL after participating in the project could be explained by caregiver’s employment status, increased global FQOL, and decreased caregiver stress and depression

Does board gender diversity affect firms\u27 expected risk?

    No full text
Purpose This study aims to explore the impact of board gender diversity on firms\u27 forward-looking risk, as perceived by both the firm\u27s management and its investors. The authors seek to understand whether the presence of female directors and the consequent enhancement of board dynamics can influence a firm\u27s risk profile.Design/methodology/approach The authors use firms\u27 cash holdings and option implied volatility as proxies for future risk. The approach involves a rigorous analysis that accounts for potential concerns related to selection bias, endogeneity, heteroskedasticity and serial correlation. The authors further substantiate the findings through robustness checks, including a dynamic panel system general method of moment test and a Heckman correction model.Findings The results reveal an inverse relationship between board gender diversity and firms\u27 expected risk. The findings suggest that the primary driver of this risk reduction is the improvement in the group dynamics of the board that comes with increased gender diversity. This implies that gender diverse boards can significantly influence a firm\u27s risk management and financial performance.Research limitations/implications The results indicate that gender diverse firms have economically and statistically significantly less expected risk and have better financial performance than firms with less board gender diversity. This has important implications for the organization of corporate boards.Practical implications If the addition of female directors alters the risk aversion of the board, then management may be compelled to alter their investment and production decisions that, ultimately, affects firms\u27 profitability. In addition, the authors investigate whether changes to firm risk is due to gender differences in risk preferences or to an improvement in the group dynamics of the board.Social implications The empirical results suggest that the effect of board gender diversity on firms\u27 expected risk and financial performance may be due to an improvement in the collective intelligence of the board, as a result of more gender diversity, and not due to gender differences in risk preferences.Originality/value To the best of the authors\u27 knowledge, this work is the first to study the effect of board gender diversity on firms\u27 future risk

Indigenous autonomies in Latin America in the face of contemporary capitalism: Overview, perspectives and dilemmas, part 1

    No full text
The contemporary phase of capitalism has led to an intensification of the process of “accumulation by dispossession,” which entails a growing conflict between territorial displacement and indigenous resistances. These conflicts manifest in projects for autonomy that take on diverse forms. Here, we address the origins of these various concepts of autonomy while focusing on their corresponding dilemmas and strategic choices across different historical contexts. Finally, we look at the examples of Zapatista autonomy in Mexico, the experiences of the Purépecha community of Cherán, and the Mapuche struggle in Wallmapu/Chile, three distinct models where organizational processes themselves forge new collective subjectivities meant to confront neoliberal capitalist dispossession.

    No full text
Purpose This paper explores how the blockchain food traceability system (BFTS) affects consumers\u27 affective brand commitment and subsequent willingness to pay premium prices.Design/methodology/approach From February 11 to May 23, 2023, this study collected data from 236 Chinese customers, who had purchased blockchain-traced food in Jingdong Mall within the past three months. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the data.Findings The main findings were as follows: (1) BFTS information transparency, information immutability and product diagnosticity are significant predictors of consumer-perceived trustworthiness; BFTS information transparency, product diagnosticity and product safety are significant predictors of consumer-perceived informativeness, (2) Perceived trustworthiness and perceived informativeness build consumers\u27 affective brand commitment, (3) Affective brand commitment affects willingness to pay premiums and (4) Health consciousness positively moderates the relationship between consumers\u27 affective brand commitment and willingness to pay premiums.Originality/value This paper complements the research on consumer behaviour in the BFTS, and the research results provide important enlightenment for guiding food enterprises to formulate reasonable and perfect marketing strategies of blockchain-traced food

Migrant Vulnerability to Human Trafficking: A Decade in Review

    Get PDF
Despite the establishment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in 2000, the state and prevalence of human trafficking in the United States has greatly increased. While information and legislation exist, it still remains an under-researched and under-evaluated issue. This study looks through the enacted human trafficking federal legislation over the last decade to track whether migrant vulnerability to human trafficking has been further addressed with the evolution of the issue within the country. To provide a relevant analysis, this study will examine human trafficking legislation through the years of 2013-2023 and will focus on the main research question of whether or not migrant vulnerability to human trafficking has been explicitly addressed in federal legislation and, if so, how. It is predicted that due to the issue’s massive increase in awareness throughout law enforcement, policy making, and society as a whole, a majority of human trafficking-focused enacted legislation will explicitly recognize and address migrant victims’ protections against human trafficking within the United States
