Grace states that she doesn’t know what to tell Louise, and suggests she talk to Esther Broner at Wayne State, who is a poet and a scholar and may be interested. Grace enclosed a ten dollar check in the letter, saying she wants a copy of Louise’s book. She also suggests contacting Jane Cooper, but guesses that Louise has already written to her

Communication and Cultural Strategies Impacting Ukrainian Refugees and Others Involved
The Russian armed forces moved into Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Immediately and in the months following, millions of Ukrainians left their homes to seek a safe haven elsewhere. The dimensions of the Ukrainian refugee crisis are, in the words of Germany’s representative to the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) Katherina Lumpp, “unprecedented… the refugee movement we are now seeing in Ukraine is unique. It is currently the second largest refugee[1] situation in the world. No situation has developed this rapidly since the Second World War” (Bauer, 2022). As of October 2023, the UN Refugee Agency has officially recorded 6,204,600 Ukrainian refugees (Ukraine Refugee Portal, UN Refugee Agency). In short, the Ukrainian refugee situation presents a dramatic need to accommodate millions of Ukrainians into host or transit countries. Among the many concerns are the cross-cultural differences Ukrainians face as they flee abroad to countries with which they are unfamiliar and whose people may be unacquainted with Ukrainian culture. To that end, the purpose of the current study is to focus on the cross-cultural communication challenges confronted by Ukrainian refugees and those in destination and transit countries interacting with them, such as hosts, paid and volunteer agency staff, school and learning personnel, potential and current employers, and co-workers. The key points covered by this research are cultural complexities; language and language dynamics; managing change; and, loss and grief.

Supervising with intercultural competence: A phenomenological study of mid-level higher education and student affairs professionals
Many mid-level higher education and student affairs professionals are responsible for the supervision of entry-level professionals. As the population of entry-level professionals continues to diversify, it is necessary for mid-level student affairs supervisors to engage effectively across differences of culture and identity in their supervisory relationships. This qualitative study explored the phenomenon of supervising with intercultural competence. Mid-level student affairs supervisors who had intercultural mindsets and supervised across salient identity or cultural differences were interviewed in a semi-structured format, and the data was analyzed using the interpretative phenomenological analysis method. The findings introduce a model for supervising with intercultural competence. Supervising with intercultural competence is a complex and layered phenomenon that consists of core mindsets, an open and learning disposition, recognition of cultural differences within supervisory functions (i.e., expectations, communication, and accountability), and coaching in the navigation of the broader organizational culture. The findings from this study add new dimensions to both student affairs supervision and intercultural competence scholarship and can assist the supervisory practice of mid-level student affairs professionals
Happy, and they know it? The roles of positive affectivity, intrinsic motivation and network building on LinkedIn on employment predictions
PurposeDrawing on trait activation theory, this study examines the influence of positive affectivity on employment predictions (e.g. the probability of obtaining an interview and being hired) via intrinsic motivation and network building on LinkedIn.
Design/methodology/approachMultisource field data were collected from student job seekers (n = 179) searching for an internship over two points with a six-month time separation between the first and second data collection.
FindingsStructural equation modeling (SEM) analyses revealed marginal support for the mediating roles of intrinsic motivation and network building in positive affectivity’s indirect effect on employment predictions about the probability of obtaining an interview and being hired.
Research limitations/implicationsThis study extends research on job search networking/selection by demonstrating the sequential process through which job seekers’ positive affectivity influences employment predictions, emphasizing the intermediary roles of intrinsic motivation and network building on LinkedIn.
Practical implications
Job seekers, recruiters and career counselors should consider network building on LinkedIn as a relevant expression of positive affectivity.
