What amino acid residue is responsible for the interaction of Atg11 with its autophagy partner Atg9?

Macroautophagy is a cellular function that involves the formation of a double membrane vesicle that isolates and transports cellular materials to the vacuole or lysosome for degradation and recycling. It is divided into selective and non-selective macroautophagy. Atg11 and Atg9 are two key proteins involved in selective macroautophagy, and their interaction is critical for selective macroautophagy. Specific residues on Atg9 critical for Atg11 binding have been identified, but similar residues on Atg11 have not been identified. The aim of my research was to identify a specific residue critical for Atg11’s interaction with Atg9. To this end, we carried out Yeast-twohybrid and Co-IP experiments on 6 different mutants of Atg11. Only one mutant lost interaction with Atg9, but it was a multiple mutant and likely not a single binding surface. Thus, we could not identify a specific residue critical for Atg11’s interaction with Atg9. Still, we successfully eliminated several possibilities, refining our understanding of this area

Examining youth experiences aging out of foster care

This systematic literature review explores the challenges faced by youth aging out of the foster care system with a focus on the role of Independent Living Programs (ILP). Nationally, around 18,538 children are aging out of the foster care system. Issues that children aging out face include lack of transitional housing, limited access to education, inadequate healthcare, and an increased risk of involvement in the justice system. Challenges related to these issues can lead to instability in housing, employment, and health, further contributing to the risk of justice system involvement. This population does not appear in more recent literature; however, it does not diminish the need for research and advocacy. The aim of this literature review is to gain a deeper understanding of these issues and assess the effectiveness of ILPs

Colorblind racial attitudes mediates the association between the internalization of model minority myth attitudes and tolerance

The model minority myth is the belief that Asian Americans are generally more intelligent and more hardworking than other minority groups. Many studies have demonstrated the relationship between belief in the model minority myth and anti-Black sentiment in White Americans. However, there is little literature on the relationship between belief in the model minority myth and anti-Black sentiment in Asian Americans. With this in mind, we plan to determine whether the internalization of the model minority myth in Asian Americans has a relationship with anti- Black sentiment. This relationship is being measured by the IM-4 Scale (which measures the internalization of the model minority myth in Asian Americans) and the Tolerance For Racism Scale (which measures the degree to which participants are willing to tolerate the racist beliefs and attitudes of those around them). Furthermore, we believe that this relationship will be mediated by color-blind racial attitudes (CoBRAS), or the belief that race does not play a role in one’s ability to succeed in the United States

From dictatorship to sectarianism: Iraq\u27s domestic politics and minority rights (1979-2023)

This study looks at how Iraq’s domestic politics have changed, moving from Saddam Hussein’s authoritarian rule to the post-2003 era that’s been heavily shaped by sectarian divisions. It focuses on how Shi’a communities were systematically oppressed under Saddam’s Sunni-led Ba’athist regime and then compares that to the frustrations many Sunnis have faced under the mostly Shi’a-led government that came after the U.S. invasion. By looking at government policies, shifts in society, and the current status of minority rights, I explore how sectarianism has shaped governance, complicated the Kurdish issue, and affected things like inter-sect marriages between Shi’a and Sunni Muslims. Through interviews with Shi’a individuals, I was able to get a more personal view of what these political changes have meant for people on the ground. My main argument is that while Iraq’s move toward democracy was supposed to bring fairness and inclusion, it’s actually made sectarian tensions more visible and deepened the divide in new ways. This paper adds to the conversation by centering real lived experiences and showing how identity and power are still at the heart of Iraq’s ongoing political struggles

The relationships between parent/guardian and teacher inclusion in school decision-making processes, perceptions of school quality, and retention in schools

This study offers an explanation of the relationship between the inclusion of parents/guardians and teachers in Michigan K-12 public school decision-making processes, perceptions of school quality, and subsequent parent/guardian and teacher retention by the school. Decision-making structures and participation in those structures, participants’ own childhood experiences, trust, agency, relatedness (belonging), and usefulness were considered in constructing a model of best fit to explain the relationships between decision-making inclusion, perceptions of quality, and retention. What emerged from this 225-participant (121 parents/guardians and 104 teacher) survey was a model that affirms that professional learning communities (PLCs) are a structure that supports greater inclusion—depth and frequency—in school decision-making processes, greater inclusion in decision-making positively influences overall decision-making satisfaction, and inclusion in decision-making processes generates trust. The model supports that trust is the pathway through which inclusion in decision-making positively impacts perceptions of school quality, which are strongly connected to the likelihood of parent/guardian and teacher retention by the school. This pathway, which identifies inclusion in school decision-making processes as a precursor to positive perceptions of school quality and retention, may help schools attenuate high mobility rates. Given the devastating impact of both teacher and family mobility on a child’s educational achievement and social well-being, this study has important implications for future research, theory, and practice

Through a Medium of Fordism : Images and Ideas on Utopia

The concept of utopia, which has long captivated human imagination, offering a vision of an ideal society that can be inspiring, is elusive at best and harmful in many of the actual attempts we’ve seen throughout history. This photo essay takes me through the philosophical underpinnings of Fordism’s Utopian ideas, the cultural intersections between the United States and Australia, and the enduring fascination with antiquity that shapes our modern identities (Gray, 2018). I aim to learn more about the contradictions and patterns that define our collective and individual pursuits of an ideal world. Keywords: utopia, contradictions, liberation, photograph