Originality/valueWe apply trait activation theory as an overarching framework to examine how an affective between-person difference is expressed via intrinsic motivation and network building and is, at the same time, perceived and valued by employers on LinkedIn
Solar flare effects in the Martian ionosphere and magnetosphere: 3-D time-dependent MHD-MGITM simulation and comparison with MAVEN and MGS
A comprehensive modeling study has been conducted to investigate space weather effects at Mars during the 10 September 2017 solar flare, utilizing an integrated framework that combines the global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and Mars Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model (MGITM). This is the first time the thermosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere system is self-consistently simulated under realistic, time-varying conditions. Our simulations align well with observations from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN). Recognizing that complexities due to highly disturbed upstream conditions and rotating crustal fields obscure solar flare effects in orbit-to-orbit comparisons, we perform controlled simulations of nonflare and flare cases and exploit their contrast to quantify spatiotemporal variations in flare impact. Our results highlight pronounced and rapid dayside ionospheric perturbations, contrasting with weaker and delayed nightside responses. Notably, in the topside ionosphere, and C densities increase primarily on the dayside below 300 km altitude, peaking with an increase of 20%–30%. The density shows a more significant increase of up to 50%, extending into the magnetosphere and nightside via plasma transport, increasing its total loss rate by 14%. We observe distinct altitude-dependent patterns in dayside electron density enhancements in percent, characterized by a weakening with altitude and a rapid decay below 150 km in line with the flare development, and a gradual intensification between 150–300 km due to plasma transport and flare-induced atmospheric upwelling. Earlier Mars Global Surveyor observations were limited to the low-altitude pattern due to atmospheric expansion and missed the higher altitude variations observed by MAVEN
Reinterpretation of Voronocladus from the Silurian of Ukraine as a bryopsidalean alga (Chlorophyta): The outlines of a major early Paleozoic macroalgal radiation begin to come into focus
Voronocladus dryganti Skompski et al. was recently erected as a new genus and species of dasycladalean alga on the basis of material from the Ludlovian Konivka Formation of western Ukraine. The thalli of this noncalcified macroalga are remarkable not only for their exceptional preservation, but also for showing unusual structures at the top, which were interpreted as epibionts. Here, an alternative interpretation is proposed for this material. In it, the affinity of Voronocladus as a siphonous green macroalga is retained, but as a bryopsidalean rather than dasycladalean alga, and the graptolite-like structures at the top are considered to represent the uppermost siphons of mature thalli instead of epibionts. Detailed morphological comparisons with living bryopsidalean taxa, as well as taphonomic and evolutionary considerations and key basal divergence dates indicated by molecular clock studies, provide support for the new interpretation. Viewed in broader terms, the reinterpreted morphology of Voronocladus is important because it (1) provides novel insights regarding the phylogenetic affinity of Ordovician and Silurian macroalgae with a form broadly similar to Voronocladus, and (2) helps to resolve the outlines of a major radiation of bryopsidalean algae that began during the Ordovician and continued into the Silurian. This event, which is only now beginning to come into focus, includes the initial evolution of Caulerpa- and Codium-like thalli and coincides with a major radiation of dasycladalean algae
The Venus Global Ionosphere-Thermosphere Model (V-GITM): A coupled thermosphere and ionosphere formulation
This paper introduces the new Venus global ionosphere-thermosphere model (V-GITM) which incorporates the terrestrial GITM framework with Venus-specific parameters, ion-neutral chemistry, and radiative processes in order to simulate some of the observable features regarding the temperatures, composition, and dynamical structure of the Venus atmosphere from 70 to 170 km. Atmospheric processes are included based upon formulations used in previous Venus GCMs, several augmentations exist, such as improved horizontal and vertical momentum equations and tracking exothermic chemistry. Explicitly solving the momentum equations allows for the exploration of its dynamical effects on the day-night structure. In addition, V-GITM\u27s use of exothermic chemistry instead of a strong heating efficiency accounts for the heating due to the solar EUV while producing comparable temperatures to empirical models. V-GITM neutral temperatures and neutral-ion densities are compared to upper atmosphere measurements obtained from Pioneer Venus and Venus Express. V-GITM demonstrates asymmetric horizontal wind velocities through the cloud tops to the middle thermosphere and explains the mechanisms for sustaining the wind structure. In addition, V-GITM produces reasonable dayside ion densities and shows that the neutral winds can carry the ions to the nightside via an experiment advecting O+2
The ad agency and ad content in the 1840s
Volney B. Palmer, the father of the American advertising agency, introduced the idea of systematic advertising in the 1840s, beginning a new chapter of the newspaper advertising business. This study compared advertising content and form in two newspapers in the 1840s, one with Palmer as an ad agent and one without, to explore the impact of advertising agencies on newspaper advertising in ad agencies’ early days. This study content analyzed 827 advertisements from twelve issues of two newspapers in 1840, 1845, and 1849 and documented the differences in advertising amount, product categories, advertiser types, locations, and designs over time and between the two newspapers. While the results show significant changes in advertising amount and advertiser types, limited evidence was found to support the ad agency’s impact on growing advertisement size, expanding outreach to regional and national markets, and adopting more illustrations in design. The findings call into question generalizations made in the advertising history literature
